“Supergirl” Ratings Soar Thanks to “Elseworlds” Crossover

Supergirl

Across Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of this week, The CW’s “Elseworlds” crossover event enjoyed terrific ratings, with “Supergirl” enjoying season high numbers.

A total of 2.13 million viewers watched Tuesday night’s “Supergirl” episode, which concluded the 3-night event with a Nielsen rating of .7 (the best of any of the DC Comics TV shows this week). This was also the highest rating “Supergirl” episode of the current season (the Season 4 premiere was the previous highest rating episode, watched by 1.52 million viewers with a rating of .5).

This episode of “Supergirl” actually rated higher than any episode of “The Flash” this season, with that show usually sitting in the Tuesday 8.00pm time slot occupied by “Supergirl” this week.

So the ratings were high. Gee I wonder why? Could it be because of a certain Superhero who goes by the name of Superman? See CW? We want to see more of Tyler’s Superman. The ratings were evidence of that. Please make a series happen.

And thank you Supermanhomepage for answering my question on how the crossover did with the ratings. I appreciate the hard work that all of you do.

While I would LOVE to agree with you, Spidey, I think the ratings were up because we had the fans of all the Arrowverse shows on board for the finale and not because of Tyler. Would be nice to see a spinoff happen, though. But if it does, the powers that be need to amp up the characters of both the Man AND the Girl of Steel. I’m a little tired of Supergirl and now Superman getting KOed by anyone with muscles. It’s one thing to see ’em get hit and they end up on the next block, but they… Read more »

Well… yeah… I was born in 1952. He was the Superman I grew up with. And even now when I watch an episode or two from the DVDs, he was truer to the comics version of that era than TV is today. Make no mistake, I enjoy all the incarnations of Superman on TV and movies, (and yes, that includes Brandon Routh – who is a real hoot on Legends), but Kirk Alyn notwithstanding, the team on the 50’s TV show went for staying true to the comics, and George’s portrayal was (ahem) super.

We all have our reasons for tuning into this crossover I guess. Man it was an awesome crossover. My favorite one so far. I hope that next year’s crossover that they will top this one. Although I do think it will be hard for them to do that.

I think we’re both right Steve Eden. There is a fan base for all three shows, and a crossover brings those fans together which is part of the reason for the high ratings. I do believe that the fans of the Tyler Hoechlin Superman were also a reason for the high ratings as well.

At the end of the show they teased “Crisis on Infinite Earths” as the next crossover. Kinda brave, considering the season isn’t even half over, and in TV, there’s no telling whether the shows will be picked up for another year.

I think that the crossover ratings will help with these shows renewals.

The way CW had displayed there isn’t a need for Superman, to include him saying so, because Supergirl is so much better, I don’t see them doing it.
It’s obvious now that his role in the CW universe is to shine up Supergirl. It would be a challenge to do a Superman show now, IMO, since he kinda seems unnecessary and diminished in the world the have created.

I’m not so sure that CW hates Superman but I also don’t think they really have any understanding of how this stuff is coming off sometimes. Because if they hated him I don’t see why they would work so hard to make him so likable. ..and that’s really the frustrating thing. I think you have the compulsion that too many modern writers have to over-compensate for other characters because of Superman’s power levels on top of them wanting to over-sell us on Karas capability. Thing is though, I don’t think anyone who isn’t just really invested in looking down on… Read more »

Since there is the multiverse, and they’re doing the crisis story, maybe they will introduce a Superman from another universe. Maybe Tyler will return, but as a different Superman. Sort of like how there is more than one version of Wells in the flash series. I do think Tyler will be back, but it’s going to take some time. Maybe the crisis story will bring in Dean Cain’s Superman and Brandon Routh’s Superman. And they both have appeared on the CW shows before. Routh even more so since he’s on legends of tomorrow. They brought back Shipp’s Flash this year.… Read more »

I think he’s being hyperbolic to get his point across.
A little too hyperbolic, but I agree with his sentiment despite him going way over the top with it.
IMO, he’s a Superman fan and really upset with the writers.

Agreed. That’s all I ask from that show. Please please stop making Superman look weak. I mean most of the people who watch this show are Superman fans and watch it b/c she is in the Superman universe so their show will hurt in the long run if they don’t quit putting down the greatest hero in the world and the grand daddy of all heroes which is Superman of course. I mean if they would quit that it would be a fantastic show. I don’t understand why this show feels the need to put Superman and Supergirl in a… Read more »

I don’t watch Campea. He didn’t even say anything about part one of this crossover, which Tyler was amazing in. Superman was great in that episode. And John didn’t say a word about it. He just wanted to say anything negative about it. And he probably waited to see if there was anything to complain about before he did.Plus I fInd that John’s behavior can be uncalled for and insultingly inappropriate at times. I don’t rely on his videos for any important Superman info.

Well, he’s where I agree with him. When it’s just standing around with dialog and interplay, he’s fine, that’s not the issue. It’s what the writers decide to do with him as Superman. He’s more like Superboy in levels of worth. If you remember the H-El on Earth run in New 52, his role in CW was equal to Superboy’s in that comic run. He fails to make a real impact in a fight, not using his head, just relying on strength and getting owned by all the enemies. But Supergirl was the exact opposite. Stronger, faster, smarter and an… Read more »

I understand what you’re saying. I also made a review on the episode on another comment section. I just don’t like watching John Campea’s videos because he can act juvenile at times. With vulgar language and giving the finger or fingers on multiple occasions, there are better ways to express oneself than to be rude and insulting. I get it. He hates what they did. So do I. But I’m not going to start giving the figure or cursing swears at my tv because I didn’t like what I saw. Yes I will say that I didn’t like what they… Read more »

Clark_Jo, please don’t think that my previous post was in anyway shape or form supposed to be a debate. I wasn’t trying to debate, and it’s not meant to be one. I was explaining why I don’t like to watch John’s shows. I also like to emphasize that I did notice the mistakes that CW made with Superman, and that I’m not turning a blind eye about it. What they did was wrong. There was no excuse for it. I just hope that when they bring back Superman, and I do believe that they will, that they will treat Superman… Read more »

I agree. People can make their point without cursing like a sailer and being vulgar. I mean Steve, Scotty and Bailey make their points without shooting birds and share their points of views without being vulgar and cursing. All the curse words, bird shooting and vulgarness are not necessary for getting a point across for sure.

I don’t always agree with John either. I don’t think CW hates superman. If the CW really “Hated” Superman they wouldn’t have made a Smallville series or even a Supergirl series considering she is in the Superman universe. I just think the Supergirl show mishandles Superman at times. I loved the very first episode Superman first appeared in. I really enjoyed when Superman flew to the DEO and everyone stopped and turned around to admire him. I felt that was a really good recognize that the greatest hero in the world is visiting the DEO moment. However I just didn’t… Read more »

I agree. I’m not giving up on this version of Superman either. This version of Superman has fans so there’s still hope for him. Episodes one and two of Supergirl season two and part one of this crossover have shown a Superman that I enjoyed watching. The problems that they have lie in the season two finale of Supergirl and part three of this crossover. If they just stick with the formula that they used in episodes 1&2 of season 2 of Supergirl and part 1 of this crossover, then they would have a recipe for Superman to be fully… Read more »

BTW, there was a nod to the crossover on Legends. The team asked Gideon if there were any messages for them. Gideon replied they had missed messages from Barry Allen, Oliver Queen, and Kara Zor-El. Ray said, “Sounds like the annual crossover.”

I don’t understand why the Supergirl show puts Supergirl and Superman in a competition. I mean why does it have to be a competition between them? They are from the same planet. They have the exact same powers. Supergirl would be a great show without that. There is nothing wrong with wanting Supergirl to shine. Its her show I get that. They don’t have to do that. Supergirl and Superman both have earned the name hero. She is a beautiful, strong, independent woman with good family morals and always tries to do the right thing like Superman. I mean I… Read more »

You’ve said a lot of good points. Frankly I don’t know what’s worse. What Superman said at the end of this crossover, or the reaction from his fans. I myself being one of them. Fans should celebrate Superman on tv, but when they do something like this to the world’s greatest superhero, it just makes us fans really upset. It’s just a crying shame.

This is how I would fix this. Since Superman and Lois will be traveling to Argo, the villain Mongul would show up and somehow Lois would be taken. Superman desperate to save the love of his life, travels to warworld to confront Mongul. Mongul would then say something like “ I challenge you Superman! You who are the universe’s greatest champion!” It would be a long fight scene, but in the end Mongul would lie defeated and asks Superman” No! I’m the greatest warrior in the universe! No one has ever beaten me before! How could you have beaten me? I’m… Read more »
