October 12, 2023: Legendary Comic Creator Keith Giffen Dies, Aged 70

Keith Giffen, the seasoned writer and illustrator of comic books, known for his co-creation of iconic characters like DC's Lobo, the Jamie Reyes incarnation of Blue Beetle, and Marvel's Rocket Raccoon, has passed away at the age of 70.

The news of his passing was humorously announced on Wednesday via a pre-written post on Facebook, stating, "I told them I was sick... Anything to avoid going to New York Comic Con, Thanxs," with a mischievous "Bwah ha ha ha ha" added.

His demise was confirmed by his longtime collaborator, Paul Levitz. "The sad news is now official: Keith Giffen has gone off to create new worlds that are beyond our living reach," Levitz wrote on Facebook. "Keith was probably the most fertile creative mind of our generation in comics. He had an infinite number of ideas, pouring constantly out."

"We did over 60 stories together," Levitz continued. "Many of them he made far better than they might have been with any other collaborator, because of his ideas and contributions to character moments and dramas. A few we had rough times on, but I think no more than could be expected in a long relationship."

Giffen gained recognition for both his writing and illustrating work in the 1980s and 1990s at DC Comics. He notably contributed to "Legion of Super-Heroes" during that period and co-crafted the extraterrestrial bounty hunter, Lobo, alongside writer Roger Slifer for the early '80s series "Omega Men." Additionally, in 1987, Giffen played a pivotal role in co-creating the "Justice League International" series with J. M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire, later expanding the franchise with the 1989 spinoff, "Justice League Europe," in collaboration with DeMatteis.
