Proper 2-Part “Death of Superman” Animated Movie Adaptation Announced

Warner Bros. Animation, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced during San Diego Comic-Con that a faithful adaptation of the famous story of the death and return of the Man of Steel will be released just in time for its 25th Anniversary as two separate feature-length animated movies.

The first part of the two-parter will be released in late 2018. Adapting the legendary story of Superman’s fatal battle with Doomsday, this will actually be the second DC Universe Original Movie to adapt the material. The first, 2007’s “Superman: Doomsday”, was the very first DC Universe Original Movie and greatly condensed and altered the original comic book event to fit within its 75-minute running time. The upcoming adaptation will be more faithful to the source material, much less condensed and will include many of the fan-favorite moments from the story that were left out of Doomsday.

Finally, in early 2019, look for “Reign of the Supermen”, the second part of the two-part adaptation. While we’ll have to wait for an official synopsis to learn all of the details, that name should be a familiar one to Superman fans and suggests we’ll be seeing the rise of the Superman alternates that took his place during the year after his death. (For those unfamiliar with the story, they were Steel, Cyborg Superman, Superboy and the Last Son of Krypton.) This part of the Death and Return of Superman was greatly simplified in Doomsday, which instead featured a single alternate Superman rather than the four we saw in the comics.

This surprised me alot when I first heard it. In fact, I thought it was a mistake when it was reported to me.

Not only are they doing a first and “remaking” a previous DCUA movie, in this case Superman Doomsday; they’re pulling a Dark Knight Returns, in making a 2-part film, which would mean a complete version released down the line.

Color me surprised and excited for this.

Please have the yellow S shield on the back of the cape this time. Tired of them being lazy and always leaving it out. No excuse now.

“No excuse” – I don’t know about that?

I’m sure the powers that be will find an excuse, as so many people want to be trendy, rather than accurate!

To say that Superman:Doomsday condensed a lot of the original story is completely false. The only ting in common it had compared to the comic was that Superman died. Different Doomsday, different story, different situations, ALL WAS DIFFERENT. I bought it anyway, but that’s not the point.

I couldn’t be more excited for this The Death of Superman but…more than 1 year waiting…And if they design characters using Dan Jurgens/Bret Breeding’s style they would reach perfection.

Sucks we have to wait until Late next year, but never the less I’m excited. I hope this film is great and gets all the support it needs from fans to make more Superman films

Awesome news!

Now do a proper, 2-part, adaptation of ALL-STAR SUPERMAN!

I mean, I’ll watch it and everything, but Death of Superman wasn’t the most elaborate or layered story in Superman’s history and they’ve done it already twice in animation (and I’d argue the JL/U version was better). There’s a lot more out there that could use an adaptation, especially when on the Batman side we’re getting things like Gaslight. There’s range for Bats, but for Superman it’s the same dead horse? Oh well, at least I hope they will include Conner in this version, because Jurgens and Co. have officially written him out of the current continuity and I’m a… Read more »

It is cool that this story will be made in the style of the original comicbook storyline. However, I feel that this story can be told only so many times. Ten years ago we had the animated version, and last year we had this story in Batman v Superman. Not to mention Smallvilles’s version of Doomsday, and Clark survived that fight. So that one doesn’t count I guess. How many more times can this story be told? I will still watch this version when it’s released, but will there be any more versions after this one? What if they make an animated… Read more »

I almost forgot the justice league unlimited doomsday. But again that one doesn’t count because superman survives his battle with doomsday. I think doomsday was even in an episode of the legion of superheroes season 1. The believe the episode was called phantoms I think. Where a villain known as Drax is accidentally released by Superman. Afterwords the legion trys to stop Drax but they are temporarily sent to the phantom zone. In the Zone they encounter phantoms that resemble a comic version of General Zod, and Doomsday shortly before escaping to help Superman to stop Drax. But I’m going… Read more »

Although I do admit I am looking forward to this film. I wonder who will be voicing the man of steel in this film?

Hm, -1?
Was it my comment on the red trunks?

I still don’t know why I was given a -1. I just pointed out that this story can be told only so many times.
It’s an interesting one, and one of the best that I’ve ever read, but how many more versions can we have?

Give me a big fat break. That’s all they can do with this character is to keep telling stories revolving around his death? No thanks…..seen that already and frankly don’t want to see it again. How cheap!

I will see this one just to see how it compares to the actual comic, but after this one I don’t know if I want to see my favorite superhero in a death and return movie again for a while. I mean there are so many other stories to be made for animated adaption. Stories like the death of Clark Kent. That one had the Villlian conduit. Or superman’s wedding to Lois Lane. That one would make an excellent animated film. There’s the trial of Superman. If I remember correctly it had to do with an alien race putting superman… Read more »

I meant to say lost son of Krypton. The one with Superman taking care of Zod’s kid.

I think whoever keeps giving me these -1s is trying to be funny. In one of my comments I mentioned the story of Superman the Lost son of Krypton. In that story, superman looks after Zod’s son and names him Christopher Kent. Yet I still get a -1 why? For mentioning a Superman story?

If it will indeed include Superboy, Cyborg, Eradicator and Steel, they may have to do a montage or add scenes featuring stories that lead to their appearances, such as: Cadmus, Exile and Hank Henshaw and crew crashing to Earth in their space shuttle.

Is someone in a mood today? Literally every comment is down-voted.

That being said, here’s my down-voteable comment on it. I want to see this. After the total waste of this story in BvS and the utter disregard for the source material in Superman: Doomsday, I want to see this done well.Especially the Reign of Supermen.

I’m looking forward to seeing the justice league go up against doomsday. I think that was an important element that was not included in the previous versions of the Death of Superman.

I still think that there is no need to tell this story again, but that’s my opinion. I may get more -1s, but I’m not going to change my mind on how I feel on this film because of it.
But still, I’m going to see it. And I hope that it is true to the comic, because I think that story was one of the best Superman stories I’ve read. I just don’t want there to be a movie every two or three years about Superman’s death.

I’m also looking forward to the part about the reign of Supermen. Especially the parts on The Eradicator, and Cyborg Superman. I wonder if they will cast the same voice for those other two roles?

Personally I’ve been waiting and hoping for, them to do a true Adaption by the comic book version The Death & Return of Superman, like DC did with New Frontier and like with New Frontier, I hope they use the art and the same look from the comics. Plus I’m happy were finally getting Superman Cyborg, I think this is the first time he’ll be on film either live action or animated. On top of that getting Superboy, the Eradicator aka The Last Son of Krypton & Steel too, although it wasn’t till the end of The Return of Superman,… Read more »
