Zack Snyder’s Thoughts on “Man of Steel” Sequel

Man of Steel

Had he been given an opportunity to move forward with another Superman movie starring Henry Cavill, director Zack Snyder revealed in a new interview that Brainiac would have been a possible villain for the next movie.

“We talked about a Brainiac movie,” said Snyder. “But I do think that the Kryptonians that are in the Phantom Zone are probably still around. And there was always a possibility for their return. Faora and whoever’s left. That was a thing that was always out there that we talked about as a possible sequel. I just think it’s best to give Superman these extaterrestrial challenges because I think you’ve got to be careful with — other than Lex Luthor, because, of course, you have to continue with Lex, because Lex is his real nemesis — but I think you really have to look outside of the Earth for challenges for him because of how powerful he is.”

Snyder explains that he loved working with Henry Cavill and would have continued to build the character of Superman in the direction already set in the first film.

“I don’t know that I would’ve taken him in a different direction than the direction I was taking him. I think Henry is a great Superman. I have a great time working with Henry, and I think that also, we endeavored to make him in Man of Steel, sort of a modern Superman in that, in his relationship to society and/or the modern world, we did that now, and like, what would happen if… And it’s kind of what the movie is about, frankly. Man of Steel‘s about, what if we really had a Superman? What would it mean? You know?”

To be honest I don’t think there will be anymore Snyder Superman films. It maybe possible for Henry to return in other heroes films such as Shazam 2 or the Flash, but I’m thinking there isn’t going to be a sequel to Man of Steel.

On the one hand, I wouldn’t take any bets on the near future of Superman’s cinematic outings. The combination of backlash against announced plans for a black Superman and that we know that “passionate” fans can mobilize to try and get their way.
On the other hand, by this point Snyder has shot his shot so to speak, and ultimately WB cares most about the Almighty Dollar, and really wants some of that sweet Marvel money. Which, style aside, Snyder hasn’t been able to deliver.

True, they are still trying to copy Marvel’s successful interconnected stories. Superman somewhat appearing in Shazam, Steffenwolf being mentioned in Aquaman and now rumors of possible cameos of other superheroes in the upcoming flash film. Even the Rock is trying to get Cavill back to be in his Black Adam film. I’ve heard that they share the same agent. I’m not sure if Cavill’s appearance in that film will happen now if Warner Media is moving away from that version, but who knows? I think it might be to early to know for sure. The new Superman film could be… Read more »

I get where he’s coming from and I wager most audiences would agree. I personally don’t, I want smaller Superman movies with big ones in-between to raise the stakes and I’m somehow experiencing Brainiac fatigue without Brainiac having actually ever been in a movie.

Then again, when you’re getting 300 million dollars to make a movie, you’re probably not going to do Metallo or Parasite, it would be a gamble.

I really wish Snyder had made this movie. It needed to happen between ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘BvS’, to bridge the 18-month gap between the battle of Metropolis and the start of the next movie and explain how Superman becomes a hero to so many people. I know a lot of people who comment here weren’t on board with the more nuanced portrayal of Superman in ‘MoS’, but I loved it.Watched the movie again (sixth time?) a couple of days back, and I still love it as much as I did the first time – and the action set pieces… Read more »

Yea..it’s too bad it didn’t happen. Everything Zack said is right on the money regarding the direction of this character.

Right now there’s a totally different management running the WB. And from here on out it won’t be doing any favors for the character of Superman. There’s more concern with appeasing “groups” of complaining people that might show up on their door steps with signs and wearing shirts with three over bearing letters on them. Trash….all of it!!

Signs and wearing shirts with three over bearing letters on them. You mean… n… W… o? The nWo? The New World Order? 4 Life!

I’m sorry. The wrestling fan in me couldn’t help myself. 😀

I just want another movie featuring Henry Cavill as Superman. I’ll even take cameos from other Justice League members.

Unfortunately the entire industry has been polluted. And to make matters worse, they’ve made it a point that if you’re ANYTHING BUT WITH US, you’re out! In other words the catering to today’s racial political environment is their number one goal to satisfy. Anybody in Phonywood doing or saying anything contrary, is shown the door and ostracized.
