January 29, 2000: Superman Animated Finales

Paul Dini, producer of the Superman animated series, has announced that the last two new episodes of the Superman animated series will air on Kids' WB! on Saturday, Feb. 5 and Saturday, Feb. 12.

The episodes are called "Legacy, Part One" and "Legacy, Part Two." "These two episodes conclude both the series and the ongoing Superman vs. Darkseid story arc," Dini told The Continuum.

Both episodes have been completed for some time and were previewed last summer at the San Diego comics convention. They essentially complete an eight-part Darkseid saga.

In the "Legacy" episodes, Darkseid strips Superman of his memory and adopts him as a son in an effort take over Earth. The brainwashed Superman leads an attack on Earth, drawing the hatred of mankind. Look for Supergirl, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, General Hardcastle, Emil Hamilton, Mercy and Granny Goodness to play key roles.

The story ends with a brutal fight between Superman and Darkseid.

"Legacy, Part One" was written by Rich Fogel, based on a story by Dini, and was directed by Curt Geda. "Legacy, Part Two" was written by Dini and Fogel, based on a story by Dini, and was directed by Dan Riba.

Ironically, the episodes were to be a new beginning for Superman - not the final episodes.

"It is kind of a weird way to end the series," producer Bruce Timm said. "It was supposed to be the first episode of the last season. And we were going to build up this whole thing of Superman being branded as a traitor and give us a little bit more edge to the character, to have people distrust him and be a little more fearful.

"We finished part one first and we got the order to do Batman Beyond right then, so before we could do part two - and it's a big, monster epic - we had to put all our horses on Batman Beyond. And part two was put on the back burner, so it actually became the last episode. It kind of worked out neat."

At San Diego, Timm took a "you never know" attitude toward the future of Superman in animation.

"At one point, we never thought we go back and do Batman. But the WB decided to do more Batman," Timm said. "With Superman, if there is a live-action franchise going again, they might say they want to do more Superman cartoons. Never say never."

Meanwhile, producers have plans to feature Superman in Batman Beyond, probably next season.
