Smallville Season 4

September 12, 2004: More Interviews with Al Gough

As you know the Superman Homepage conducted its own interview with Al Gough on Friday... Well other websites were also able to interview Al Gough on the same day to ask him about the up-coming 4th season of "Smallville". Be warned! There are spoilers amongst these interviews. Here are some excerpts from those interviews...

Comics Continuum interview:

Q: How did the casting of Margot Kidder come about?

A: In the season opener, there's a very crucial scene where Martha has called Dr. Swann, looking for help on how to get Clark back. He's come out of that void that we left him in at the end of the season as Kal-El, sort of his fully realized Kryptonian counterpart. And Martha knows that Clark is still in there somewhere and contacts Dr. Swann.

Initially, we had conversations with Christopher Reeve about returning. But unfortunately due to schedule conflicts -- he just finished directing a movie in New Orleans when we were shooting -- we weren't able to make that work. So we had idea, there should be an emissary from Dr. Swann since this piece of information, quite frankly, can come from nobody else but him. He's the only one who has enough information about Clark to help. Martha, who, as you'll recall from the season finale, is sort of The Last of the Mohicans.

So then we sort of do what we usually do, and that's look at the movies and see who we haven't had on the show yet. And, we thought that the idea of her, coming from Dr. Swann, would be great. She plays Brigette Crosby, who I believe is a character from the comics, as well. Down the line, I think she works at S.T.A.R. Labs.

So we called up Margot Kidder, and she was more than game to revisit the Superman legend. So she's in Episode 1 and we'll see her in Episode 6, as well. It's fun because she has a scene with Annette O'Toole, so it's sort of Lois Lane and Lana Lang from the movies getting together again.

KryptonSite interview:

Q: Can you tease anything else that we might see on the show this year?

A: I think you will see at some point, a very different Lionel Luthor coming out of prison. You will see Lex get darker. You will see what the tattoo on Lana's back means, and how does she tie to the greater mythology. You will see Clark really struggling, dealing with Lana with another guy. You will see Lex struggling, seeing Lana with another guy. That's another dynamic that was sort of hinted at that you'll start to see as the season progresses.

Devoted to Smallville interview:

Q: Many fans are looking forward to Lana's Tattoo storyline. Does the tattoo itself lead back to Clark in anyway?

    A: Yes it does.

Q: Will that have any significance throughout the whole season or just a specific amount of episodes?

A: No, it is pretty much a big part of the season. That storyline becomes that we sort of unravel it. You will see that it actually plays a big... Lana has a very big piece of the puzzle this season.

Q: That means more of her and the storyline within that tattoo?

A: Yes. Pretty much in the second and third episode of the season that is when it will actually kick in the season. The first of her coming back to Smallville, her relationship with Jason which Clark will hopefully will find out. How does everyone react when it is discovered? Lana investigating how the hell she got the tattoo. You see that. You see her at the Talon. I'm sorry, not running the Talon, but in the apartment. She is definitely moving on with her life.
