The DC Universe just got a little brighter. Aaron Pierre, best known for his breakout role in Netflix’s “Rebel Ridge” and his upcoming turn as Green Lantern John Stewart in HBO’s “Lanterns”, has been cast in “Man of Tomorrow” — James Gunn’s sequel to last year’s “Superman”.
Gunn is once again writing and directing, with production set to kick off in Atlanta this April and run through the summer. David Corenswet returns as Superman and Nicholas Hoult reprises his role as Lex Luthor, with the two characters reportedly teaming up to take on Brainiac, the classic technological alien villain set to be played by German actor Lars Eidinger.
Pierre’s casting as John Stewart is more than just a fun cameo — it’s a direct expression of James Gunn’s vision for a cohesive DC screen universe where film and television characters share the same story world. The Green Lantern Corps’ galactic jurisdiction makes Stewart a natural fit in a story centered on Superman and an alien threat like Brainiac.
Much of the original “Superman” cast is expected back, including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Maria Gabriella de Faria as The Engineer.
For Pierre, this marks a rapid rise in Hollywood. After drawing widespread attention with his commanding performance in “Rebel Ridge”, he went on to appear in “The Morning Show” on Apple TV+, provided voice work for “Mufasa: The Lion King”, and most recently starred in “GOAT”. His DC debut as John Stewart arrives first in “Lanterns”, which is set to premiere on HBO in August.
“Man of Tomorrow” is shaping up to be a major expansion of the new DCU — and with Green Lantern now officially in the mix alongside Superman, Lex Luthor, and Brainiac, it looks like Gunn isn’t holding back.
“Man of Tomorrow” is scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
