October 1, 2012: David Goyer Discusses Writing "Man of Steel"

Man of Steel Italian website BadTaste.it caught up with screenwriter David Goyer at the Rome Fiction Fest recently, where he was promoting his new series "Da Vinci's Demons". They also asked him about his approach to writing films like "Man of Steel". Here's a translation from Italian to English of what was posted on the website...

Q: You are very capable at doing two things: creating fantastic and completely original stories, rich with supernatural or fantasy elements; and adapting other people's stories (particularly comic books) and reinventing them in a really original way. We know you've been working on a large DC Comics superhero project. What does this project have in common with your previous film work?

David Goyer: We are speaking about "Man of Steel", correct? What we did, myself and Christopher Nolan, was to try and bring in the same naturalistic approach we brought to the Batman trilogy. It's always a naturalist, realistic approach that we're looking for, to imagine these stories as if they could happen in the same world in which we live. That's not an easy thing to do with Superman, but that does not mean that we will be making the film dark, but in order to make this reboot we wanted to examine what could happen if a story like this really happened. How would ordinary people react? What repercussions would there be? What I really like doing is writing "genre" stories without a cartoonish element. I did the same with "Da Vinci's Demons", and I'll do the same with "Man of Steel".
