May 25, 2003: Bob Holiday to Perform at Superman Festival
BOB HOLIDAY FLIES TO METROPOLIS TO PERFORM AT 25TH ANNUAL SUPERMAN CELEBRATION!Broadway musical star Bob Holiday has announced plans to perform at the 25th Annual Superman Celebration, in Metropolis IL, on June 13th. Holiday, star of such shows as "Camelot," "Promises Promises," and "Fiorello," was the first and only actor ever to portray the Man of Steel on the Broadway stage, in the 1966 musical "It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman." Featuring music by Charles Strouse (composer of "Annie") and written by David Newman and Robert Benton ("Superman: The Movie" and "Superman II"), "It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman" was hailed by The New York Times' critic as "easily the best musical this season."
"Having played Superman was a special and lasting honor for me," recalls Holiday, today a leading home builder in the Poconos Lake Wallenpaupack Resort Area of Pennsylvania. "People still remember this show and tell me how much they enjoyed it. It's deeply rewarding because I have always been a Superman fan. I remember his debut in Action Comics, I enjoyed the radio series and the Kirk Alyn serials, and I was a George Reeves fan. It was a thrill when I got the part on Broadway and had the honor to work with the brilliant producer/director Hal Prince ('Cabaret,' 'Evita,') and the charismatic star Jack Cassidy (father of actor Patrick Cassidy on 'Smallville'). Superman is a positive and indelible part of American popular culture."
Bob Holiday will perform several songs from his popular nightclub act, reminisce about his experiences flying and singing on the Broadway stage as Superman, and do a super-special number from the musical. In addition, he'll sign copies of his new book, "Superman on Broadway," which will be available at the Celebration, as well as other unique souvenir items, including special CD's and the original cast album.
Each second full weekend in June, the City of Metropolis IL, the "Home of Superman," celebrates their Favorite Son with the Annual Superman Celebration. This year's special 25th annual event takes place from Thursday, June 12 to Sunday June 15, and will also feature Noel Neill (Lois Lane in the Superman movie serials and television series and Lois' mother in "Superman the Movie"), Yvonne Craig ("Batgirl from the classic Sixties series), and DC Comics artist Steve Rude. Special events will include the Eighth Annual Super Museum Auction, the George Awards Dinner, carnival rides, street theater and vendors, games of skill, bike races, auto shows, musical entertainment, costume contests, Superman Film Festivals, and the Superman Playhouse Theater, where Bob Holiday will perform on the evening of Friday, June 13.
Metropolis is the only town in America so named, and in 1972 the Illinois Legislature proclaimed it to be the "Home of Superman." It is the site of the world-famous Superman Museum, founded by Jim Hambrick, renowned Superman collector, historian, and archivist. The Museum features thousands of rare items, including original costumes, props, photos, and memorabilia from Superman's 65-year career.
