James Gunn Films First Scenes for New “Superman” Movie

Director James Gunn, discussing the commencement of filming for the 2025 “Superman” movie, revealed to Norwegian outlet VG that he shot the initial scene in Svalbard, Norway. Gunn emphasized the city’s unique Arctic ambiance, describing it as a beautiful location with a distinctive landscape not found elsewhere. He highlighted the natural beauty and varied terrain as key factors that led to choosing Svalbard for Superman’s Fortress of Solitude in the DCU.

“We have filmed the first scenes [in Svalbard] which show Superman fleeing to the Fortress of Solitude. We wanted a place that was beautiful and felt like being in the middle of the Arctic, so we looked at several places in the world. But there were many things that sold Svalbard for us over the other places. First, there is the natural beauty. But there’s also the fact that you’ll find a varied landscape here that you won’t find anywhere else. Nature gives a special feeling.”

Fortress of Solitude

The cast of “Superman” features David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Maria Gabriela de Faria as The Engineer.

Directed by James Gunn, “Superman” is scheduled to be released July 11, 2025.

I’m not really fond of the part about “Superman fleeing.” However, everything else in the description sounds nice and has me excited. I’m looking forward to more updates about this film.

‘The son of Jor El has fled!’

I hope they just mean he flew off to get some Guidance.

I really really really hope Gunn does something different this time and keeps the Kent’s alive also so Supes has a great support system. This aspect was one of my favorites post crisis and I enjoy any media where both Kent’s are alive, TAS, Lois and Clark and of course the comics

Hey sundevil82. Sorry I didn’t respond to you sooner regarding the possible Brandon Routh Superman series. Yeah, I hope it happens too someday. As for the quote of Superman fleeing, I’m thinking that Superman is fleeing to the fortress to either save someone, or that there is something there that he needs to stop or defeat a villian. Something like a Phantom Zone Projector perhaps. I honestly don’t think he’s fleeing there to escape someone or something. Whatever the case may be, we will find out next year, and I can’t wait to find out. 🙂

– I agree and I hope you’re right. Hopefully the Kents will stay alive. And hopefully, as you stated, “fleeing” just means he went to the Fortress of Solitude to get some guidance.

Fleeing? Could be Gunn Trolling or looking to elicit some backlash/news/conversation. He’s typically pretty deliberate with his wording, so I don’t think that was an accident. Much ado about nothing imo, but time will tell.
