July 9, 2015: Supergirl Pilot Screening - San Diego Comic-Con

Supergirl Screening By Luis Jaime

Every year, the San Diego Comic-Con screens upcoming, never-before-seen pilot episodes during their Wednesday Night "Preview Night." Not everyone who attends Comic-Con is able to purchase a Preview Night badge. Those lucky few that do are always in for something special. This year, on Wednesday, July 8, CBS screened SUPERGIRL inside Ballroom 20.

Ballroom 20 is the second largest room inside the San Diego Convention Center, with a seating capacity of approximately 4,200.

Once inside, they show some promotional TV spots from upcoming Warner Bros. shows, and then it's time for the World Premiere screening of SUPERGIRL.

The show begins on Krypton, 24 years ago, during the final moments before its destruction. This part of the story you probably already know: Baby Kal-El is placed in a rocket by his loving parents, and then blasted off into space. The part you DON'T know, is that a 13-year old Kara Zor-El, was sent in a second rocket, to protect her baby cousin. Kara says goodbye to her parents in a touching scene, then blasts off to follow her baby cousin to Earth.

Supergirl Unfortunately, the destruction of Krypton sent a shockwave that threw Kara's ship off course and into the Phantom Zone. She spent the next 24 years inside the Phantom Zone, and since time does not pass inside it, she hasn't aged at all when her ship finally makes it to Earth. During that time, baby Kal-El has grown up and revealed himself to the world as SUPERMAN. He places Kara with a foster family, the Danvers. They are scientists who had helped SUPERMAN with his abilities.

Fast forward a little over 10 years later, we see Kara all grown up, on her way to her job at CatCo. This media company is run by Cat Grant, the post powerful woman in National City. We also get introduced to James Olsen, who just got hired at CatCo. He moved from Metropolis to National City for his new job.

Later, at Kara's apartment, we meet Alex, Kara's foster sister. They have a great conversation about how Kara wants to do more with her life than just get coffee for her boss. Kara has all the same powers SUPERMAN has, but she chose to live a normal, ordinary life because the world doesn't need another hero.

It is now nighttime, and Kara is on a blind date. She sees a Breaking News report that the plane her sister is on has experienced engine failure. She rushes out the back, uses her telescopic and x-ray vision, and sees her sister inside the falling plane. She runs down the back alley to get a running start, and she flies into the sky, toward the plane.

Supergirl As she attempts the steer the plane to a safe landing, we get a great hi-octane action scene as passengers are screaming, debris is falling from the sky, and Kara struggles to keep the plane from crashing. That scene had me at the edge of my seat wondering if they were going to make it down in one piece. Luckily they do, and Kara stands on the wing of the plane for a brief moment before she flies away.

The S-shield gets shown on the screen, and everyone in the audience starts cheering.

In less than 15 minutes, we got an origin story, a good set-up for the type of person Kara is, and a great action scene where Kara used her powers to save a plane.

I won't go into huge detail as to what happens next, I don't want to spoil the whole story for anyone. Suffice it to say that we'll see the aftermath of her actions: The way it affects her job, her relationship with her sister, and the people close to her. We'll see her try out different outfits before she settles on her final one. We'll see a super-powered villain try to kill her. Kara will receive a message from Krypton at a point when all hope seems lost. The show also sets up future storylines for the rest of the season.

I really enjoyed watching the Pilot. There was humor, there was drama, and a good mix of action and touching scenes as well. It was very well written. The acting was great. And it has a very nice epilogue that sets up the rest of the season. I am very excited to see what happens next. I strongly recommend you watch the SUPERGIRL Pilot when it airs on October 26, on CBS.
