April 23, 2013: "Man of Steel" Interviews from Empire Magazine

Empire has posted extracts from the June 2013 edition of their magazine, which features two different "Man of Steel" covers.

In one online article director Zack Snyder talks about how the movie deals with the town of Smallville and what happens when unwanted Kryptonian outsiders come to visit.

"It's a Western face-off," says Snyder. "[Zod and Faora and the rest of the Kryptonian invasion] care very little for Smallville's iconographic status. We're being really hard on the town: this battle needed to be dangerous."

A few more details: the shoot took nine days to complete, it's the first major conflict in the movie and the town of Plano, Illinois, plays Smallville, Kansas. The mayor even gets a cameo. Look out for a particularly oh-my-god-I-can't-believe-this-is-happening bank teller.

Snyder also spoke to Empire about what might come next after "Man of Steel"...

Talking to Snyder during post-production, he's keen to not say anything definitive - and certainly won't be drawn into anything to do with the Justice League - but there was one interesting titbit we thought we'd share with you online to whet your appetite.

"We didn't design the movie like Batman [i.e. as a trilogy] but I don't think anybody would say you design a Superman movie as a one-off."

While in yet another article, Michael Shannon is asked to compare his version of General Zod to that portrayed in previous films by Terence Stamp...

"Nothing we do in this film will make people forget Terence Stamp," Shannon explains in this month's Man of Steel issue of Empire. "but that wasn't really what we were going for. As much as I love what Terence Stamp did in that movie, it was kind of opaque.

"It was impossible to have any empathy with him," he adds. "It was pure malice. We wanted to break down that wall a little bit, so the audience might think, 'Yeah, I know what he's going through.' It's not better or worse, it's just different."

The June 2013 edition Empire magazine will be available Thursday, April 24. Visit EmpireOnline.com to order your copy.
