October 12, 2016: Behind-the-Scenes “Supergirl” Season 2 Reveals

160829-Season2Executive producer Ali Adler sat down with Empire Online to talk about Season 2 of “Supergirl” and the thinking behind what will be taking place.

Why Superman is appearing in the first two episodes

“It’s sort of weird if we don’t tell the story of her famous cousin. It’s like if your brother was a rock star, we’d have to tell that story if we were doing the story of your life. So it’s important to tell that story and it seemed like a natural time to tell it. At its core, Supergirl’s not only a show about girl power, but about a powerful girl. She really is the essence and the core of the show, but we’re thrilled that Tyler Hoechlin came and we’re so honored that we were granted amazing access to this tremendous, iconic character in Superman.”

Superman villain Metallo makes his presence known

“Metallo is such an iconic character in the DC Universe, and we’re so impressed with how it’s been handled, even in terms of the costume itself. Kiersten Ronning, who is the costume designer, is just so tremendous with her designs. All these phases that we’re seeing in our villains at the top of the season are just people and villains from the gallery of rogues. These are people that we’ve really looked forward to meeting since our childhoods, and now we get to humanize them. Someone like Metallo definitely fits into that category.”

I like this show, but it’s pretty much “Superman without actually being Superman”. CW is getting to have it’s cake and eat it too. I mean – Metallo? Come on. Just suck it up and give us a Superman series.

I don’t really see anything necessarily wrong with Superman and Supergirl sharing rouges and having a villain originate as a Supergirl opponent first. I think it can just be frustrating because Superman’s never really had a full-on live action tv show like this one or movie series that showcased his rouges gallery well despite how many times he’s been on the screen. I mean it’s 2016 and we still haven’t even really got passed Lex and Zod in the movies.

But I agree with wanting a Superman spin-off tv show absolutely.

Supergirl should be a spin-off of Superman – not the other way around.

Superboy was an extremely low budget, poorly written series nearly 30 years ago. Lois and Clark was a rom-com from 25 years ago.
Smallville was a teen romance series about Clark Kent that only teased about Superman. At this point, all of these series are old, cheesy, and outdated.
And – who cares about the Krypton series in production.

Let’s have an honest-to-goodness Superman series that has the budget it needs, excellent writers, and respect for the character.

Just referencing about his rogues gallery that appeared on TV more than anything else is all. Keep Calm and call Superman 😉

@Kal-Ed More or less what Supermaniac said though there are actually things I personally enjoy about all those series but in various ways they’re still just not the total package. Supergirl basically gets to be something so much closer to that which is awesome but I just can’t help but want that for Superman to. ..and yeah ideally you would have had a Superman show first but I can live with it being the other way around. Heck Tyler’s Superman felt a lot like catching up with a guy who we’d already known for 2 or 3 seasons. Besides Superman’s… Read more »
