May 25, 2000: George Reeves Original Superman Costume on Auction

The original 3 piece Superman costume worn by George Reeves in the filming of Superman and the Mole Men in 1951 is on auction at Ebay. The seller obtained the costume from Jim Hambrick, curator of the Superman museum in Metropolis, Ill in 1992. It comes with extensive documentation as to its authenticity as follows: (1) several handwritten letters from Hambrick on Superman museum letterhead. (2) letter of authenticity from Western Costume Co (the original maker of the costume). (3) letter of authenticity from well known appraiser Robert White, the famous JFK collector. (4) letter from Artech laboratories who I had analyze the costume in 1992 that concludes the costume is authentic. (5) photo of Thol (Si) Simonson (who was the special effects director on "The Adventures of Superman") with Jim Hambrick and the costume in 1986. (Hambrick obtained the costume from Simonson). This costume is the "flying costume" and has several strategically placed holes to help attach the legendary harness and wires used to support Reeves during flying scenes. Most importantly this is the "Brown & Gray" costume used in the early years of the series. This color scheme was used because it was determined these colors looked better on Black & White television. The costume shows obvious signs of wear, but overall is in very good condition. There are a few color examples of this costume out there, but only a couple of these black & white versions. The history and documentation is impeccable. The costume is without the belt & boots. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the advanced collector. Auction ends June 2, 2000.
