Richard Donner Turned Down Paul Williams’ Song Idea for “Superman: The Movie”

Academy Award-winning, Grammy Award-winning music legend Paul Williams reveals that Richard Donner turned down his idea for a song for “Superman: The Movie”.

During the Comic Book Central video interview, Joe Stuber asks Paul Williams about an old article he had read that said that Williams was writing songs for the film. Williams reveals that Donner did approach him to write lyrics for the love theme and wanted “Can You Read My Mind?”, but Paul had a different approach. He actually sings his original lyrics during the interview…

Just inside my soul there’s a love and a light that I never knew.
Just inside my soul there’s a world that I saved for you.
Like tonight, it is lusty and love swept.
Not a dream but a promise that time kept.
To a love beyond time, that will never end, never end.
It will come again, come again, when you hear me calling.

Richard Donner decided instead to go in a different direction, hiring Leslie Bricusse to write “Can You Read My Mind?”.
