1Rating – 1 (out of 5): “…surely we don’t need to measure anything. We’re women.” – Cat Grant

Unfortunately, Cat Grants words didn’t apply to this episode. There was a demonstrative need to measure something, and the insecurity that fostered that need has left this critic with little desire to continue on with Supergirl. The series isn’t perfect, and such has been noted in previous reviews. However, Supergirl has always presented more to enjoy than to dislike. A likable cast. An upbeat and positive tone. Most of all, an almost unimpeachable lead, through whom viewers have watched the adventures of the Maid of Might. The end of Kara and Mon-El’s relationship was very well done. Cat Grant was on point and will be sorely missed. 1,000 pardons can be given for the misuse of Jimmy, Winn, J’onn, and every man on show who doesn’t seem to know what to do unless directed. 1,000 more for a storyline that mirrors the finale of “Myriad” and “Better Angels” to the point of indolence. Still, while I may be whatever percentage of comic fan, gamer, critic, Humanist, etc… I am 100% when it comes to Superman. I have seen Superman used to prop up numerous characters. He is used to give Batman a lift. He is used to allow The Flash a boost. A victory against Superman allows bragging rights for any character, but while it’s excepted of nearly everyone else, I did not think that Supergirl would be unable to resist and take the bait.

Forget the slugfest; that cannot be taken seriously. Last season Supergirl couldn’t defeat Alex in a Kryptonite suit. Superman is a much more formidable task, especially when he believes he’s fighting against a foe that would mean the death of innocents. If the theft of all things Superman has been limited to the cheap shot cum knock out, there would be something to enjoy. Supergirl was not satisfied. We learn that Superman was operating at “full strength” and Kara is Earth’s champion. Supergirl was not satisfied. Supergirl again shows that she is Superman’s superior in sparring. Supergirl was not satisfied. Something is needed, as it is not enough to be stronger that Superman, since no one is going to believe that. No, Supergirl needs to be better than Superman, and it was with this unrestrained lurch towards agenda, that Superman pronounces Kara his better, and how he is in awe of her. The blatant insecurity displayed with such a move, extirpated any impetus on my part to continue viewing Supergirl. Where viewers were introduced to a dynamic of two heroes without the one-upmanship, or measuring match early in the season, Supergirl decided that Kara didn’t measure up somehow, and lessened her in the reaching for what was already there. What was a display of the two being heroes, peers, and equals, was dashed for bragging rights that won’t be remembered long, rather focussing on the excellent character the two possess. Supergirl has liberally stolen from Superman’s mythos, his supporting cast, his storylines, his villains, even his theme music, but the line should have been drawn at his character. The aforesaid gone, I doubt I’ll be returning for season three. There is a reason that Superman is the World’s Greatest Hero, and Supergirl reminds us of that grounding. Superman doesn’t need to bring anyone down to build himself up. His example is one that, if emulated, is more than enough to place one on equal footing, just look at the portrayal of Barry Allen on The Flash. Certainly someone mentioned this to those who crafted the story on Supergirl, but nevertheless, they persisted.

I’m off the show. Supergirl stronger than Superman? Nah, sorry. They tore Superman down to elevate Supergirl. They didn’t show the character any respect all because of ‘girl power’. It’s so overused these days and I’m sick of it.

I obviously didn’t watch it and as such I can’t have an emotional response to this, but I will say, I was 99% sure that’s exactly what they’d do. It was pretty obvious, with their track record, that the moment I saw the preview with Superman and Supergirl fighting, I knew this would be exactly why they’d do it. The writing was on the wall. I’ve made my feelings clear about this show and its direction and I believe I’ve backed my rationale up fairly well. If the writers were middle-aged men, “Supergirl” would be their brand new, hot red… Read more »

It’s been shown in the comics where Supergirl is stronger than Superman but he is the smart fighter out of the two so with his brain on Silver K and most of his reasoning thrown out the window I could see where Supergirl beat him in a slug match. But, as mentioned in the review I don’t think it needed to be thrown in every ones faces time and time again that Supergirl had won. Under different circumstances (No Silver K) I think the outcome would have been different. I do think Superman needed to let Supergirl take the lead… Read more »

Where was this shown? What comic?

I don’t remember a specific issue, but after she returned pre-Infinite Crisis, the consensus from DC was that she was stronger; however, “stronger” in that instance meant she had higher tolerance for Kryptonite, because her ship was lodged in the stuff for decades.

I should make a correction and say that I can not remember a specific fight between the two but there were hints thrown around so it’s always been a “what if”? I suppose. During the New 52 when Supergirl first encountered Reign and The Worldkillers, Reign said she had been watching Supergirl for sometime and had determined she was the stronger than Superman because she had seen SG win fights against Superman, though it could be argued that Superman was showing restraint to avoid harming her. I believe Reign was referencing Superman’s first encounter with SG where she didn’t know… Read more »

And I think I remember during the Superman/Batman The Supergirl From Krypton storyline Batman made a suggestion that he thought Supergirl could be stronger than Superman because of how she metabolized rays from yellow sun faster

Now that you mention it, I don’t remember the explanation, but I do get a flashback of Batman telling Superman “she’s stronger than you (are)” in the early issues of that storyline.

This is a serious conflation based on one panel of a comic. It’s tInternet lore, right up there with Pink Kryptonite making Superman gay. Batman tells Superman that Supergirl “might” be more powerful, but he also says he has other theories. Supergirl later takes off and when Superman tries to find her, she’s moved beyond his detection. From this, lads have determined that Supergirl is more powerful, stronger, faster than Superman. However, few read the stories that followed were Supergirl was defeated by Superman, and where he states that he could stop her, out race her, etc., anytime he wanted.… Read more »

They really went overboard with the elevation of Supergirl at the expense of Superman. I guess they needed a reason to NOT bring him back anymore. After all, who needs Superman when Supergirl is around.

I guess Batgirl will be kicking Batman’s @$$ in the new movie.

I couldn’t agree more with this review. And it’s so transparent, it’s pathetic. The continued lack of imagination and competency is astounding when it comes to Superman.

A horrendous mess of massive proportions. The use of Superman was one of the lowest points I have seen. It’s no wonder we saw Tyler H with his finger out. That’s exactly what this episode deserved. You know men are inherently stronger than women anyway so it would make sense that even though they have the same powers, a man just by virtue of him being a man would have the strength advantage. The fight was pathetic. And silver K???? The overly dramatic lines given to Cat Grant were at the point of being laughable. But hey at least the… Read more »

The last few episodes had Kara and Supergirl one in the same. There must be what…..100 people now that know her duel identity.

This is the standard for the DCTV and I wager it’s the standard for The CW in general, judging by Smallville standards. The hero isn’t allowed to have a secret identity, they must be as public as possible to become “relatable”. That’s some Marvel s**t right there.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Tearing down Superman to lift up Supergirl was deplorable. I hope DC never allows them to use him again. This is just one more reason to stop watching. I thought you were trying to be a class act Supergirl, But I guess I was mistaken!

I too am over Superman being used as a stepping stone. There is a way to make it plausible for Kara to be more suited for a fight, but of course they go back to this tired trope. They must go to the same school of lazy writing that has plagued superman. Berlanti and co., have shown that they aren’t very good at sustaining a story beyond the first or second season of these shows. Arrow hasn’t been the same since season 2. Flash dipped in quality mid way through season 2. Legends and Supergirl have been hit or miss.… Read more »

Hi everyone. this is my first time commenting on the message boards. I figured that I would say what’s on my mind on the subject of Tyler Hoechlin’s version of Superman. I had noticed that there are many unhappy comments on the season two finale of Supergirl. I for one was alright with the episode. I do agree that Superman was underplayed a bit and that his role could have been better, however this is Supergirl’s story. I think that the only reason that Superman said that “she is the Champion of Earth”, is that Kara should be the champion… Read more »

I haven’t heard Really anYone say anything bad about Tyler as Superman. I think what people have a problem with is how Superman was written in this particular episode and that was basically being, as T.A. Put it, a lift for supergirl. There were plenty of ways to have Supergirl needing to be the one to enter the fight without having to drag down superman. They do that enough in other comics and movies. The first two episodes of the season were good because they actually did not do that and they showed them as equals. In the finale, they… Read more »

You won’t find much contention with Tyler’s performance here. There was backlash when he was cast, but his performance has been very well received. I didn’t see this last episode, but I quite liked him myself in the first two episodes of this season; people liked him so, in fact, that they wanted a Superman show spin-off. I’m also in the (apparently) minority that doesn’t care about the finger thing. Everyone’s problem is with the writing; some mind the treatment of Superman, I’m personally a lot more bothered by the agenda, the hypocrisy of the show and the the basic… Read more »

The responses you’re reading aren’t to Hoechlin’s performance, but the treatment of Superman’s character. No one has said that Hoechlin has done a bad job, but, rather, that Superman’s character was treated badly.

As I said before, Supergirl has had bad episodes as well as good episodes. Dragging Superman down to boost Supergirl’s own rep in her show was clearly a mistake, and it’s good that we as fans have these discussion boards. It shows what fans want in Superman related movie,tv,comic, and video games. Maybe the people in charge of Supergirl will see how many Superman fans were upset by the episode ad say” well clearly we made a mistake last season with making Superman look weaker than his cousin. Maybe we can fix that this season by giving him more to… Read more »

It’s early in the day to start apologizing for them. Before we go into “give it/them a chance” mode, why not allow for more discussion? I’m less like to give Supergirl another go without some sound reasoning.

As I said before it is good that we have discussion boards to talk about these things. I do think it’s early to abandon the Supergirl series without a good discussion about it. And as I said before the show has had both ups and downs.just because the season finale was a down, doesn’t mean that it should be abandoned entirely just yet. Let’s wait and see what they have planned. Since the show has been renewed for a third season maybe things will get better.

Superman and Supergirl both stand for hope. Forgivness is a part of hope. And since Superman said that the S “stands for hope”, maybe we should think of taking his lead on this one. I for one forgive what they did to Superman for the finale. I even forgive Tyler for flipping the bird, though that is a different topic in itself. My point is we are superman fans, all of us. We should be supporting superman in television as well as in movies, comics, and video games.I want to see Superman succeed in all of these genres. I mean… Read more »

while I appreciate what you’re saying, I must respectfully disagree. I don’t believe that we should just be grateful for anything that has an ‘S’ or is called Superman. We should still have a standard for how he is portrayed otherwise he will fall further and further away from what he is supposed to be. Like I said earlier, I enjoyed Tyler’s portrayal, my problem was with the writing in this particular episode making superman more of a prop than a character. How would you feel if Batgirl kicked all the male characters of Batman’s family including Bruce Wayne himself and the writers make her their superior and Gotham’s ultimate protector? Every Batman fan would be in an uproar. They made Superman Kara’s b*tch! I’m a woman and I find that troubling.

This is just my personal headcanon but the way I see it this is a multiverse and on this particular Earth Supergirl is the big banana, the head honcho, the numero uno, the number one hero of her Earth. Yes there is A Superman on her Earth but out there in the multiverse there is a Superman who is the number one hero of his Earth and is stronger than Supergirl. I mean seriously with infinite Earths and infinite versions of these characters surely there can be at least one Earth where the balance of power is different. Also there… Read more »

No way. Superman’s appearance early in the season established him as the World’s Greatest Hero. When he arrives, everyone reacts to him as such. If you want to rewrite history, that’s on you.

sundevil82

in fact, didn’t they used to say that in the intro? Many ways they could have approached this and they chose the worst way imaginable. Just off the top of my head, they could have incorporated the death of superman to explain his absence. That is reason enough right there for her to rise up and take the mantle. But…Nope. Let’s just take him down a peg instead. You know, because reasons.

andramus

I think you’re missing my point.

Superman WAS the World’s Greatest Hero and in the eyes of many of the populace he still is.

But this is Kara’s story and her star is waxing whilst Superman’s is waning.

And I’m only referring to this particular version of the characters. Not every incarnation ever. Just the ones on this Earth.

liheibao
Member

Again, no way. Why is Superman’s star waning? So Kara can shine? That’s exactly what they showed wasn’t necessary earlier on. The amount of apology needed to say otherwise is tremendous. Even you’re stating that her star can only climb if Superman’s falls. On this Earth, Superman is the World’s Greatest Hero. He’s stated to be the most powerful man in the universe. Had the show established differently, I wouldn’t contend with you, but that just isn’t the case.

andramus
Member
I’m not saying Superman is literally waning/declining. I’m saying Kara is waxing/growing to surpass him so his decline is relative to hers. He is still who he is and is no weaker or lesser than he was before but she is becoming greater than she was and he is. On this Earth Superman once held the role/carried the baton of Earth’s Champion. Now that role/baton is being passed to Supergirl. Personally for me I have no problem with idea that Superman was the World’s Greatest Hero at one point in time and that others succeed him in the role down… Read more »

Again, I wouldn’t contend with you if we had been shown differently. You cannot rewrite history. This is the same Supergirl who couldn’t defeat Alex in a Kryptonite suit, and needed Superman to bail her out against one of his villains. What’s changed?

I think that the fact that you have no problem with the events, is allowing you to excuse the egregious nature of them. “I like it so it all makes sense to me,” which is fair and fine, but not really suitable for genuine discourse.

This show is such a mess. The characters have random motivations (Jimmy is a photographer, then he’s Kara’s love interest, then he’s over her, then he’s in charge of Catco, then he’s a crime fighter, etc.). The stories are also too predictable and lacking in any real sense of drama. The season finale with “Superman” (yes, that’s in quotes for a reason) is just another example of how insecure the writers are with trying to make Supergirl a credible superhero. Rather than show through engaging stories how Kara has come into her own, they just make Superman into a punching… Read more »

This episode can not be compared to the beginning of the season. Superman in those two was done pretty decently. This episode flushed all that down the drain. That’s the problem with a show of this caliber. Once your done with all the character introductions and all the saves the day now comes the hard part. And that’s producing stories that have some challenge to them for the main character. We’ve quickly slipped into the soap opera stage and gotten more into the touchy feelings areas. ” does all the complaints matter? ” let me rephrase that since I may not have clarified well enough what I was trying to say, and I don’t want my words to be spoken out of context. Oops does it matter not doesn’t matter. And yes it does matter that people complain because we all care about Superman. The CW Superman was supposed to be the most powerful man in the universe, pff…not even close. At least Smallville’s Superman was pre-crisis level. I’m glad they didn’t get Tom Welling to play Superman again. I hate the CW.

They did something similar in the show Smallville if I recall. Episode three of season 10 titled Supergirl. Supergirl comes back to deal with the darkness that is heading to earth because Jor-el doesn’t think Clark can handle it. I just don’t understand why people are so upset about this. Let’s not forget that this is a TV show! The CW since day one has always done things differently. But in saying that one would think by now that their directions of theses characters would be somewhat set as far as how they should be portrayed. I suppose that the fact that CW has done things differently, we shouldn’t be alarmed at how they’ve portrayed Superman. Different to be sure but at the same time, SLOPPY! Again I apologize for the word funeral, the dictation app can be tricky.

I hope you understand that word was not my intended word. Look I’m a nice guy, I’m sure you are too. Maybe we can agree to disagree? Can we do that?

Believe me, that last sentence was an honest mistake, I didn’t proofread it.

Just when I think I’m out…this site pulls me back in. While I completely understand everyone having problems with how Superman was presented,it didn’t bother me. Simply because it’s not his show. It’s her show and if he comes in and is GOD among everyone then you ask the question (Well…where the hell have you been the last year dude????). I think the second time they punched us in the gut with it is what seems to be everyone’s issue. Like, we know….we heard you the first time…Move along!!! The episode itself was pretty entertaining. I have a huge nitpick… Read more »

One thing I noticed about all or at least most of the “offensive” lines in the episode that elevated Kara above Superman was that it was Superman saying them. Personally I think this leaves some wriggle room as to how accurate what Superman said was. For example when he said that he didn’t think he could make the same decision Kara did with Mon-El if it was Lois he may honestly have felt that way when he said it. Yet if he had been placed the same situation he may have made the same choice as Kara. He just doesn’t… Read more »

I don’t know, would he pick Lois? I would assume he would make sure that would never happen, but if this was an alternate version of the Christopher Reeve version would he also have the power to turn back time to save Lois if he couldn’t before? I hope he wouldn’t turn out like regime Superman.

Steve Wright,
Sending Mon-el to Earth one is a good idea. Plus Barry gave Kara a device to travel between her earth and his. So theoretically speaking, if Mon-el went there Kara could still visit him any time she likes. And from the looks of it Barry could use someone of Mon-el’s abilitys to help fight the super villains on his earth.

I guess we will have to wait and see where the show takes Mon-el.

I know I asked this question on a different post for a different news article, but will we be seeing the worldkillers if reign will be showing up next season?

Speaking about Mon-El. Tell me again, what exact powers does he poses? Don’t forget an episode or two ago had him pointing a gun at his mother exclaiming they were not invulnerable on earth. Then she goes up against Supergirl. Just more inconsistency with this show. Gobble, gobble!! Big turkey! The handling of Superman-gobble, Cat Grants lines-gobble, missing characters-gobble, Kara/Supergirl now one in the same-gobble. Sorry could go on but my gobbler is getting tired!!!

Super strength, Super Leaping. and he’s invulnerable to everything but Lead. Hence the bullets hurting them.

I believe Mon-el’s powers were super strength, invulnerability with the exception of lead, and from what I could tell from the last episode of the season super agility. I do remember him saying in an episode when asked who he was, that he was the other superman. I’ve heard people say he was superboy in the comics at one point. Is that true? I don’t really follow Mon-el in the comics. I know that he did briefly incorporate Superman’s symbol on his chest about 6-7 years ago.

As I said before if you like it, watch it and enjoy. If not, don’t watch it. No reason for anybody to get upset. I see from the opinion poll this week that there are people who like the show, even if there are some things that are not traditionally would be in a superman related show that superman would say and do. But ya know what? That’s ok. Everybody has a preference. I like Tyler’s version because he reminds me of Chris Reeve in his own way. Oddly too he reminds me of Dean Cain, and George Reeves. As… Read more »

Well if he reminds you of any of the previous men who played the role then you must be seeing something that only someone with super vision can see. Because one would need super vision to see through this mess. I’m not sure what TH possesses that would possibly remind you of any previous actors. Who does he look like?..None of them. Who does he comparatively act like?..None of them. How has he been portrayed like on this show?..None of them. So what has he done that’s actually comparative?..Nothing!

I will say, that it is nice to read on how much the fans care for superman. That this is the best website for Superman. I have not read a single mean thing about him. Yes I’ve read comments that are negative about a show or movie, and yes I’ve read comments about which actors who have played the man of steel the best and who did not, but the point that I’m making is that dispite the differences of opinions, the fans care for Superman. I’m not talking about anyone version. I’m talking about Superman. So in conclusion to… Read more »

redcape,
No need to get upset about my view on Tyler’s superman.
As I said before I think he reminds me of reeve in his own way. No need to get upset. If you don’t like him, that’s fine. You can have your own opinion. That’s fine. I on the other hand will not change my opinion. If you don’t like this version, then I say again. Don’t watch it. Please let others enjoy it if they do.

I’m sorry Steve, I guess I just gave the wrong advice. I just want everyone to be happy with superman. I meant no disrespect to the fans, or the supermanwebsite. Please accept my apologies.

I’m still new to these posts and I just thought maybe it would be a good place for me to talk about my favorite superhero. i don’t mean to argue with others. I was only trying to be helpful with my advise on the the ” if you don’t like it don’t watch it” comment. I can see now how it would be offensive to people. Again I’m sorry Steve. I truly meant no disrespect to the fans or the site.

Spidey……just for the record. I’m not upset. Sometimes when it comes to the internet an attitude appears to be conveyed. And some times it might be intended. I would like to think that most of the time it’s not intentional.
