Syfy Green Lights “Krypton” Season 1

Variety reports that Syfy has officially picked up the “Krypton” concept for a full first season.

From Warner Horizon Television and DC Comics, “Krypton” takes place years before the Superman legend we know, when the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This drama follows the Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known.

“Krypton” is produced by Warner Horizon Television. The pilot is written by David Goyer (Man of Steel) with Ian Goldberg (Once Upon A Time, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). Goyer also acts as executive produce through his company Phantom Four with Damian Kindler (Sleepy Hollow), who serves as showrunner. Colm McCarthy (Peaky Blinders) directed the pilot.

The cast includes: Cameron Cuffe (The Halcyon) as Seg-El, Georgina Campbell (After Hours) as Lyta Zod, Ian McElhinney (Game of Thrones) as Val-El, Elliot Cowan (Da Vinci’s Demons) as Daron Vex, Ann Ogbomo (Wonder Woman) as Primus Alura Zod, Rasmus Hardiker (Your Highness) as Kem, Wallis Day (The Royals) as Nyssa Vex and Aaron Pierre (Britannia) as Dev-Em.

“Krypton” will premiere in the 2017-2018 TV season.

IMHO that’s an overly negative response. I for one am interested to see this. I’m not saying it will be good because I don’t know and won’t know until I see it but I am interested.

Not everything has to appeal to everyone’s tastes. Just because this isn’t your thing doesn’t mean it shouldn’t exist.

Also a poll on this very website a month ago had 54% of voters saying they were going to watch it with 30% undecided and only 16% overly negative towards the show.

I enjoy a soap opera as much as the next man. However, this is being sold as “Superman”, i.e., if you like Superman, tune in. You could re-title the show “Daxam”, and lose nothing from what has been shown. Shows like Smallville and Gotham have paved the way for programs that have gossamer links to any reason for existing. Krypton follows their lead.

I’ll watch anything Superman related, but David Goyer… There is your liability.

While I still think a show starring Superman’s grandad is tantamount to making an AUNT MAY movie, I have to say, the trailer looked entertaining all on it’s own. Basically “Game of Thrones: In Space.” The touches of Superman iconography are basically just icing. That’s how I plan to view it, anyway.
