Stephen Amell shared the following photo on Twitter showing he and Grant Gustin standing with Tyler Hoechlin, who is wearing an all black Superman costume.
Taken during the filming of The CW’s upcoming “Elseworlds” superhero crossover event, the black costume with a white or silver “S” and high collar would appear to be from an alternate Earth.
The special 3-night “Elseworlds” crossover event will begin in “The Flash” on Sunday, December 9 at 8.00pm ET, and then continue in “Arrow” on Monday, December 10 at 8.00pm ET, and will conclude with “Supergirl” on Tuesday, December 11 at 8.00pm ET.
Ok,it’s different. I don’t know why it’s black, but I am curious about it. There could be a million reasons why it’s black. It could be a recovery suit, it could be a suit used for tactical purposes, it could be Kryptonian clothing used for a scene with Kara and her mom and the other survivors of Krypton. I do hope it’s not a version of Superman who is evil like Regime Superman or Ultraman. That last one I’m hoping is not the case. I also noticed that Grant and Stephen are wearing the same shoes. What’s that about?
Besides the suit’s color change, I noticed two possibly three other differences.
1. The S insignia seems to be bigger than the previous one he had
2. The boots look to be a different style
3. He has a collar
I was hoping for something more “Classic”, but I am intrigued.
Hopefully this doesn’t mean that the Superman of Supergirl’s Earth isn’t in it. I mean it would a real gip to finally get Superman involved in the big crossover only to have the only version we see is a villain from an alt. Earth.
Judging by how they have used the character in the past to put over Supergirl and the fact this is marketed as a “multiverse crossover,” that’s exactly what I’m expecting.

Ugh, unfortunately that’s exactly what I’m expecting. Superman’s the evil ruler, Batwoman is fighting him, and Lois is either going to be made to appeal to him at the end or she’ll be featured in a flash back where she dies and what made him go all evil (or both). This is a repeated storyline that just about every Superman story has gone through. I would love to be wrong, absolutely love to be, but so far there has been nothing to show otherwise. Probably the “mighty” Supergirl will have to rescue Superman in the crossover event.
good lord that is ugly…
It’s not like we haven’t seen a live Superman in black before. For example, we had Dean Cain in a black Superman outfit in one of the season finales of Lois and Clark. Tom Welling had a black trench coat prototype suit in season nine of Smallville. And lastly Cavill wore a black suit in Man of Steel. Whether or not he wore it in Snyder’s version of Justice league is a different story. But all we know so far on Tyler’s return as Superman is that he’s back in black. Even if this is an evil version of Superman, there’s also the possibility that the good Superman will fight and prevail over the evil version. As I said before, right now there are many possibilities on why he might be wearing the black suit. I say, wait and see.
It might also be funeral atire for a hero who has fallen in the fight against this year’s crossover villain. There could be any possible reasons why for this suit.
The suit looks terrible with those awful cape buckles again. I don’t see the mighty Supergirl’s cape connected with buckles. Plus in that photo, Superman looks like a Hobbit next to the other two guys.
