The name Clark Kent is recognizable to generations of fans, but never before has there been an interpretation of the Superman legend quite like Smallville. Growing up in Smallville, Kansas, Clark Kent (Tom Welling) is a teenager who is slowly discovering his destiny as the champion of justice who will one day be known the world over as Superman. Someday, he'll master his powers and true calling, but for now he just has to get through adolescence. With realistic portrayals and state-of-the-art special effects reinterpreting the Superman mythology from its roots, Smallville was written and developed by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar, based on the DC Comics characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Smallville is produced by Tollin/Robbins Productions and Warner Bros. Television Production Inc.

The WB's hit series Smallville provides a fascinating spin on Superman lore and is the highest rated show on The WB among people ages 18-34 and across all teen demographics. Smallville has consistently set ratings records, delivering double-digit growth across all 12-34, 18-34 and 18-49 demos. Since its debut on October 16, 2001, Smallville's viewership continues to climb.

  4. SLUMBER
Clark dreams that he is being pursued by a frightened young girl who needs his help. However, after he discovers she is actually the apparition of a comatose neighbor who should have woken up years ago, he enlists Lana's help to uncover the truth--which puts Lana in grave danger. Meanwhile, Lionel demands that Lex undergo a full psychological evaluation before Lex can return to LuthorCorp.
All songs in the episode are by the rock band R.E.M.

  5. PERRY
Perry White (MICHAEL McKEAN - "A Mighty Wind," "Best in Show," real-life husband of series star ANNETTE O'TOOLE), a once-promising journalist whose career was destroyed by Lionel Luthor, arrives in Smallville in search of alien stories for a tabloid news show. Although he is constantly inebriated, Perry believes he has witnessed Clark using his extraordinary speed, so he devises a dangerous scheme to expose Clark's superpowers. Meanwhile, Lex learns that Perry has powerful incriminating evidence of Lionel's past wrongdoings.

  6. RELIC
Lana's great-uncle, Dexter McCallum (TOM HEATON), who was convicted of murdering his wife 40 years ago, shows Lana a picture of the man he believes really killed her great-aunt--and she is shocked to notice that the drifter looks exactly like Clark. Convinced that the man was his Kryptonian father, Clark investigates and finds a Kryptonian medallion that allows him to see bits of the past--and the life that was planned for him long before he arrived on Earth. However, when Clark attempts to free Lana from the paranormal control, she tries to kill him. Meanwhile, Lex discovers that Chloe has been delving into Lionel's past and asks her to join forces with him against his dad. Singer/songwriter JOSH KELLEY performs.

However, when Clark returns to the mansion to investigate, he finds nothing amiss. He begins to wonder if what Lex described really happened, especially after Lionel discloses that Lex has had a psychotic breakdown and must be institutionalized.

  9. ASYLUM
Lex languishes in the sterile confines of Belle Reve Sanitarium, where his father has placed him. Scheming to escape and prove his sanity, Lex gets involved with three inmates who are also vengeful former residents of Smallville: murderous Van McNulty (JESSE METCALFE); Eric Summers (SHAWN ASHMORE), who once temporarily gained Clark's powers; and Ian Randall (JONATHAN TAYLOR THOMAS), who can physically split himself into two people. Meanwhile, Clark tries desperately to help Lex, who now knows Clark's secret identity. And Lana begins the painful recovery process after being trampled by a horse. She finds a kindred spirit in a determined fellow patient, Adam (IAN SOMERHALDER).

  10. WHISPER
While attempting to stop a robbery, Clark shoots a burst of heat vision that is accidentally reflected back into his eyes by a piece of Kryptonite, causing temporary blindness. He soon discovers that his body has developed extremely sensitive hearing to compensate for his vision loss. But as with all of his other gifts, Clark doesn't quite know how to control the new power at first.

  11. DELETE
Clark and Lana each try to kill Chloe for unknown reasons after they receive a mysterious e-mail from the Summerholt Institute. Clark must discover the source of these e-mails after Chloe reveals she has uncovered proof that the laboratory is involved in mind-control research--and someone wants to prevent her from writing an exposé. Meanwhile, Jonathan begins to suffer the consequences of his deal with Clark's biological father.

  14. OBSESSION
Clark is forced to use his powers within sight of Alicia (SARAH CARTER) a new girl at school, but he is surprised to find out she has powers of her own. Meanwhile, Lana asks Lex to investigate Adam (IAN SOMERHALDER).

In a desperate attempt to keep his brother alive, Garrett straps a meteor-rock bomb to himself and demands that Vince be given Jonathan's liver.

  16. CRISIS
Clark receives a panicked call from Lana and hears a gunshot before the line goes dead--but when he finds her, he is stunned to discover she is alive and well. When Lex takes Clark to the LuthorCorp laboratory, they find all of the staff murdered, and Lex suspects his father is responsible.

  17. LEGACY
When Jonathan acts strangely, Clark believes that his Kryptonian father, Jor-El (voice of TERENCE STAMP - "Superman II"), is sending Jonathan messages and is the cause for his father's withdrawal from the family. Clark goes down to the caves to confront his biological father, but Lionel finds Clark there and begins putting the pieces together--leading him straight to reclusive scientist Dr. Virgil Swann (CHRISTOPHER REEVE), who knows Clark's origins. As the two billionaires face off, a deal is struck, and Lionel's true motives are revealed.

  18. TRUTH

  19. MEMORIA
To regain key information about his father's past that he lost when his memory was erased, Lex joins an experimental program headed by Dr. Garner (MARTIN CUMMINS). Clark learns the Kawatche legend that the knife can kill Naman's greatest enemy and sets out to reclaim the weapon before Jeremiah can use it on Lionel to fulfill the ancient prophecy. Series star JOHN SCHNEIDER directed the episode.

  21. FORSAKEN
Clark decides to tell Lana his secret so they can finally be together. Meanwhile, a rogue FBI agent kidnaps and tortures Pete to force him to reveal Clark's secret. 22. COVENANT
Kara (ADRIANNE PALICKI), a beautiful girl who possesses superpowers and claims to be from the planet Krypton, tries to entice Clark to fulfill his destiny. Overwhelmed, Clark turns to his parents for advice but is shocked when Kara forces Jonathan to finally reveal the deal he made with Clark's biological father. Also, Clark makes a discovery that ultimately redefines his relationship with Lex, and Clark's relationship with Lana reaches a new stage.
