Our Story:
Sixteen years after the meteor shower that bought Clark to Earth, a second one has now devastated Smallville once again. This time it's bought a second ship, a black ominous looking one that rests in a crater that Lana stands on the edge of. Meanwhile Clark has reunited the three Kryptonian elements into one and created a stone that's transported him, and unknowingly Chloe also, to the North Pole. There, Clark throws the stone in the direction it points and from the spot it lands in suddenly soar 40 foot tall geometric columns that interlock to create a massive otherworldly building that Clark enters. The voice of his biological father Jor-El greets him and he tells him that one journey in his life has ended, and a whole new one has begun!
Back at the crater the ship lies in, Lana sees a bright light as it opens and suddenly there stand two beings, a man and a women. Then police and military choppers and cars merge on the spot and draw their weapons. The man and women respond to this by using heat vision just like Clarks to blow up the vehicles and decimate their ranks. The pair notice Lana has run off but the man states that all that matters is they find Kal-El. Lois arrives at the Kent farmhouse to find it destroyed by a meteor. She helps Jonathan Kent dig an injured Martha Kent out of the wreckage and they take her to Smallville Medical Center. In the Kawatche caves, Lex awakens to find himself alone with only Chloe's cell phone on the ground to prove she was ever there. He enters the inner chamber and finds the console inside and takes Clark's spaceship key from it.
Suddenly the man and women super-speed up to him asking if he is Kal-El. When he hesitates, the man lifts him by the neck until his fingers dig so deeply that Lex's neck starts to bleed. Stating that Kal-El could not bleed, the two take the spaceship key from Lex and speed from the cave. Jor-El explains to Clark that this is his Fortress of Solitude, and though he wants to return home and help, Jor-El informs him that a dark force from Krypton had set its sights on Earth and the only way for Clark to stop it is to stay and study the knowledge Jor-El has for Clark. A holographic column surrounds Clark and he watches as thousands of images pass in front of him. But Chloe has inadvertently been transported to the top of the world also, and though she had reached the fortress, she collapses inside as the artic temperatures begin to kill her!
Clark sees Chloe and wants to save her but Jor-El warns him that interrupting his training is endangering the entire planet. Jor-El tells Clark he can leave, but if he doesn't return by sunset the consequences will be grave. Chloe tells Clark she knows about his super-speed and to please get her out of there and Clark speeds away with Chloe in his arms. Lex is returning to the mansion when he spots a fleeing Lana who is hysterical over seeing the two aliens attacking the police and military. She tells Lex she saw them come out of a spaceship in a field and Lex tells her she's in shock and imagining things. Then Lana collapses and Lex takes her to his home. Clark has taken Chloe to a far north Alaskan hospital and she tells him she knows about his powers and she considers him a super-hero for all the lives he's saved. Clark then admits that he was born on another planet and Chloe is shocked to discover he's an alien, but promises to keep his secrets.
Then they see the news about the meteor shower has made the television stations and in the footage Clark sees his destroyed home and with Chloe's blessings he runs off to help. Lana awakens in the mansion to find Lex's father scratching kryptonian symbols in the floor and ranting that the disciples of Zod have arrived and that only pieces of their home world can stop them. She realizes he means the green glowing meteor rocks in the vault that Clark ripped the door off of last season. Jonathan Kent and Lois visit Martha Kent who has finally awakened in the hospital. Then all hell breaks loose as the two kryptonians arrive and confront Jonathan Kent demanding to know where Kal-El is. The man lifts Jonathan and Lois from their feet and then throws them down like rag dolls. Suddenly Lana arrives and tells them that Kal-El is at the Luthor mansion and takes them there.
Clark arrives at his house and Lex shows up and confronts Clark telling him to stop lying to him and admit he was in the caves and that he disappeared in a bright white column of light. Clark insists he wasn't there and leaves a skeptical Lex in his wake. Clark finds Lois at the hospital and tells him the two aliens wreaked havoc there looking for someone named Kal-El and Clark speeds away. Lana leads the two to the vault in Lex's house and almost traps them with the meteor rocks in the vault but the man blocks the radiation by ramming the vault door back into place and tossing Lana across the room. Clark arrives and the two ask Clark to join them and create utopia on Earth. Clark tells them their actions have proven that's not their real intentions and he'll never join them. The man states they cannot destroy him but they can put him where he cannot prevent them from doing what they want either. The woman removes a bracelet with kryptonian symbols and throws it at Clark who dodges it but it lands behind him and opens a hole into a black vortex which starts to drag Clark inside.
Clark barely hangs onto the floor as he's slowly dragged inside and the pair of aliens turns their backs on him. But Clark's resolve is strong and he drags himself out of the vortex and manages to throw the pair inside instead of him. The vortex disappears and turns into a flat plate with the alien pair screaming inside it. Then it smashes out of a window and flies off into space. Clark goes to Lana and sees the sun setting outside the smashed window and knows he won't make it back to the fortress in time and instead he must take Lana to the hospital. But as he does he notices he's bleeding from a small cut and he realizes he's lost his powers! He also spots his spaceship's key on the ground where it was dropped and he retrieves it. Clark reunites with Martha and Jonathan at their destroyed house and he tells them that Jor-El must be finished with him as he has taken away his powers and now he just wants to try and live a normal human life.
Lex goes to the hospital in the Yukon to take Chloe home and is again skeptical when she lies for Clark. Lana is recovering from her injuries and reading in the paper that Jason Teague and his mother were killed in the meteor shower when Clark visits her and they both admit they meant it when they said they loved each other and the two embrace. Lana tells Clark about the aliens and the ship they landed in and Clark goes to the crater to find it empty. Then the picture fades to a corridor in Luthorcorp and we see inside a guarded hanger that Lex has taken custody of the alien ship. And from the ship drips a dark black liquid that oozes across the floor and starts to rise from the ground in kryptonian crystal form and then finally forms into the shape of a man. It seems that the menace from Krypton that threatens the Earth as Jor-El warned has arrived on our planet!

Our Story:
Lex has had his father moved to Belle Reve Sanitarium after Lionel went into a state of shock after touching one of the kryptonian stones of power. He's bribed a Doctor to have other inmates moved away from his father so no one will learn about the elder Luthor's condition. As Lex leaves, he bumps into one of the prisoners that's being moved and mysteriously the man's handcuffs come undone. Then the man reaches out to a light fixture and draws electricity from it to stun his guards. He then frees a pair of twin prisoners and they join hands and somehow erect a force field that prevents other guards from reaching them. The man blasts open an outer wall and when the twins ask him where they're going now, the man replies, "Smallville!"
The Kents are helping out at a local barnraising for neighbors who lost theirs in the recent meteor shower. During a break, Chloe teases Clark about how things are harder for him now that he's lost his powers but Clark assures her he doesn't want it any other way. When Martha asks Clark to go back to their barn for more nails, Lana goes with Clark. Just then Lex pulls up and Clark tells him that Lana and others are having a hard time trusting Lex right now and he tells Clark he hopes it can be a fresh start between all of them and Clark agrees. Lana and Clark head to their barn and find the nails but then the pair run up into the loft and Clark and Lana start to kiss. Then each confesses to the other that they are both virgins and they start to take their clothes off when Clark hears someone downstairs in the barn. He puts his shirt back on and runs to the railing to see the trio of escapees from Belle Reve. The twins immediately pin Clark to the ceiling with their force field powers and the man tells Clark they've come there looking for him!
They force Clark and Lana into what's left of the Kents home after it was struck by meteors and Clark tries to tell them they've got the wrong person but the man insists that Clark is a legend in Belle Reve. Clark tries to stop them but the man uses his powers to draw electricity to zap Clark away from him and then he threatens to kill them both if he isn't the one they're looking for. Back in the Kawatche caves Chloe is inspecting the stone console that Clark operated to send he and Chloe to the North Pole where his Fortress of Solitude was created. Lex comes in and startles Chloe and she drops her flash light which Lex picks up and hands back to her. He tells Chloe she's lying about him seeing them both disappear in a white flash and she accuses Lex of stealing the alien ship that Lana swears she saw. They both promise to keep an eye on each other and Chloe leaves. At the Kent home the man tells Clark he and the twins were experimented on in the mysterious "level three" of Luthorcorp, and given kryptonite injections to increase the abilities they already had.
Then one day they were taken to Belle Reve and now they want Clark to use the powers they heard about in the stories many of the inmates there tell to break into level three to get them more serum which they're now addicted to. Just then Martha and Jonathan pull up looking for Clark and Lana and the trio use their powers to capture them too. The man tells Clark he has two hours to return with the serum or he will kill all his captives! Clark contacts Chloe and they head to Luthorcorp and park in a field outside. Chloe uses her laptop to pinpoint where in the building level three must be and they sneak to a doorway just after the guards have passed by. Clark remarks how once he would have just torn the door down but Chloe tells him they'll have to do things her way now. She uses her computer to shut the doors power off and they enter the building. Back at the Kent farm the Sheriff pulls up and the man tells Jonathan Kent to get rid of her. Meanwhile Clark crawls through air ducts with Chloe talking to him through headset walkie-talkies to guide him to level three.
But Clark sets off an alarm and must hurry to stay ahead of the gates that are shutting off portions of the duct system. The Sheriff suspects something's going on when she sees cigarette butts in the Kent home and she leaves but calls for back up when the man comes out of the house and zaps her. Lana tries to fight off the twins and even shoots one through the hand with a nail gun but they subdue her and erect a force field around the Kent home just as more officers arrive. Clark breaks into section three with seconds to spare and then lets Chloe inside and they head to the vault containing the serum. But Chloe cannot open its door unless they have Lex's thumbprint, and she suddenly remembers that Lex picked up her flashlight that day and his thumbprint is on it! Back at the farm, the twins find their powers are running out and the man insists they keep the field up. He calls Clark who lies and tells him he's on the way with the serum.
When Chloe gets the thumbprint to open the vault door Clark walks inside but a laser protection grid cuts him and the pair is stymied as to how they'll get inside the vault for the serum. Clark tells Chloe to try tracing the power signal that controls the lasers and in the meantime he's going to try and use a bluff to free his parents and Lana. He drives back to the farmhouse with a briefcase and convinces the Sheriff that he can get the captives to safety and she decides to trust Clark. He enters the house when the twins momentarily drop the field and the man eagerly opens the case. But instead of serum it contains a flash grenade the police use and it stuns the man for a moment. He fires at Clark with his power and Clark dives below the bolt which strikes the twins instead knocking them out. Then Clark takes a sledgehammer and smashes the fuse box killing all electrical power to the house negating the man's abilities!
Clark then walks up to him and with a strong right cross punch knocks him cold ending his threat. The police take the trio back to Belle Reve and Chloe comes in and tells Clark she found a carrier signal in the current that means someone was watching them the whole time. Clark goes to Lex's mansion and knocks him down telling him he now knows that Lex endangered them all just so he could test Clark and try to prove he has strange abilities. Then Lex punches Clark back and when he sees him bleeding from the punch Clark asks if he's finally convinced and then leaves with the pair's friendship at an apparent end. Clark goes to see Lana and she cleans up his wounds and Clark tells her he now understands that being human means you never know what tomorrow will bring. The pair embraces and then kisses each other and they sink to floor and as the scene fades, we know that after all this time their relationship is being consummated completely.

"Hidden"

Written By: Brian Peterson & Kelly Souders
Directed By: Whitney Ransick
Produced By: Bob Hargrove
Aired in the U.S.A.: 10/13/05

Roles & Actors this episode:
Co-Starring: Gabriel Duncan: Johnny Lewis
Co-Starring: Sheriff Adams: Camille Mitchell
Clark Kent: Tom Welling
Jonathan Kent: John Schneider
Martha Kent: Annette O'Toole
Lana Lang: Kristen Kreuk
Lex Luthor: Michael Rosenbaum
Lionel Luthor: John Glover

Our Story:
A young man stands in a military complex room holding two men in uniform at gunpoint. He demands the second soldier use his key, which is the twin to one he's already taken from the first soldier, to unlock a mechanism. He tells the soldier that unless he does so he will kill the first soldier so the man gives in and they both turn the keys at the same time. Then the young man apologizes and shoots both men anyway! He then calls Chloe who knows him as Gabriel and tells her that in one hour Smallville will cease to exist and she has to get out of town. He also tells her she's the only one who'll understand why he did what he's about to do and hangs up. Then he turns to a laptop keyboard and enters an access code and we see a metal door covering the window slide up and a missile warming up and a speaker announces a countdown of 60 minutes until launchtime!
Next we see the Kent household and Clark's alarm going off and waking him, and he turns over and there in bed with him is Lana. They both panic when they realize they've slept in and may be discovered by Clark's parents. They get dressed and sneak downstairs, but Martha and Jonathan Kent are already awake and Lana makes an embarrassing exit. Jonathan Kent tells Clark this can never happen again under their roof and Martha reminds Clark he's lost his powers and is just as open to harm as any human being. Then Chloe drops in and tells Clark about the call she got from Gabriel Duncan. Jonathan goes to find the Sheriff and tells Clark and Chloe to try and track down Gabriel. When Jonathan finds the Sheriff she's already working with military personnel who are preparing to enter a local missile silo. They sneak in and raid the place to find it's empty and a solider tells the Sheriff there are dozens more in the area and they'll have to try and find the right one quickly. That's no idle statement as we see Gabriel has just reset the missile's coordinates to strike Smallville!
Clark and Chloe visit the Duncan household and discover that Gabriel's father was an active Air Force Colonel in charge of the missile silos in the area. They also find a room plastered with newspaper articles about all the strange events and people connected to the meteor showers that bought Clark to Earth. They think that Gabriel's father should have seen this as a danger signal and tried to stop him but then they find the Colonel shot to death in the next room! Back at Lexcorp Lex is busy dressing down a technician who tells Lex he and his fellow scientists can find no way into the spaceship that Lex took to his factory after the latest meteor shower. Then Lex and the scientist notice strange symbols on the craft's bottom that were not there before.
Clark and Chloe can't figure how to find the one particular silo that Gabriel is in until Chloe decides to call Gabriel telling him her car has run off into a ditch and he must come and save her as she couldn't escape Smallville after all. Lex visits his father who has been locked up in Belle Reve Sanitarium and demands to know what all the strange symbols he's been drawing in his cell mean. He tells Lionel that the symbols are similar to what he's found on the ship and the only words the elder Luthor will say are, "You'll never open it. Only he can open it." Gabriel pulls up on his motorcycle to where Chloe has told him she's waiting. When he does Clark appears and tries to convince him that what he's doing is wrong. Gabriels response to this is to pull a gun and shoot Clark in the chest. He then forces Chloe onto his motorcycle and drives away leaving Clark lying in the road mortally wounded!
Clark is soon found and rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery as the bullet has pierced his lung and all Martha and Jonathan Kent can do is wait and pray he recovers. Back in the silo Gabriel ties Chloe in a chair and tells her his father was the one who kept the room plastered with meteor articles. And after the last meteor shower Colonel Duncan had become infected and was starting to mutate from the radiation and had asked Gabriel to kill him. Gabriel thinks he's going to save all the people who'll now be infected by the meteor radiation as there's now ten times more of it in Smallville. Lana visits Clark after his surgery and tells him she always feared he'd get himself killed by trying to save someone and now her greatest fear becomes true when suddenly Clark's heart stops beating. A medical crew rushes in and tries to rescusitate Clark but it's too late, he's died from his injuries!
Everytime the medical team tried shocking Clark's heart back into beating, Lionel Luthor reacted strangely in his cell in Belle Reve. When Clark's officially pronounced dead, Lionel walks over to the thick glass in the front of his cell and smashes throught it effortlessly. Then inexplicably he super-speeds down the hallway and out of sight. Back at the hospital the Kents are told Clark had just died when another nurse tells them all something strange has happened. They all rush to Clark's room to find he has mysteriously disappeared! Back in the silo Chloe breaks free of her bonds long enough to hit Gabriel with a guard's baton and stun him. She then tries to stop the missile launch but it's futile and Jason awakens and comes at her with his gun. Chloe and Jason struggle with the gun until Jason is shot and tumbles to the ground just as the missile launches on it's path of destruction!
Clark awakens in the Fortress of Solitude bathed in strange lighting and seemingly unharmed and he looks around and is shocked to see none other then Lionel Luthor standing there. Luthor calls Clark Kal-El and explains that he's now Jor-El who, due to Lionel's exposure to the Kryptonian crystal he once possessed, is using him for a vessel to use in case Clark ever needs him. When Clark died he possessed Lionel and raced him to the Kawatche caves and transported them to the Fortress and saved Clark. But in nature a balance must be restored and someone close to Clark will have to die to restore that balance now that Clark's alive and once again has his powers. Jor-El tells Clark that he will soon face his darkest hour but Jor-El also tells him he will always love him. As he embraces him it seems as though a red energy of some sort passes from Jor-El to Clark, then the scene turns blindingly bright.
The next we see of Clark is he is racing down a Kansas road and Clark sees the missile just taking off from the silo. He runs to the launch sight and in a great single bound he leaps up onto the missile's side and digging handholds in it he scales to it's top as the missile reaches the edge of space. He tears open a panel at the top and pulling out the warhead he tosses it far into space where it detonates harmlessly. Then the top section of the missile and Clark tumble far back to Earth. The Kents have just gotten home when they are shocked and delighted to see Clark standing in their hallway. They are elated to see Clark alive and he tells them he's no longer mortal once again and Jonathan asks what Jor-El wanted in exchange for that but Clark says nothing and doesn't mention the death of someone he loves that Jor-El stated will occur.
Lana comes in also and when she sees Clark alive she runs to his arms and they stand there embracing in the hallway. Later, back at his mansion Lex is confronted by Lana and they discuss Clark's miraculous resurrection. She shows Lex Clark's medical file from the hospital that she knows Lex asked for. She tells him that everything in Clark's tests shows he's completely normal and he should stop his obsession of investigating Clark. He tells Lana that anyone who rises from the dead isn't normal and Lana storms out. Then in strolls Lex's father now completely coherent although he has no memory about the things he said or the many symbols he drew for the last few weeks. Chloe visits Clark in his barn loft and she tells him to confide in Lana about his special powers but knowing what he now knows about someone close to him dying, Clark refuses to risk telling Lana anything. His powers are back, but so is the wall between Clark and the rest of the human race that he feels will always keep him from finding happiness.

Directed By: Bradford May
Produced By: Bob Hargrove
Aired in the U.S.A.: 10/20/05

Roles & Actors this episode:
Co-Starring: Arthur Curry: Alan Ritchson
Professor Milton Fine: James Marsters
Clark Kent: Tom Welling
Lois Lane: Erica Durance
Lana Lang: Kristen Kreuk
Lex Luthor: Michael Rosenbaum
Chloe Sullivan: Allison Mack

Our Story:
Clark, Lana, and Chloe are up at Crater Lake when who shows up but Lois and she tells Clark his mother has offered to let her stay at the Kent house again and she's decided to do so. Lois swims out to the diving platform in the lake and tries a back flip off of it but strikes her head on the platform as she enters the water and is knocked out. Clark runs in and swims underwater so no one will see him using his super speed but suddenly another young man rockets by him and grabs Lois even faster then Clark could have. He takes her ashore and revives her and introduces himself as Arthur Curry and Lois is immediately attracted to her rescuer but Clark is suspicious of the young man's amazing speed.
Clark is late for his first class in history at Central Kansas A&M, and we're surprised to see that his Professor is the person who came from the ship that crashed during the latest meteor shower. He calls himself Professor Milton Fine and he chides Clark for being late. Then he starts by talking about how Lex Luthor started out in the agriculture business and now has moved onto making weapons and he also accuses Lex of being dangerous to humanity! Clark, although his and Lex's friendship has become estranged, defends Lex despite that. After class the Professor tells Clark he's writing a book exposing Luthorcorp and he would like to hire Clark as his research assistant, but Clark turns him down.
Arthur has visited Lois while she's working at the Talon Coffeehouse and asked her out on a date at Crater Lake. They bicker back and forth but it's obvious they're both attracted to each other. Lois challenges Arthur to a swim race and he gives her a head start and then swims past her underwater like a torpedo and is waiting for her on the dock to Lois' surprise. They talk a bit and just as Arthur is about to kiss Lois he screams in pain asking Lois if she can hear what's hurting him but Lois can't. He dives into the water and swims underneath the surface to a giant machine embedded in the Lake that's emitting a high pitched frequency that's hurting him so badly he swims back to the beach and collapses on it bleeding from his ears. And as Lois tries to help him we see dozens of fish floating on the lake surface that've been killed by the machine.
Back at Luthor mansion we see Lex and a technician looking at blueprints of the machine in the lake and they're referring to it as "Leviathan". She tells Lex the trial went fine and Lex remarks that he's got Pentagon associates about to visit and they'll want the device on every ship in the fleet. When the doctor warns Lex about it being dangerous to sea life, he tells her there are plenty of fish in the sea and killing a few won't be noticed. Then he orders her to have the machine returned to the lab for tomorrow's demonstration and leaves. Back at the Kent farmhouse Lois is checking that Arthur has recovered from what happened and he's drinking glass after glass of water and recovering just fine. Then Arthur kisses her and though she protests at first she then kisses him back and who comes in and interrupts them but Clark.
Clark has Chloe investigate Arthur and she finds that he's a sophomore at the University of Miami and the star of the swim team. She also finds that he once was arrested for freeing some dolphins from an aquarium and returning them to the ocean. Later at the Talon, Clark confronts Arthur in front of Lois and Lana about his past and he tells them he was born to a father who ran a lighthouse down south and his mother died when he was a baby, and he's spent most of his life in and around the ocean. He says he's come to Smallville to investigate the sudden rash of fish kills at Crater Lake and Clark accuses him of just trying to pick up girls. Lois takes Clark aside and tells him she can take care of herself and Arthur leaves. Clark follows Arthur to a pipe near Crater Lake that leads to the lab where Lex is keeping Leviathan and he sees Arthur set a bomb to blow the lab up which Clark grabs and smothers in his chest which surprises Arthur when Clark is unhurt.
Arthur swims out into the lake and Clark super speed swims up to him and they face off underwater. Arthur swirls his hand and creates a ball of compressed water which knocks Clark back but Clark swims at Arthur and rams him hard. Arthur surprises Clark by standing up to his strength and then he hits Clark with another compressed ball of water that knocks Clark right out of the water and all the way onto the beach! Later, Arthur meets Clark in his barn and tells him that what he read in the lab told him that Leviathan is a weapon that uses a high power sonic beam to slice enemy ships in two but is deadly to sea life. He wants to try to destroy it but Clark talks him into coming with him to ask Lex to stop using the machine. They visit Lex who denies anything about the machine being under development. They argue to no avail and Lex tells Clark to believe him which Clark says isn't going to happen anymore.
Arthur returns to Crater Lake but before he can dive in he's hit with a tranquilizer dart which knocks him out. He awakens in the Leviathan lab and the Doctor is taking a blood sample from him. Also he's gasping and begging for water which Lex refuses to give him. Lex questions Arthur further but Lex gets nowhere while telling Arthur he wants to know how he can breathe underwater and how he gets so strong from water. Then the Pentagon officials arrive for the test and Lex leaves Arthur gasping for breath in the lab. Clark then speeds into the room and turns on a valve which douses Arthur with water after which his strength returns and he breaks free. As Lex warms up the weapon for the test, Clark speeds Arthur out of the lab and he swims to the machine before it can start and smashes it making the potential buyers think it's defective and they leave. All the video underwater shows is a flash of Arthur by the machine and then a destroyed machine.
Clark visits Lex and tells him how he defended him to his Professor and he asks Lex to try and change his ways but Lex won't listen to him. Arthur tells Clark he's leaving now that the threat to the ocean has ended. Then Clark goes to see the Professor and asks for the assistant job that'll look into Luthorcorp and he gets the job. Arthur and Lois meet at the lake and he tells her he's leaving and Lois is upset as she has begun to really like him. He tells her he won't be back to Smallville and they kiss goodbye. Later, a dejected Lois visits Clark in his barn loft and Clark can see that she's upset over Arthur leaving and Clark promises her that someday she will meet someone even more special to her. What Lois doesn't know yet is that she already has, and he's standing right next to her.

After the episode ends, there is a promo for www.christopherreeve.org which is selling $10.00 tags with a Superman "S" on them to help fight paralysis. Or call 1-800-225-0292. I'd also like to mention that the season opener, "Arrival" was dedicated to Superman writer Jeph Loeb's 17 year old son who just passed away from cancer. I sincerely apologize for omitting that fact when the show first aired.

Our Story:
Chloe is interviewing for an internship in the Daily Planet with the editor Pauline Khan and it's not going well. Miss Khan is unimpressed that Chloe had a column in the paper a couple of years ago due to Lionel Luthor putting pressure on the owner and feels that since she's just out of high school the Planet doesn't need her at all. But Chloe insists she's willing to work her way into the business from the bottom up and Khan tells her if she wants the job, to bring her a story. At the Tri-Psi Sorority on Metropolis University a pizza delivery boy is delighted to make his delivery when a bevy of bikini clad girls open the door and insist he join them in the hot tub. He does so but soon tells them he has to leave for more deliveries when suddenly the girls all sprout fangs and attack him turning the hot pool waters bloody with their feast of the hapless young man!
Clark drops in on Lana to find out she's packing to leave to attend Metropolis University having been accepted at the last minute. Clark is upset and tries to talk her into attending Central Kansas A&M where he attends but she tells him they don't carry classes she's interested in. Clark is upset that this will cause a rift in their relationship but Lana reassures him nothing between them will change. When Lana pledges to Tri-Psi she finds that the girls there are completely egotistical considering themselves the best of the best and their leader is Buffy Sanders who assures the pledges that whomever makes it into the sorority will change their life forever.
Clark is in his history class with Professor Fine comparing the final decadent days of Rome to Luthorcorp and the work it's doing in the modern age when who enters the classroom but Lex Luthor himself! After class ends Lex questions if Clark is helping the Professor obtain information on projects he's running that there aren't public access to. The Professor wonders why Lex is so interested in a Kansas farm boy and then tells Lex he's lecturing on buying influence in the second semester. Lex tells him he donates a considerable amount of money to the university and he can make sure that the Professor won't be teaching there by that time if he doesn't back off. Back at Tri-Psi, Lana has just found out she's the only pledge that's being accepted but she has to be initiated first. The girls all sprout fangs and grab Lana while Buffy cuts her own tongue with her fingernail to expose a drop of her blood. Then she kisses Lana which transforms Lana into one of the sisters of her now fellow vampires!
Professor Fine drops in on Lex at his mansion to give him a file with all the details of his personal life so Lex can verify who he is. He also shows Lex information he's obtained that proves that Luthorcorp is using university funding in experiments they're running on the campus without the Dean's knowledge. He tells Lex to never start a game with him that he can't win and then he leaves, after which Lex instructs one of his security men to follow the Professor. Clark goes looking for Lana after she doesn't answer any of his phone messages and he finds her in Chloe's dorm room trying to stay out of the sunlight and acting very aggressively towards Clark. When he tells her to slow down with her advances she scoffs that he's needy and insecure and their relationship might need reevaluation. Lex's security man follows the Professor who somehow gains access to the room where the spaceship from the latest meteor shower is being kept in a Luthorcorp lab. The security man draws a gun on the Professor and tells him he shouldn't touch things that don't belong to him. The Professor's response is that the ship is his and then one of his fingers turns into a black six foot long spike that pierces the security man through the chest killing him!
Back at the sorority house the girls are downing shots and partying hard and when Lana asks what else they do for fun, Buffy slaps her with maniacal strength throwing her down to the first floor breaking her neck. But a few seconds later, Lana arises and simply cracks her neck back into place while Buffy tells her she's now an immortal just like them! Chloe does some research and tells Clark that years ago Buffy took over as the sorority's new president and since then it's the most exclusive sorority on campus and they only accept one pledge a year and all members are members for life. The pair decides the only way to find out more is to attend the sorority's Halloween party and while Clark protests he hates costumes, he dresses up as Zorro and they bluff their way into the bash. Chloe sees Lana getting crazy with a strange boy and to distract Clark she sends him upstairs to search for clues. He finds an old newspaper article in Buffy's belongings that tells how she was attacked in a cave of vampire bats years ago and somehow survived.
Buffy comes into the room and starts to question Clark when she's distracted long enough for Clark to super-speed out of the room. Chloe confronts Lana for being unfaithful to Clark and Lana's response is to attack Chloe and bite her neck! Clark hears Chloe calling him for help with his super-hearing and speeds to her pushing Lana away. Lana turns into mist and swirls out the window leaving a wounded Chloe in Clark's arms. He takes her to the hospital where she's given a blood transfusion but it's not helping and the doctor tells Clark it's a strange form of rabies that's attacking Chloe's blood. Just then Professor Fine stops in claiming he was visiting a colleague in the hospital. He tells Clark to ask Lex about Luthorcorp's experiment number 1138 which he read about in the research for his book and he might gain some answers.
Back at the sorority Buffy is furious for Lana at feeding on a victim and not killing them, and she tells Lana she must bring Clark back to the house so they can all feed on him. Clark confronts Lex about project 1138 and Lex tells him that meteor rocks had affected the Vampire bats in the cave where Buffy was attacked. Luthorcorp came up with an antidote for the rabies but when he opens a case of it a piece of meteor rock, Kryptonite, which is used to keep the serum active weakens him. Just then Lana breaks into the room and knocks Lex out and bites Clark on the neck. She suddenly obtains heat vision and using it to destroy a mirror in the room she realizes Clark is something very special. She brings him back to the sorority house and Buffy and the girls get ready to feed when Lana refuses and uses her heat vision to vaporize Buffy! That makes the other vampire girls run off and Lana prepares to finish Clark off when he uses a needle of the serum he hid on himself to stab her causing her to scream in pain and black out.
The rest of the girls are rounded up and given the serum and cured of their peculiar form of rabies that mimicked vampirism. Lana becomes Chloe's new roommate due to Chloe's old one being too weirded out by Chloe's "Wall of the Weird" and she tells Clark she has no memory of what happened, only that when she bit him she felt warmth, love, and great strength inside him. Clark goes to see Lex and thank him for his help and Lex warns Clark that Professor Fine is getting highly secretive information somehow and he warns Clark to be careful of the Professor. Chloe takes her story to Pauline Khan who dismisses it as tabloid garbage but tells her she has some talent and gives her an internship job in the basement of the Daily Planet which delights Chloe. She figures the only direction from the basement for her is "Up, up, and away!"

Our Story:
Lois is visiting her cousin Chloe at the Daily Planet late one night when Chloe is working the information line. She asks Chloe to help her move out of the Kents and into Lana's old apartment over the Talon coffee shop and Chloe agrees. Suddenly a call comes in from a frantic young woman asking for a reporter to come to a certain intersection in Metropolis and quickly as she is in danger. Chloe decides to follow up the call as this could be the story that gets her into the paper with her own by-line. They race to the spot and see the young woman across the street. But as the girl runs to meet them, an SUV races out of an alleyway and purposely runs the hapless young woman over killing her!
Clark is home from school helping Jonathan Kent when an old model Dodge Charger races up to them and slides sideways to a halt inches away from the pair. Out from the car jumps Jonathan Kent's old friend and Clark's honorary uncle, Senator Jack Jennings. He explains to Jonathan Kent that he's come to seek Pa's help in making sure he gets the Farmers Union votes as he's just found out his new opponent in the race for Senator is Lex Luthor! In Metropolis Detective Maggie Sawyer is telling Lois and Chloe they have no clues in the hit and run and Chloe traces the phone call to a phone booth near a place called the Windgate Club. The Detective goes to see Senator Jennings at the Kents as she has found a picture of the dead girl sitting in the Senators lap but he denies any knowledge of the young woman.
Jonathan suggests that Lex had the picture faked to ruin the Senator's chances in the election so Clark goes to confront him about it. Lex denies having the picture made but tells Clark he recognizes that the picture was taken at the Windgate Club, an exclusive gentlemen's club in Metropolis. He gives Clark his private pass to the club but cautions Clark that's its dangerous and to be careful. Chloe and Lois go to the club but can't get past the front door so when they see a couple of girls going in another door they follow them in and discover it's a strip club. They sneak into the owner's office to check his records but are caught by the manager who mistakes Lois for a replacement dancer he's expecting and Lois goes along with the ruse. Lex visits Jonathan and tells him he had nothing to do with the Senators' problems but he's found out that the Senator had been calling the dead girl frequently.
Chloe tries to question the dancers while Lois prepares to dance but no one will talk to her about the murder. Clark gets into the club with Lex's pass and when he's asked if he'll be meeting Lex he says he's meeting the Senator and to his surprise he's taken to the Senator's regular booth! Then he gets another shock when the next dancer on stage turns out to be Lois. She's nervous but she manages to pull of her first dance without blowing it and she sees Clark and heads over and sits on his lap to maintain her deception. Then everything goes wrong as the Police raid the joint and announce everyone's under arrest. But one customer with an accent grabs Lois and takes her out a back door and they escape the raid. Clark uses his super-hearing to listen in while the bouncer tells Detective Sawyer that the Senator had nothing to do with the murdered girl.
Chloe is waiting with girls that got caught in the raid and they confide in her that the foreign man has been taking girls from the club for months and they're never seen again. Then Chloe and Clark get released from custody as Lex has made a phone call and arranged for it. Jonathan Kent takes the senator for a ride in the Charger and questions him about just what's going on with him and the dead girl. The Senator admits he was having an affair with the young girl and he couldn't tell anyone as it would ruin his career. The strange man takes Lois to a posh apartment and gives her something to wear from a closet filled with several of the same red dresses in different sizes. She spots a picture of the dead girl in the closet and then the man takes pictures of Lois in the dress too. He tells Lois he's taking her out of the country and Lois fights him off, but the man's bodyguard comes up from behind and uses a tazer to knock Lois out!
Clark overheard the bouncer admitting the manager of the club had been selling dancers to the foreign man for $500,000 each. Chloe took pictures of the license plates of the cars in the parking lot and they find one that's from a foreign embassy and Chloe looks up the plates address and Clark super-speeds to the apartment. It's empty but he finds a picture of Lois on the floor and calling Chloe she suggests he use the printer in the apartment to reprint the last document it made and out from it comes a fake passport for Lois so now they know she's the next girl who will disappear. Clark hears a helicopter taking off from the roof and he runs up there and sees the copter leaving while Lois fights them inside. Clark grabs a cable and leaps to the choppers runner and wrapping it with cable, he then he pulls the helicopter back down to the rooftop.
Lois exits the copter just as the police arrive but Detective Sawyer tells Lois and Clark that she has to release the man as he has diplomatic immunity and they all watch helplessly as he climbs back in and flies away. Clark goes to see Lex and thanks him for his help and tells Lex he always thought of the Senator as his hero. Lex reminds Clark that just as King David in the Bible sent his best friend off to die in battle so he could take the man's wife as his own, all heroes are still human and vulnerable to temptations. Clark returns home to find the Senator waiting for him and he tells him he's pulling out of the race. Then the senator tells Jonathan Kent that he thinks that Jonathan is the man that's perfect for running for the senate seat as he's the type who was made to fight off the Luthors of the world.
Clark helps Lois move into Lana's old apartment and Chloe arrives and shows them that she got the by-line and her tip to Interpol got the diplomat's son arrested overseas. And Lois swallows her pride and actually thanks Clark for his helping to save her and Clark basks in her momentary praise. Little does either know that someday Clark will have practically a second career of getting Lois out of tight spots!

Our Story:
Clark drops in on Lana at the dorm room she shares with Chloe at Metropolis U. with some Chinese food. He gives her a package he found outside the door and she tells him to open it while she starts to eat. Inside is a piece of what a note from Lex Luthor says is a new color of meteor rock that's silver and Clark accidentally pricks himself with it in taking it out of the box. In a minute he starts to acts nervous and tells Lana he has to get back to the farm in Smallville. While on the road he notices he's got a splinter from the strange meteor rock but suddenly he's accosted by a mysterious truck that's all black with tinted windows and eventually he's run off the road. By the time he climbs out of the wrecked pickup, there's no sign of his attacker, and then he gets a cell phone call in which the caller says he knows who Clark realty is!
Martha Kent is worried about Jonathan Kent running for Senator against Lex as it may be a strain on his weak heart. She also worries that someone digging into their past may find out the truth about Clark. Clark comes in and tells them that may have already occurred due to the accident and the phone call he got afterwards. Jonathan advises Clark to lay low and act normally so that no one can get any proof about his abilities. Next we see Clark in class and Professor Fine is taking about famous traitors in history and how human duplicity is a character trait of our species. Clark is leaving class and when he picks up his back pack a piece of green kryptonite falls out of it and then projected onto the classroom screen is a message saying "I know how to kill you". He hurries and catches up to the Professor who tells Clark that a black truck's been after him also and he thinks their research into Luthorcorp may be causing Lex to come after them.
He gives Clark a license plate number he got from the truck and Clark says he'll take it to Chloe at her job at the Daily Planet so she can track it down. Clark goes to Chloe and while she's waiting for the information on the truck to come in on the fax machine, Clark notices that there are e-mails from Lionel Luthor on her laptop. He accuses her of betraying his secrets and then stalks out leaving Chloe shocked at his behavior. Lana visits Lex and shows him the silver kryptonite and Lex denies ever seeing it before or sending it to her. Lana is skeptical and she tells Lex she is so as he still denies anything about the spaceship he obtained after the latest meteor shower she saw the ship land and open.
He confides in her that he is trying to protect her as anyone who knows about the ship may be in potential danger and finally agrees to let her see it. They go to the lab Lex is keeping it in and Lex tells Lana he wants her help in trying to open it again and that all he cares about is protecting her from danger. Lex's father Lionel visits Jonathan Kent on the farm and while Clark watches from outside, Lionel tells Jonathan that he's worried about Lex gaining too much power and he wants to back Jonathan's run for the senate. Jonathan is leery of the offer until Lionel tells him he knows all about Clark and his powers and he then gives Jonathan money in an envelope which Jonathan takes and shakes the elder Luthor's hand in a deal he feels will keep Clark from being dissected on a lab table like some freak.
Clark confronts Jonathan in the house and grabs the envelope from Pa's pocket insisting it contains cash but Martha and Jonathan see it's just balance sheets showing what Lex is spending in his campaign. Clark shoves Martha aside roughly then lifts Jonathan in the air by the throat until Chloe comes in with green kryptonite and forces Clark to flee declaring they've all turned on him. Martha and Jonathan are surprised by Chloe knowing about Clark and she tells them she found out last year and that she thinks that silver kryptonite may be causing Clark to act this way. Martha and Jonathan are surprised as they've never heard of anything but green and red kryptonite. Clark runs to Metropolis and tries to convince Lana to run away with him but when Chloe comes in he speeds away in panic. Chloe explains to Lana that Clark's been infected by the sliver meteor rock and tells her to stay there in case he returns.
Clark goes to see the Professor who now claims he hasn't seen Clark in days and he never gave him any truck's license plate to have checked out. The Professor tells Clark to wait in his office until he returns, but when Clark enters the room he hallucinates seeing the spaceship he came to Earth in, and then he hears Lex declaring that Clark is the first of a invasion force and he will kill him first. Then green mist pours our from a tube while Lex tells Clark he's the one who'll kill him and Clark tears the door off and runs away. Lana storms in on Lex insisting the silver meteor rock is Lex' plan to come between she and Clark but Lex still says he doesn't know anything about it. He takes the silver rock and tells Lana he'll have his scientists come up with a cure for Clark right away. Clark is watching from outside the window and he's sees Lana and Lex embrace and kiss and Lana looks directly at him after the kiss!
Clark breaks into the mansion and Lex grabs a gun when the power fails and he goes looking for Clark who he finds in a hallway. Clark declares Lex has tried to get rid of him all these years just so he could have Lana. Clark grabs Lex and squeezes the gun painfully from his wrist and then tosses Lex thirty feet away smashing him into a display case while Lana flees downstairs in the mansion. Clark chases her and finds her easily with his x-ray vision and holds her in the air by the throat slowly choking her. Suddenly Professor Fine appears calling Clark Kal-El and telling him not to hurt Lana. Clark drops Lana and smacks the Professor aside who shocks Clark by blasting him with heat-vision just like Clark's stunning him. Clark asks who he is and he tells him he's a fellow kryptonian and then he rams a device into Clark's neck that sucks out the silver kryptonite sliver. Then the Professor super-speeds away leaving a shocked Clark behind.
Clark returns to his senses and picks up an injured Lana just as Lex and his security force arrive. Next we see Chloe visiting Lana in the hospital and she leaves Clark alone with Lana but not before telling him she has been talking to Lionel Luthor but only to get help into investigating Lex, and that she would die before she would betray his secrets. Lana tells Clark that Chloe explained everything to him and she'd never get involved with Lex. When Clark mentions he heard them talking about a spaceship though, Lana acts hesitantly and changes the subject. Chloe see Clark in the hall and tells him the silver kryptonite mysteriously disappeared during all the excitement. Lionel visits Lex and tells him he'll never have a chance with Lana as she knows what's really in his heart and running for political office won't change anything.
Jonathan tells Martha and Clark that he's worried about Clark's secrets coming out if he runs against Lex but Clark convinces him to run anyway and they'll deal with whatever happens as a family. Professor Fine visits Clark in his barn loft telling him he's really also from Krypton and he's there to help prepare him for what's coming. The Professor is convinced that humans have promise but they are a duplicitous race and untrustworthy. Clark tells him that people aren't perfect but they have good and they are worth trusting. The Professor tells Clark when he's ready to accept the truth about humans he knows where to find him. Then he leaves and goes to the lab where Lex is keeping his spaceship. He holds up the piece of silver kryptonite and all the silver drains into his hand and Professor Fine drops what is now an ordinary rock to the ground!

Our Story:
Martha Kent gets a ride home from Lois as her car is in the shop. But after Lois pulls away a strong wind rises and a flash of red light comes from the sky and envelops Martha. Clark is in his room and notes the disturbance and races outside to find his Mother lying on the ground unconscious. When he awakens her and asks what just happened, she has no memory of the wind or light and claims to have simply fainted from not eating that day! Clark visits Chloe at her job at the Daily Planet and tells her what happened and also relays his fear that this is the event Jor-El, his biological father, told him would occur where someone close to him will die. Back at the Talon coffee shop in Smallville, Lex Luthor is having a photo shoot for his campaign as he's running for the state senate.
Lois is working behind the counter and she sarcastically notes that Lex has had one too many pictures taken lately and he derides her as just one of the hired hands there and her opinion hardly matters. Lois tells Lex she thinks he is just another rich person buying his way into office and that someone like him has a lot of dirty secrets that someone will discover which will derail his campaign. He brushes her off leaving a bad taste in Lois' mouth. Clark goes to see Professor Fine at his school who he has just learned is a fellow survivor of Krypton. He asks for information about his father and the Professor mentions he knows about Jor-El's claim that someone close to Clark will die soon. He tells him that in time he will teach Clark about his true father but he must be patient. He also asks if any strange markings have appeared on Martha Kent and Clark says no and angrily leaves after the Professor says that we humans are an impatient and primitive race.
Clark returns home and tells Martha and Jonathan about the fact that the Professor is a fellow kryptonian and he has confided in him. Jonathan is upset as kryptonians have caused nothing but trouble so far for Clark and tells him to stay away from Professor Fine. Martha Kent suddenly complains that she can't feel her left arm and her shoulder is burning. And when they look at her shoulder there is s strange rash breaking out on it which is rapidly spreading! They have Martha checked out by Doctors at the medical center who give her antibiotics and report all her vital signs are steady and send her home. When Clark shows he's still worried, Jonathan asks if there's anything Clark wants to tell him but Clark doesn't mention Jor-El's dire prediction of death.
Lex Luthor's father Lionel visits Chloe at the Planet and tells her that there is a Professor Fine at Central Kansas A&M who has strange powers including super-speed, strength, and heat-vision. He tells her such a story would make her journalistic career and then leaves. Clark meets the Professor and tells him of the strange rash that his mother has and Professor Fine tells Clark that Jor-El was a mad dictator who ruled Krypton and tortured his enemies with the same disease Martha Kent now has. He also tells Clark that Jor-El destroyed Krypton despite the efforts of the people's only hero, a man named Zod. Clark is skeptical of the story but the Professor insists he must see Martha Kent immediately and they go to the farm. The rash is spreading through Ma's veins and suddenly she starts to convulse badly. Professor Fine tells Jonathan to hold a piece of Kryptonite to her forehead and that seems to help. But he tells Clark it's only temporary and that Martha Kent will die in a few hours.
Clark finally tells Jonathan about Jor-El stating a life close to Clark would be taken soon and Jonathan tells Clark to stop Jor-El however he can. Clark speeds away and the next we see of him he is in the Fortress of Solitude in the frozen north. He activates the multi-crystal control panel to speak to Jor-El who tells Clark he has done nothing to harm his Mother, but the fact that Clark once gave up his powers and Jor-El returned them still means he will suffer the death of someone close and nothing can change that now. Lionel visits his son Lex and tells him that he knows about the ship Lex is hiding in Warehouse 15 and that he better stop obsessing over it as disclosure about it to the public will ruin his chances for election. What Lionel doesn't know is that the ship has been emitting strange energies for 48 hours that Lex's scientists can't explain.
Professor Fine leaves from his classes at the school but he doesn't know that Chloe is trailing him for her investigation of him suggested by Lionel Luthor. Back at the farm Martha Kent is slowly dying and she consoles Clark by telling him that she's very proud of the man she raised and she's willing to die to give Clark life. She thanks him for all the happiness he's given her and she wouldn't change a thing. She tells him after she dies her love will always live on in his heart. Lois again visits Chloe determined to help her get the goods on Lex so he won't get elected. They use information that Professor Fine developed that Chloe's uncovered investigating him that points to the enigmatic Warehouse 15 and the pair drive there. While Lois distracts the guard at the gate, Chloe slips into the warehouse and finds the room where the spaceship is. Even thought she's looking through a vent with a slowly revolving fan, she sees a black liquid come from the ship that slowly forms into none other then Professor Fine!
A guard catches Chloe who shoves him away and Lois and Chloe speed off into the night. With Martha dying Clark desperately goes to the Professor begging his help to stop Jor-El from killing his mother. The Professor tells Clark that if he destroys the Fortress of Solitude it will stop the power that is killing Martha Kent. Chloe stops at the farm after they leave and finding out that Clark and the Professor have left for the Fortress she leaves to intercept them. Clark and the Professor are already at the fortress and the professor gives Clark a black crystal to insert into the control panel which Clark does and the Fortress immediately begins to rattle and shake apart with strange energies flying through the air!
Then the Professor pulls out a piece of Kryptonite and Clark collapses from its effect. The Professor tells Clark he isn't truly a Kryptonian but something that was made by them which is much more intelligent. He needed Clark as he was the only one who could insert the crystal which will not only destroy the Fortress but free General Zod who was in fact the real dictator that tried to rule Krypton. A cone of energy opens in the Fortress and a flat panel with a man inside it starts to come closer while the Professor welcomes General Zod as he tells Clark that Zod will remake the Earth into the new Krypton. But Chloe has gone to the Kawatche caves and finding the control panel there with Clark's spaceship key in it, she transports herself to the Fortress and throws the kryptonite far away from Clark.
Clark runs to the console and removes the black crystal and the energy cone with Zod disappears and the Professor flies around in a circle and attacks Clark with heat-vision stunning him. But Clark rises and grabbing the Professor he throws him across the Fortress with all his strength and impales his body on the many crystals of the control panel. The Professor starts to bleed black liquid and suddenly disappears in a flash. The second he does, his spaceship inside Lex's Warehouse 15 also disappears with him. And at that same moment, Martha Kent rises from the couch at the farm completely cured! Later, Chloe returns Clarks spaceship key to him and he tells her about Zod and the fact that the Professor tried to use him to free Zod. And the fact that the Professor and his ship have disappeared doesn't necessarily mean that his threat is finished. Lionel visits Lex who accuses his father of stealing the spaceship but Lex doesn't believe his father and as always they part angrily.
At the Daily Planet Lois laments the fact they never did get any dirt to use on Lex and she asks Chloe how she can stand to let the story go. Chloe warns Lois she might have the early symptoms of becoming a reporter and with a smile from Lois as she looks at the Daily Planet globe we see that just might be the case. At the farm, Martha cautions Clark that losing a loved one doesn't mean that life stops; we must carry on in the face of our losses. And Jonathan counsels Clark it also means that spending time with the ones we love is most important of all, as we never know when their time to leave us may come.

Martha Kent: Annette O'Toole
Lana Lang: Kristen Kreuk

Our Story:
Lex Luthor meets with a mad named Griff in nearby Granville Kansas on Christmas Eve to discuss digging up or even creating dirt to use against Jonathan Kent who is now Lex's opponent in the race for senator of the state. Lex tells Griff he's not sure that's the way he wants to go yet but he'll let him know. As he leaves the warehouse he's confronted by two armed thieves who want his car keys and valuables. But before Lex can comply, the woman of the two for no reason shoots Lex in the back, and then as he turns to face her, she shoots him again in the chest and he collapses to the ground! But Lex comes awake unharmed in a bed between soft sheets and when he turns over he's shocked to see Lana is laying next to him. Then another shock comes as a little boy who is supposedly his son Alexander jumps into the bed with him and then he notices Lana is pregnant with their second child. Alexander and Lana go to get dressed to go shopping for a Christmas tree as Lex reaches under his shirt to find scars from surgery for his wounds. Then he is shocked again when his dead mother appears to tell him all this can be his if he makes the right decision. But then she disappears and we see Lex is still lying in the middle of the road bleeding to death!
Next we see Martha Kent baking cookies for a Christmas Eve party they're having and trying to keep Jonathan from eating any before the guests arrive. They also disagree about Jonathan running for the Senate but Jonathan is undeterred. Lana and Clark are finishing up decorating the tree when Clark gets a call from Chloe saying she's at the Daily Planet and needs Clarks help for an emergency. Meanwhile Lex is being wheeled into the hospital and being prepped for surgery as he's slipping away fast. But he's also still in his dream and he's leaving with Alex to get the tree and Lana tells him to try and stay in their budget as it's been seven years since his father cut him off and they don't have that kind of money. Lex and Alex run into Clark and Chloe while shopping and Clark tells Lex he's finally going to make full time reporter for the Daily Planet and Chloe's book about the Luthorcorp expose is about to be published thanks to Lex's help. Clark tells Lex not to forget the party at his parent's house and Lex picks out a huge tree and he and Alex leave.
Back in reality, Lex's Doctor informs his father Lionel Luthor that Lex will survive, but he will be permanently paralyzed from the chest down. Lionel tells the Doctor he's having Lex taken to a specialist to prevent that from happening over the Doctors objections that such an operation could kill Lex at this point. At the Daily Planet, Clark arrives and Chloe tells him she needs his help to deliver the Toys for Tots presents as a truckers strike has made it impossible. She knows of his abilities and that he's the only one who can do the job at this late hour. But when Clark sees the toys number in the thousands even he's worried about getting the job done. Soon Clark is speeding all over Metropolis dropping off presents for needy children. But a little boy catches Clark and points out a Santa on an adjoining rooftop and says he's Santa. Clark notices the man is drinking and standing on the building roof's edge and he speeds over to help him.
It seems that the man dressed as Santa is discouraged with what's happened to the Christmas spirit and that the commercialism has taken over and destroyed it. All people do is complain and act greedy and he's despairs for the loss of "Peace on Earth" and "Good will towards men". As Lex is being airlifted for his operation, he explains in his dream to Lana that he always gets too big a tree as after his mother died his father would never allow Christmas in the house and Lex likes to overdo it a little to compensate. Lana tells Lex that the way he changed after he was shot made him the man she knows and loves today. Back on the rooftop, Santa is amazed to find out about Clark and Chloe giving up their Christmas Eves to "play" Santa Claus to all those needy children. The Santa rejoices that the Christmas spirit isn't dead after all but as he proclaims it he stumbles over the roof's edge to the street where Clark speeds down and catches him just in time. He runs off amazed at what Clark has done at the same moment Lex is being operated on to save his mobility.
In his dream, Lex and Lana and Alex arrive at the Kent household and are greeted lovingly with Jonathan Kent telling Lex he loves Lex as much as his own son. He then surprises Lex by announcing that as Senator he is now proclaiming Lex has been chosen as the Humanitarian of the Year in Kansas and he also says that Lex is the finest man he knows. Lex walks out on the porch and his mother appears and tells him he must make the right decision and follow his heart and not his ambition if he's to attain this life. She disappears as Clark comes outside and tells Lex he's got a wonderful life and he's very happy for him. Lex is near death on the operating table as in his dream Lana has gone into labor and delivered a beautiful baby girl. But then Lana starts to bleed internally and Lex is rushed from the room after being told Lana will probably not survive. Lex goes to see his estranged father and begs him to help his wife survive by airlifting her to Metropolis so a specialist can save her.
Lionel Luthor is callous and tells Lex the decision to walk away from him and the legacy of power he wanted Lex to have has bought him to this and it's all his fault. He tells him he never should have given up the senatorial race and went against his father and now his desire to live happily ever after has caused all this. Lex returns to Lana's side to tell her he's always loved her and please not to leave him. She tells Lex to be strong for Alex and Lily and she loves him too. She says he's a good man and he should never change. Than she slips away and dies breaking Lex's heart. His mother appears and Lex tells her that every one he's ever loved has died, even in this supposed dream life. His Mother tells him that this was a life filled with love despite his losses but Lex is inconsolable. He shoots awake from his hospital bed with his father telling him it was close, but he will survive to walk again.
At the Daily Planet, the Santa that Clark met on the rooftop appears and tells Chloe that she and Clark have renewed his belief in Christmas and that he'll deliver the rest of the presents for her as he has some experience in these matters. Chloe is doubtful of the Santa's sanity but agrees and turns her back for a second. When she turns around again the Santa and all the presents have mysteriously disappeared! Back in the hospital, Lex tells his father he saved him just so he wouldn't be shamed by having a crippled son and he had no right to gamble with Lex's life with the high risk operation. At the Kent farmhouse, as Chloe tells Clark about her Santa Claus encounter, it's started to snow and everyone rushes outside to revel in the Christmas spirit. In the hospital Lex has Griff visit him and tells him he now knows that only money and power will guarantee him the life he wants and he tells Griff to get whatever information it takes to knock Jonathan Kent out of the race as he wants to be Senator. And with this embittered decision, Lex goes down a road which ironically will never give him a happy life. Money and power can acquire almost everything on Earth, but nothing can buy the love that Lex has just forsaken.

Our Story:
It's a big political rally for Jonathan Kent who is running for Senator of Kansas. It's in full swing with cheering crowds, but high up in the arena a sniper is assembling their rifle and preparing to shoot Jonathan Kent while he's on stage. He gives a rousing speech and the crowd goes wild as Jonathan Kent steps back from the podium to acknowledge their applause. The sniper takes careful aim at Pa's head and as the camera pulls back we're shocked to see it's Lois Lane holding the rifle! Suddenly the trigger is pulled and the bullet flies towards Jonathan's head and his sure and sudden death! It's now 48 hours earlier and we're at Luthor mansion where Lex is running his campaign arranging meetings and photo opportunities.
The Central Kansas A&M University students for Lex Luthor are bought in so Lex can give take five minutes to thank them for getting out and securing the youth vote for him. Among them is a young blonde woman named Samantha Drake who is the obvious leader and she impresses Lex with her encyclopedic knowledge of him. He tells them that to achieve the win they must go an extra ten more miles then usual and that total victory is the only acceptable outcome. After the speech Samantha asks Lex if she can have her picture taken with him by a painting she cites as his father having given him on a special occasion showing just how deep her information about Lex is. As Lex is leaving he gets a call from Griff who he hired to dig up dirt on Jonathan Kent. Griff tells Lex he's got a bombshell that's guaranteed to knock Mr. Kent out of the race and they arrange a meeting.
But as Griff exits the phone booth, Lionel Luthor is waiting for him and he offers Griff much more money for the information and Griff agrees and they exchange the cash and the packet of facts. As soon as he looks at the information, Lionel takes out a lighter and immediately destroys the paper surprising Griff. Back at the Kent farm, Jonathan's campaign manager is arranging a photo shoot and has the Kents dressed looking like well to do people instead of the rural farmers that they are but Jonathan tells them the man got the last Senator elected five times and he knows what he's doing. But then Lois comes in and tells Jonathan that the campaign manager has him quoted in the daily paper as saying that corporate interests can be met as well as the farmer's interests can. Hearing that, Jonathan decides to fire the man and he hires Lois as his new campaign manager!
After the man leaves, Jonathan gets a call from an electronically disguised voice telling him that this is his last warning to get out of the race and Jonathan tells him to stop calling and hangs up angrily. Then he takes a red pill out of a pillbox he carries and swallows it. The next day Lois is putting up campaign posters on campus when Samantha Drake tears some down and she and Lois get into a verbal fight about their respective candidates. As Samantha and her friends leave she repeats Lex's words to them that "defeat is not an option". Back in her dorm room in Metropolis, Lana is studying satellite photos from the meteor showers that hit Smallville when Clark comes in and she quickly puts the photos away. When they start to kiss on the bed, Clark suddenly gets nervous and backs off which makes Lana question why they haven't been intimate since he miraculously survived being shot and he seems almost afraid to even touch her.
Clark fires back that all Lana does now is fanatically study astronomy and seems more interested in that instead of him and she leaves with the two of them feeling estranged from each other. Back at the farm, Jonathan is working in the barn when suddenly one of the students for Lex Luthor walks in and Jonathan heads towards the young man. But another one of them knocks him out with a baseball bat and then Samantha emerges from the shadows and the trio surrounds Pa's unconscious body. Martha Kent is throwing out the trash at the Talon coffee shop at closing time when up walks Lionel Luthor. He tells Martha that Lex is pulling out all the stops financially as the race nears its end and that the Kents are nearly broke and can't possibly win without help. Martha Kent reluctantly agrees and Lionel offers her a huge check that will provide more then enough funding to carry Pa's campaign to the finish line. But Martha tells Lionel that Jonathan would never forgive her if she accepted money from a Luthor and turns down the offer.
Clark goes to Chloe at the Daily Planet and tells her he's afraid to be intimate with Lana since he got his abilities back as he worries about hurting her, but Chloe reminds him he can control his powers in everyday events so he's really avoiding the real issue that Lana is studying the meteor showers and she's curious how he survived being shot also. Clark knows that Lana is getting closer to the truth and Chloe cautions him to think about telling her the truth about himself before Lana finds it out on her own. Clark leaves and he and Martha arrive back home to hear Shelby barking out in the barn. They go to check it out and are horrified to find Jonathan hanging upside down from a barn beam tied up and beaten badly. And painted across the beam in red letters it says, "Drop out while you can"! Lois meets Martha and Clark at the hospital telling them she's postponed the rally for a few days while Jonathan recovers but Jonathan gets out of the bed and gets dressed stating that he's not quitting now and giving Lex exactly what he wants.
Clark tells Jonathan he doesn't think Lex would go this far to stop him but Jonathan disagrees. As Clark leaves the room Lex himself is rounding the corner and he tells Clark he had nothing to do with the attack and has even offered a reward for the capture of whoever did it. Clark asks Lex what's so important about the race for Senator and Lex tells Clark he considers it a stepping stone possibly to get all the way to the White House. Samantha and her two cohorts talk about how Jonathan is still going ahead with the campaign and she says they have to go even further to stop him. The two men disagree and one even says he's going to the police to turn them in before this goes too far. Samantha's response is to pull out a gun and shoot them both dead. Then she takes an electric razor and starts to completely shave her head bald like Lex! When Lex gets back to the mansion he's talking to someone on his phone about how Griff missed their rendezvous.
To his surprise a shaven headed Samantha is waiting for him and she slips off her coat to reveal she's naked underneath. She's also wearing his favorite woman's perfume and tells him that Jonathan Kent's dropping out of the race. Lex realizes she masterminded the attack on Jonathan Kent and tells her he would never condone harming the Kents and he intends to have his security to escort her to the police for the attack on Jonathan Kent. But when he turns to the phone Samantha knocks him out with a vase and tells his unconscious form he's just having a moment of weakness. Clark visits Chloe again and has her trace the phone call Jonathan Kent had threatening him and it comes back to the Students for Lex Luthor headquarters. He races there to find the two dead men and blonde hair all over the floor. He finds a Kent campaign poster with Pa's picture mutilated and then he finds the picture of the then blonde haired Samantha next to Lex she had taken just days ago, so now he knows who to look for.
The rally we saw at the story's start is in full swing and Lois notices someone who doesn't belong backstage as she has had security posted everywhere since the attack on Jonathan Kent. The person turns out to be Samantha and she takes Lois at gunpoint upstairs high in the arena and assembles the sniper rifle and then holding her gun at Lois' head she tells her to shoot Jonathan Kent. She tells Lois the press will think Lois got into an illicit affair with Jonathan Kent while Lois was living with the Kents and then snapped when she thought she would lose him to the public. Lois turns and fights but the crazed Samantha overcomes her and grabs the rifle herself while Lois lies stunned on the ground. At the end of Jonathan Kent's speech she aims directly at his head and fires just as Clark enters the auditorium. His super-senses hear the shot over the cheers and going into super-speed mode he sees the bullet flying towards his father's head.
Racing faster then the speeding bullet he manages to grab it and leap out of sight before anyone can see him. But everyone there realizes someone has just shot at Jonathan and security covers Jonathan as Clark races back upstairs to find Lois has awakened and overcome Samantha while he saved Pa. The next day Lionel visits Lex who tells his father that Griff was found shot to death and he wishes his father had backed him up for once. Lionel tells Lex he's slipping and he'll never win this way and then he leaves. Pa's poll numbers have improved in the wake of the attack and he may actually have a chance to win. But when he leaves Lois tells Martha Kent that Jonathan really can't win as they're broke and there's no money left for the campaign. But Martha tells Lois she will get the money but Lois must never reveal that Martha Kent got the money somehow. Lana drops by and Clark tells her it's true he's been hesitant since the shooting and he just doesn't want to lose her and Lana reassures him that won't happen.
Then Lana tells Clark he was right about her obsession with astronomy and she's studied both meteor showers and there's no way they were just random events. She also surmises that since a ship arrived in the second one that she saw two people come out of, she thinks that the first shower contained a ship also, and she thinks that someone that came from that ship has been living there among them all that time. This makes Clark realize that Chloe was right and that Lana is going to find him out despite his efforts all these years to conceal the truth about himself. Then late that night behind the Talon, we see Martha Kent getting into a limo with Lionel Luthor and we realize she's going to accept his offer of secretly providing campaign funds for Jonathan Kent's senatorial race!

Our Story:
Jonathan Kent is tied in the polls in his race for Senator of the state against Lex Luthor and that doesn't make Lex happy as he tells his aide. Suddenly a male and female police officer burst into the room stating there's a bomb threat and the mansion must be evacuated. Lex tells them his security didn't alarm him and heads for the phone. As his back is turned the two officers draw their guns and threaten Lex telling him to cooperate. Lex's aide throws paperwork at them and turns to run and the male shoots him in the back killing him. Lex uses the moment to dive into his safe room and slam the door shut locking himself inside. The man tells Lex he's already cut the mansions hardwire connections and set up a scrambler so cell phones and the alarms are useless also. When Lex asks him what he wants, he tells him he wants the spaceship that we saw crash to Earth in the episode "Arrival", or the safe room is going to be Lex's tomb!
Lana is visiting Clark in his barn loft while he's studying and she wants to know why Clark won't be more intimate with her. Clark says it's complicated but the truth is he doesn't trust his powers since regaining them and is afraid to hurt Lana. Lana angrily starts to leave but drops some paperwork as she does. It contains documentation and drawings of the Kryptonian ship that crashed that the two outlaw police are looking for. Lana confesses she and Lex have been researching the ship in hopes of finding out where it came from and who the murderous aliens were that she saw killing police that day of the last meteor shower. Clark's upset that Lana was secretive about it, but she says he always refuses to discuss it and it's causing a strain in their relationship. The fake policeman explains to Lex that he was a real Sheriff's officer the day the ship crashed and when his response team came to the ship everyone but he was killed. He was the only survivor although he suffered a badly burnt left arm and hand. He tells Lex he saw Lex and his men come to the site and take the ship away and he was thought to be crazy when he told his story and was suspended from the force and institutionalized.
Lex denies everything and tells him he'll never get into his safe room and they have a stalemate, which the man says he intends to break. Clark tells Martha Kent that Lana and Lex are investigating the ship and Martha tells Clark as long as he won't tell Lana the truth about himself there will be a problem between them. Clark is afraid the truth will drive Lana away and can't bring himself to tell Lana. Lois drives up and tells Martha and Clark she needs to see Jonathan as she's running his campaign. Lois and Jonathan talk about the race nearly being over and how she's saturating the papers, radio, and TV for the homestretch and Jonathan asks how they can afford all that. Lois brushes him off and says just concentrate on winning and she'll handle the details. Lana is driving down the road that night talking to Chloe about her and Clark's problems when a police cruiser pulls her over. The officer walks up to Lana's car and it's the female that helped kidnap Lex, and now she pulls a gun and does the same to Lana!
Lana is bought to Lex's mansion but she also denies knowing anything about a spaceship. The man tells Lana he saw her there that day and knows that Lex and Lana have been working together. He puts a gun to Lana's head and threatens to kill her so Lex relents and opens the door. The man holds Lana and the woman holds Lex but they still deny there ever was a spaceship. Lex elbows the woman in the face and grabs her gun shooting at the man while he and Lana dive back into the safe room with the man shooting at them. Lana is all right, but Lex had been wounded and now they're trapped in the room with Lex bleeding badly! Jonathan Kent goes to his campaign headquarters and demands to know from Lois where all the money is coming from and Lois confesses the backing is from Lionel Luthor. Jonathan is upset and though Lois says Lionel just wants to stop Lex from winning, Jonathan tells Lois that Lionel Luthor puts a price on every favor he does and with Jonathan it'll be no different. Clark visits Chloe for help in his spat with Lana but Chloe tells Clark she won't spy on Lana for him and he should consider telling her the truth about his powers and where he really comes from.
Just then the Sheriff's department in Smallville calls Chloe advising her that Lana's car has been found abandoned on the roadside and there's no sign of Lana. Clark speeds to the scene and Sheriff Adams tells Clark they can't find a trace of Lana although her phone and pocketbook were left behind. Clark uses his x-ray vision on Lana's car and finds a G.P.S. tracking device that the Sheriff reads a serial number off of. Clark speeds away but the Sheriff is distracted from his being gone by another officer telling her there's been a security alarm from the Luthor mansion. The Sheriff calls Officer Harris who's checking it out and she tells the Sheriff all's well, that it was just a false alarm. The problem is that Officer Harris is the female half of the pair that has Lex and Lana barricaded in his safe room! The rogue male officer has hacked into the safe room's climate controls and it's becoming dangerously hot in there. Sheriff Adams decides to check out the alarm for herself and drives to the mansion.
Inside the safe room Lex tells Lana he shot the microwave scrambler and the police should arrive soon. Lana tells Lex he should just give them the ship and he replies he can't because then the crazed pair would kill them both. He also tells Lana he's sorry he ever got her involved and she tells Lex she's grateful that he risked himself to save her life. The Sheriff arrives at the mansion and Officer Harris follows her into the main room. When the Sheriff sees the ex-officer Flynn and the dead aide's body she draws her gun on Flynn, but his female partner Officer Harris shoots the Sheriff in the back killing her! Clark seeks Chloe's help with her computer knowledge and she traces the G.P.S. unit as belonging to ex-Officer Flynn and they also find out he was locked away as psychotic for his claims of seeing aliens killing fellow officers. Jonathan is furious about Lois using Lionel Luthor's money but Martha confesses it was she who took the money. She tells Jonathan that he can stay honest despite the Luthor money helping him and he can still help many people as a state senator.
Lex is getting worse by the minute and tells Lana that he dreamt at Christmas time that he and she had grown closer and were very happy, and he hopes Clark knows how lucky he is to have Lana. He then tells Lana that he really doesn't have the ship anymore as it simply disappeared from the warehouse he was keeping it in. He was hoping he'd find it again and they'd find out the truth behind all the meteors that have affected both their lives. Then Lex passes out from lack of blood. Lana opens the safe room door and tells the two she'll take them to Warehouse 15 where the ship is and they leave. Chloe and Clark get into the Psychiatric unit where Officer Flynn was held and from tapes they watch they find out that it was Lex who took the ship and Clark speeds to Lex mansion to find the dead Sheriff and a badly wounded Lex who tells Clark where the kidnappers have taken Lana. The two hostage takers arrive with Lana at the warehouse with a bomb they'll use to blow up the warehouse and even though it won't harm the ship, all the media attention the explosion will draw will prove that Officer Flynn was sane the whole time and telling the truth.
Lana fights the two officers and manages to push a button which drops piping on the man and Lana fights the woman who eventually knocks Lana out. But the bomb had been started and the two kidnappers flee the building as the bomb explodes. Clark races into the warehouse just as the bomb explodes and literally super-speed runs through the explosion and scoops Lana up and races her outside to safety as the warehouse disappears in a massive blast. The TV blitz is on and Jonathan Kent is heading into the race's end, and Jonathan tells Lois and Martha that he sold the farm's back 40 acres and he'll use the money to pay Lionel Luthor back partially. Then through time he'll repay the rest off, but first he must win the race. Lana goes to see a recovering Lex and he tells Lana he'll never lie to her again and he'll work with her as a partner to find out the truth. Lana says she doesn't want to be partners but friends, and the two embrace just in time for Clark to walk into the hospital hall and see their embrace.
Clark goes to Chloe and tells her he loves Lana but Chloe tells him that the lies about himself he keeps telling Lana are only going to drive her further and further away. Clark sees that the truth may the only thing that will keep him and Lana together as a couple. But the cost of the truth will soon be seen, and it will be very high indeed.

Our Story:
Clark is waiting anxiously in his barn loft with of all things a lump of coal in his hand. Then Lana appears and asks what the mystery date he talked about is referring to. Clark tells Lana he can tell that he is losing her and it's his own fault as there's something he should have shown her a long time ago. He takes her to the Kawatche caves and into the console room hidden behind a wall. He tells her it was left there for his use and then he inserts his spaceship key into the console. As a bright light envelops them both, Clark asks Lana if she trusts him, and in response she takes his hand. They are transported to his Fortress of Solitude in the frozen north at once. Lana is amazed at what she sees and Clark tells her he was born on a planet named Krypton. He then gathers her in his arms and flies them far up into an upper chamber of the fortress.
Lana realizes and asks how many times he's saved her and he answers he couldn't allow anything to happen to her, and he wanted her to know the truth about him. Then he takes the lump of coal and squeezes it with all his strength until under the thousands of pounds of pressure it becomes a diamond. He takes out a ring and placing the diamond in the setting he uses a thin beam of heat-vision to seal the diamond in the ring and drops to one knee and asks Lana if she will marry him! Martha and Jonathan pull up to the farm after voting in the election in which Jonathan is running for state senator against Lex Luthor. Clark tells them that he's revealed everything to Lana and asked her to marry him and though they're surprised, they tell Clark they're very happy for he and Lana and Jonathan tells Clark he realizes that Clark is truly now a man, and not his young son anymore.
Lana meets up with Lois to help with the decorations for what hopefully will be Jonathan Kent's victory party. Lois can tell Lana has been through something different and Lana only asks her what she'd do if she found out something about someone she knew that changed the way you looked at them forever. Lois's response is the main question is does it change how you feel about that person, and that she feels she would be lucky to end up with someone as honorable as Clark is. Clark goes to the Daily Planet in Metropolis and tells Chloe that he has revealed his secrets to Lana and proposed to her and Lois hasn't answered him yet. Later at the farm Clark is getting ready to leave for what they hope will be a victory party for Pa's election, and Lana pulls up and says yes she'll marry him and the two embrace in glee. Jonathan helps Martha clasp her pearls around her neck as he has so many times before and they leave for the Talon coffee shop which is serving as campaign headquarters.
Martha and Jonathan tell Lana they're very happy for her and Clark and they hope the two have as many years of happiness together as they have had. Suddenly Lois appears and announces that Jonathan Kent has won the election and is now the new state senator. The place goes wild and Clark is pulled away while Lana gets a phone call from Lex and she goes to see him. Lex is drunk and tells Lana he just wanted to escape his father's shadow for once and once again he's failed. He's lost again and when he sees Lana's engagement ring he tells her that she's chosen him after all the lies and mysteries surrounding Clark. He knows she's doubted Clark and tells her that Clark must have told her whatever his secrets are. Lana denies Clark told her anything and Lex reacts violently. She flees the mansion and drives away. She calls Clark and tells him that somehow Lex knows about Clark just from the way they argued. She tells Clark where she is and then Lex pulls alongside her yelling for her to stop so they can talk.
Lana is distracted by Lex and doesn't see a school bus pulling through the intersection. She's struck broadside and her vehicle flips several times violently. As Lex stands there in shock, Clark super-speeds up to the site in plain view of Lex. Clark goes to Lana's bloodied body just as Jonathan Kent pulls up also. He pulls Clark away from Lana telling Clark there's nothing he could have done to save her. As Clark cries in Pa's arms, Jonathan tells Clark that Lana is dead. Clark goes to the fortress and begs Jor-El to help him save Lana. Jor-EL explains that though Clark may have extraordinary powers, he is not a god. When Jor-EL bought Clark back from death he was told a life would be exchanged for his and it is Lana's life that was lost. With tears in his eyes Clark tells Jor-el if he had never told Lana about his powers none of this would have happened and again begs Jor-El to save her.
Jor-El tells Clark that even if the events change, the universe will demand a balance to be struck for his regaining his life and says there is one special crystal in the fortress he may use only once and then events can never be changed again so choose wisely. Clark sees the crystal hovering in the air and without hesitation he grabs it and in a bright flash he is back in his barn again with the lump of coal in his hand and Lana is just arriving. The crystal has taken Clark back 24 hours into the past so he may relive the last day over again. This time Clark doesn't tell Lana the truth about himself and Lana knows him too well and tells him she's tired of all his lying and says that if he can't be truthful with her she wants them to separate. Clark goes to Chloe and explains everything that happened in the day he's now reliving and Chloe tells Clark she'll stay with Lana to make sure that this time she's not killed.
We're at campaign headquarters again that night and again Jonathan Kent is announced as the victor. But suddenly the lights dim and go out and Clark realizes that this time Lois didn't make the announcement and he races upstairs to find Lois in a puddle of water and with an overturned toaster causing a short-circuit. Clark lifts Lois from the puddle of water just before the deadly shocks pass through it and they bounce harmlessly off of Clark. As this happens, Lana again gets the call from Lex and leaves in the blackout, but this time Jonathan Kent also gets a call. And this one's from Lionel Luthor congratulating him on "their" victory and says to meet him as there are matters to discuss. Lex is drunk again but this time Lana tells him that she and Clark have had their last fight. She says Clark wouldn't be honest with her and she can't understand why anyone would lie to someone they love. Lex's response is that he wouldn't and then he kisses Lana. Lana pushes Lex away and he apologizes but Lana leaves with Lex again angry and disappointed. Again Lana is driving down the road and Lex is chasing her.
But this time Chloe tells Clark that Lana slipped out during the blackout and looking at his watch he knows history is trying to repeat itself. He races towards the site of Lana's would-be death in time to grab the school bus by the rear bumper and slow it just enough so that this time it misses Lana's vehicle and all slide to a safe halt. Clark watches from the side of the road unseen as Lex apologizes to Lana and he leaves. As Lana and Lex talk Lana notices Jonathan Kent driving by on his way to the meeting that Lionel Luthor has demanded. They meet in the Kent farm barn. Lionel tells Jonathan that since he backed him he now expects them to be partners in the senate and Jonathan vehemently refuses telling Lionel he'll pay back every dollar that Lionel gave him for his campaign. But Lionel holds up a piece a paper we can't see that says he'll use as blackmail against Jonathan Kent.
Jonathan Kent crumples the paper and throws it on the barn floor and punches the elder Luthor in the mouth and hurls him over a work bench to the ground. Jonathan tells Lionel he'll never allow him to destroy his family and that the Kents stay together and that's the difference between the Luthor family and his. Jonathan walks out of the barn but he's acting strangely and starts to stagger the farther he walks. As Jonathan leaves the barn Lionel retrieves the piece of paper from the barn floor. Martha Kent and Clark pull up to see Jonathan staggering from the barn and they rush to him. With both holding his arms on each side he collapses even more and they carry him to the fence to sit him down. Jonathan Kent looks at Martha Kent and Clark one last time with love in his eyes and then falls to the ground completely. They both cry in pain as Jonathan Kent dies right in their arms in front of them.
As Martha and Clark prepare for the funeral, Martha realizes that Clark blames himself for Pa's death. She explains to him that even though he saved Lana, he can't be blamed for Pa's death. Even if he had a choice to save one or the other he could never had made such a decision. Clark worries how he'll be the man Jonathan wanted him to be and Martha tells Clark no matter where Jonathan is he is proud of the man Clark is, and she feels that someday many people will admire the man Clark has become. As Clark helps Martha put on her pearls as Jonathan always did, in this small simple act he now becomes the man of the house and Ma's tears show us she knows this. At the gravesite Lana holds Clark's hand for a few seconds but eventually she lets go and Clark is left standing watching his father's casket being lowered into the ground. He takes a handful of dirt and sprinkles it over his father's casket completing the burial ritual, and beginning a new chapter in his life as a man, no longer just a son.

He turns around and bumps straight into a dark haired woman in glasses who drops all her paperwork and Clark helps her clean it up while the woman looks nervously at the artist's depiction of the vigilante that the paper's about to print. Chloe gives the vigilante the name the Angel of Vengeance for her headline and then walks into the other room to get the police report for Clark when suddenly the vigilante appears and grabs Chloe from behind telling her not to print the story. Clark enters the room and the woman kicks Clark straight over a desk and into a cabinet demolishing it. Then she vanishes as quickly as she appeared leaving a stunned Clark and Chloe in her wake!
Clark decides to have Chloe play his mugging victim and he'll attack her to draw the vigilante out as she's the only one who knows what Ma's attacker looks like. Chloe walk the streets of the slum and Clark leaps out and grabs her purse telling her to scream loudly. The Angel of Vengeance appears and knocks Clark around again until Clark grabs her mask off her head and we see she's the girl Andrea that works at the Daily Planet! She then takes twenty foot leaps up the side of a building to land on the top but finds Clark there waiting for her! Lex meets his father at Luthorcorp and he accuses Lionel of trying to buy up Luthorcorp stock for a hostile takeover through a front outfit called Apex Corporation. Lionel tells Lex he can't raise any funding now that Lex spent so much money on his futile campaign for senator and he can't stop his father from taking over again. Lex tells his father not to get too far of himself and Lex leaves. The vigilante tells Clark she got her powers after getting a heart transplant from a person who died in the latest meteor shower in Smallville. Clark explains he doesn't want to expose her; he just wants his father's watch back. She then shows Clark she carries a piece of meteor rock in a necklace to remind her of her past but Clark weakens as soon as she shows it to him and he tells her he's allergic to the rock so she closes the broach and he recovers.
She also tells Clark she and her mother were walking home all those months ago when they were mugged by the two men that mugged his mother. They stabbed Andrea in the heart and when she came to she saw they had killed her mother, who was a local activist for stopping big money developers from tearing down the buildings for new expensive high-rises. She knows Clark also wants justice and not just his father's watch. The man who attacked both their parents has gone into hiding but he belongs to a group called the 13th Street gang who all pack guns, but if Clark is willing to, they will both go after the man. Martha goes to see Chloe and she tells her that Clark is denying his grief and if it comes out in anger it can be dangerous due to Clark's powers. They both take comfort in the fact that each other knows Clark's secret. Clark and the vigilante go to where the gang hangs out and confront a man they know was with the man they're looking for. As they leave, the man calls the man called Snake and Clark takes his phone at super-speed and they return to the Daily Planet to trace down the man's calls to find Snake.
Clark takes the phone and calls in a pizza order and gets the address from them that the phone number matches and he speeds off to the address with the vigilante tracking him. Clark finds Snake and holds him in the air with one hand trying to choke the location of the watch out of the man. Snake admits he hocked the watch and doesn't have it anymore. Andrea arrives and tells Clark to kill him as he is the one who killed her mom but Clark resists the temptation and drops Snake to the ground. But she takes out her kryptonite necklace and puts it next to Clark who falls to the ground in pain while she lifts up the man with her hand and holds the knife that killed her mother in her other hand. She tells Snake she wants to now why he killed her mother and he says it was a hit ordered by Apex Corporation who wanted to stop her resistance to them tearing down buildings to replace them with expensive apartments. She demands a name and Snake says the man who gave him the orders got his orders from Lionel Luthor. Though Clark is in pain, he begs Andrea not to hurt Snake but her pain over losing her mother is too great and she plunges the knife into his chest killing him and runs off to confront Lionel Luthor!
Lionel is having his things moved into Luthorcorp in anticipation of the board meeting in the morning that'll reinstate him as head of the corporation. But Lex arrives and tells him he knows that his father met with Jonathan Kent just before he died and he doesn't think his father wants Martha Kent to find out that fact. He tells his father to leave and then Lex stalks out of the room with his father's security key to the building in his hand. The man who helped Snake in the muggings arrives to find Snake is dead and then he goes to kill the helpless Clark. But as he drags Clark away from the necklace, Clark's powers return and he easily knocks the man away and speeds off to intercept Andrea at Luthorcorp. She crashes in through a window and dangles Lionel Luthor out the window telling him he must pay for his crimes just as Clark arrives. Clark and Lionel beg her not to do this but she says she's already killed and she knows Clark would never let her get away with that from what she's seen of him. She drops Lionel to certain death but Clark goes into super-speed mode and grabs Lionel back into the building as Andrea speeds away.
Later, Lionel visits Martha Kent telling her he knows the Governor wants her to take Jonathan Kent's senate seat. He tells her he's forgiving the campaign loans he gave to Jonathan Kent as a gesture of friendship and to call on him if she ever needs help. Clark returns to the Daily Planet but Andrea has disappeared, probably never to be found again. Clark confesses to Chloe he wanted to kill Snake himself but he heard his father's voice telling him it was wrong. Chloe asks Clark if he could be a vigilante for justice and Clark says he's hoping to find a way to not hide who he really is. He returns to his barn loft to find Lana has found his father's watch by searching every pawn shop in Metropolis. He thanks her and then finally puts the watch on, completing the journey to being the man of the Kent household. He goes into the house to find his mother watching videos of Jonathan teaching him to drive a tractor. She sees the watch on his wrist and embraces Clark as finally he cries on his Mother's shoulder releasing at last the painful grief he's withheld until now, as his father's image on the TV says goodbye.

Our Story:
Chloe is visiting her cousin Lois who now lives in the apartment over the Talon coffee shop and she's taking a shower when suddenly a lightning bolt hits the pole in front of the building and knocks out all the power. As she dries off she doesn't notice that there is the ghostly image of a young girl behind her. She lights a candle and then steps over to the mirror to brush out her hair and suddenly she sees the ghostly girl appear in the mirror as standing behind her. Lois hears Chloe scream and runs into the bathroom to find Chloe on the bathroom floor saying "help me", and she holds her hands up to Lois who sees that Chloe has slit her own wrists! Chloe is taken to the hospital and Clark arrives to find Lois and the resident psychiatrist discussing the stress Chloe's been under between school and her job at the Daily Planet. The Doctor has an orderly move Chloe from the emergency room to a bed and Clark quietly enters her room and asks Chloe what happened.
But Chloe tells Clark she can't remember anything except passing out and then waking up on the bathroom floor bleeding. Clark asks Chloe if she should tell the doctor about her mother's mental problems and she says no, and then tells Clark she wasn't trying to kill herself and she thinks she remembers someone being in the bathroom with her though Lois saw no one. She also tells Clark she doesn't want anyone to think she's anything like her mother who she's estranged from and has psychiatric problems. Martha Kent's in the kitchen back at the Kent farm looking over reams of paperwork when Lionel Luthor knocks at the back door and comes in. Martha tells Lionel to call next time he's going to come by and she drops the paperwork as he enters. As he helps her pick up all the papers he notices they're all about budgets and public works projects and he asks her if she's going to take over Jonathan Kent's state senate seat that he won in the election on the night he died. She says she doesn't know and hasn't made up her mind yet.
Lionel tells Martha Kent that he lost his wife and that someday like he did, she too will regain a semblance of normalcy in her life despite her losing Jonathan Kent. Chloe is sleeping in her hospital room when she hears a girl's voice coming from the bathroom pleading for someone to please help her. She enters the bathroom and suddenly sees the same ghostly girl we saw earlier holding her hands out to Chloe and her wrists are cut just like Chloe's were. Lana comes in and finds Chloe who now sees bloody footprints leading out of her room down the hospital hallway. But Lana sees none of this and the doctor and the orderly from earlier take Chloe back to her bed and she is sedated while she pleads with Lana to help her. Lana goes to see Lex Luthor at his mansion and as she enters he's telling someone over the phone to track down Professor Milton Fine who's disappeared and who we know was secretly Clark's Kryptonian nemesis Brainiac.
Lana tells Lex about Chloe's problems and he promises to get Chloe the best doctors money can buy to help her back to sanity. Lex goes to the hospital and tells Clark he's having Chloe flown to Belle Reve sanitarium and reassures Clark he'll do what he can for Chloe. But Clark instead takes Chloe from the hospital to Lois' apartment and Lois isn't pleased with Clark's actions. He and Lois argue over what's best for Chloe and she awakens while they talk. Chloe asks Lois to make her a cappuccino as the drugs they sedated her with still have her feeling groggy. As Clark talks to Chloe about how worried he is about her she again insists she's not like her mother. But suddenly the ghostly girl appears again and again only Chloe can see her. She follows the girl as she enters the bathroom and then vanishes into the wall behind the mirror. Chloe tells Clark the girl is in the wall and to please use his x-ray vision to look through the wall for her. He does so and is shocked to see that there is a girl's skeleton inside the bathroom wall!
He smashes through the mirror exposing the skeleton and we see it's wearing a bracelet with a kryptonite stone in it and Clark stumbles painfully from the room. Chloe is compelled to touch the bracelet and as she does so the ghostly spirit of the girl goes from the skeleton and into Chloe possessing her. Lois runs in after hearing all the noise, and when she sees the skeleton she is just as shocked as Clark was and she asks Chloe if she's all right. Lois doesn't know that she's now talking to the dead girl as Clark calls the Sheriff's office and tells them of his grisly discovery. He takes Chloe back to his house and Chloe tells Clark that the lightning striking the Talon awakened the girl's spirit after all these years, and they have to find the man who did these terrible things and make him pay for it. Clark tells Chloe to get some sleep and goes to talk to Lois who tells Clark that the Sheriff said they've found more bodies and the dead girls name was Gretchen Winters.
While Clark and Lois talk, the possessed Chloe(Gretchen) goes through her own purse to find out who she is and finds Chloe's license to carry a stun gun and her address in Metropolis. She runs off just before Clark and Lois come in to tell her about the dead girl and they're shocked to see Chloe has fled. Lana is awakened in her dorm room by the possessed Chloe who takes her stun gun and tries to leave as Lana tells her that she and Lex have been looking for her since she vanished from the hospital. Chloe goes out into the hall and runs right into Lex who tells her he's taking her to Belle Reve and Chloe uses the stun gun on Lex knocking him down. Just as she runs off Clark arrives and Lex tells him he was wrong to take Chloe from the hospital. Lois is back at her apartment using incense to try and clear the foul odor from the bodies that have been found when who should arrive but the orderly from the hospital!
He says is name is Michael and he tells Lois he liked Chloe and was looking for her to help her. Then he starts to look around the apartment and when Lois asks why he says his father used to run the place when it was a theater ten years ago. Just the way he's acting makes Lois nervous so she tells him she's busy and tells him he'll have to leave as she has things to do. He goes out the door and Lois immediately tries to call the police but Michael suddenly appears behind her and puts a rag containing chloroform over her mouth and Lois passes out from the chemical. Next we see Chloe/Gretchen appear outside Michael's house and she rings his bell and when he sees its Chloe he lets her in. Chloe/Gretchen starts to tell Michael all about how he befriended Gretchen years ago and then he killed her. Michael wonders how she knows all these details and then he grabs Chloe by the neck. Chloe uses the stun gun and knocks Michael to the floor and then beats him over the head with a metal candelabra she grabs.
But then she hears Lois yelling from the cellar for help and goes to find her tied in a chair and begins to free her. But Michael has revived and he knocks out Chloe and ties her up too! When Chloe awakens Michael begins to tell her and Lois about all the terrible things he's done to women over the years. He takes out another kryptonite bracelet that he says his father made while he told him bad things about his mother and his father then killed her too. He also tells Lois he knows Chloe's mother ended up in an asylum and then he puts the bracelet on Chloe/Gretchen's wrist and tells them he learns the girl's secrets then kills them to give them peace. Then he takes out a hunting knife and cutting one of Lois' ropes he gives her the knife and tells her to cut her own wrists. When Lois refuses he takes a gun and pointing it at Chloe he tells Lois to slit her wrists or he'll shoot Chloe! Back at the Daily Planet Clark is looking at old files about Gretchen's murder and in a picture with the article he sees Michael the orderly standing in the middle of a candlelight vigil for the girl!
He then looks up Michaels address and seeing its right in Smallville he speeds to the house. In the cellar Michael is about to shoot Chloe but Lois takes the knife and throws it at Michael striking him in the upper chest. Michael though injured knocks Lois over and stuns her, and then pulls the knife from his chest. He heads over to kill Lois for hurting him when Clark speeds into the room and heat-visions the knife so Michael will drop it. But when Clark grabs Michael, the kryptonite bracelet on Chloe/Gretchen's wrist weakens him and Michael knocks Clark down with a punch. He is about to stab Clark with the knife when Chloe tells him she's really Gretchen and she needs to die first to be released from all her pain. He walks over to her and is about to stab her when Chloe/Gretchen grabs his hand and with a green glow from the bracelet her spirit jumps from Chloe to Michael. Then Gretchen forces Michael to take the knife and stab himself in the heart killing him!
Chloe then sees Gretchen's spirit leave Michael's body and with a smile Gretchen finally disappears forever, her revenge for her murder complete. When Lois frees herself and Chloe, Clark revives and asks what happened and Chloe says that Gretchen got what she came back from the dead for. Later at the farm, Lana drops in to talk to Clark and tells him she went to Lex for help as a friend and Clark remarks she used to come to him for help. Lana tells Clark she still loves him but she doesn't even know how to talk to Clark anymore and then she leaves. Clark enters the house and tells Martha Kent she should take the state senate seat that Jonathan Kent won as it's what Jonathan would have wanted and Martha Kent agrees to do so. Then he goes to the Daily Planet to see Chloe and the story in the paper proclaims that Michael committed suicide over his murdering all those girls. Clark then asks Chloe if she does know where her mother is and she says yes she does, and Clark tells her even thought she left Chloe at a young age she should go to see her as she's the only mother Chloe will ever have.
Despite her fears, the next day Chloe goes to the institution where her mother stays. She sees her standing across the room staring out a window and she slowly approaches her. She stands in front of her mother and says simply "Mom". He mother puts a hand on Chloe's cheek tenderly and the two then embrace. As Chloe cries in relief, both her and her mother's old wounds begin to heal as mother and daughter start the road back to being a family together again after all these years.

Our Story:
A scientist enters a high tech lab and we see a sleeping young man strapped into an upright cage. The man opens the cage and then he injects a serum into the young man's neck and he slowly awakens. The doctor calls the young man Victor and he tells him he's sorry for what's been done to him. He hands him a photo of a young lady and tells him it was all he could save and Victor thanks the doctor. But as soon as Victor steps off the platform, a cable that was connected to the back of his neck falls away and an alarm blares and the doctor tells Victor to get out of there fast. Men in black paramilitary gear enter the room with rifles and a man in a suit tells them to get Victor back. They chase him down long corridors until Victor finds a door to the outside and runs down a gangway towards steel doors 4 inches thick. But when the pursuers get there they find the doors bent outwards like cheap aluminum and Victor runs through a parking lot and into the streets of Metropolis. Lana drives around the corner and doesn't see Victor until the last second and slams into the young man and her SUV comes to an instant halt. When the stunned Lana looks up she has a cut on her forehead but the young man has the entire engine compartment crushed around him but he is unhurt, and Lana and he gape at each other in shock!
Victor takes Lana to the emergency to room to have her head wound looked at and then he leaves refusing to answer any of her questions. She calls Clark who arrives almost immediately explaining he was in Metropolis visiting Chloe at the Daily Planet. She tells him about Victor and Clark chases him out to the front of the hospital where he confronts him about the accident. Clark recognizes him as Victor Stone who used to play football for Met High and Victor also recognizes Clark from his short stint as quarterback for Smallville. But Clark also remembers reading that Victor died some time ago! When Victor tries to leave, Clark holds his arm but Victor tosses Clark through the air and into a wall which Clark smashes up but he gets up as unharmed as Victor was when hit by Lana. While Victor is amazed at Clark's resilience, Clark looks under his skin with his x-ray vision and sees that other then the right side of his head and his left arm, Victor is completely robotic! Back at the Kent farm we see Martha Kent reading a headline about her taking over Jonathan's senate seat now that he's passed away. She hears a thump on the front porch and when she opens the door she finds a package with a portable DVD player inside it and she puts it on the counter and pushes play.
She sees Lana when she was tied up in the warehouse by the rouge police who were searching for Brainiac's spaceship. Then her eyes widen in shock at what she sees next although we don't see it from our point of view. Suddenly the phone rings and someone demands money from Martha to keep what's on the DVD secret and she agrees to a payoff and hangs up. Then Lionel Luthor comes to the door reminding Martha they're supposed to attend a conference together in Topeka that day and she begs off saying she'll have to reschedule. Lionel notices the package with her name on the counter and asks if she needs any help but Martha Kent refuses and Lionel leaves. Clark takes Victor to the loft in his barn and Victor reads the newspaper article about him and his family being killed in a car accident on a snow covered road. He says he passed out and when he woke up he was in a lab run by a company called Cyntechnics and they were making him into a cyborg, part man and part machine. Victor asks Clark if he's bionic also because of his special abilities and Clark says no, he's just different. Victor shows Clark the picture of his girlfriend Katherine who he was going to marry and Victor is afraid she'd be repelled by what he's been turned into. Clark tells Victor he's never told Lana about himself and he doesn't want Cyntechnics to get control of Victor again.
He tells Victor to stay in the loft while he gets Chloe to investigate Cyntechnics. He goes to the Daily Planet and he and Lana listen as Chloe researches and tells them that Cyntechnics is running a project called Machina which is about using mechanical prosthetics to replace severed limbs. She also discovers that Luthorcorp owns Cyntechnics and Clark goes to Lex's mansion to confront him about it. Lex tells Clark he obtains hundreds of smaller companies every year and he had no knowledge about the experiments on Victor and thought he had died just as everyone had. Clark and Lex part saying they'll each look into the matter. Lana visits Victor in the barn and tells him to tell his girlfriend the truth about himself and Victor decides to go find her. But just as he's leaving the Cyntechnic goons arrive and knock Lana down stunning her and then they shoot Victor in the shoulder. Clark zooms in the room and knocks the men out and helps Lana up as she comes to. But Victor is leaking black liquid from his wound and he rips his artificial skin away exposing his right shoulder and arm's bionics and tells them the leak is from his power cell and if it's not fixed quickly he will die!
Chloe tells Clark she's found out that a Dr. Alistair Krieg is the man running the Machina project and that he is considered a rogue in the scientific community and might be running the project without Lex's knowledge. Then she and Clark find out that the man who freed Victor is a Dr. Hong and Clark goes to his house to get help for Victor. But when he arrives at Dr. Hong's house he finds the man dead inside his car from carbon monoxide poisoning! Then Lex shows up and tells Clark he was tracking down Dr. Hong who he thinks either killed himself or Dr. Krieg had him killed because of his knowledge about Krieg's obsession to create a living machine. Clark calls Lana and she tells Victor that Dr. Hong is dead and Victor decides to go see his girlfriend Katherine to say goodbye before he dies. He arrives at Katherine's apartment but Krieg is waiting for him with his men and he tells Victor he can see Katherine, but first he must return to the lab to be repaired. After Victor leaves with Krieg's men, who should come out of the shadows of the darkened apartment to talk to Krieg but Lex Luthor!
Martha Kent meets with the blackmailer to pay him off but they're interrupted by the arrival of Lionel Luthor and the blackmailer flees. Lionel tells Martha Kent he knows she's being blackmailed and he doesn't care what the secret is he just wants to help her. Victor wakes up back in the lab and Dr. Krieg tells him his arm has been repaired and then Lex arrives and tells Victor he only wanted to save his life not hurt him. But Victor sees Krieg preparing a microchip for installation in his brain and Lex says it will help control his emotions so they don't conflict with his bionics. Victor tells Lex he just wants to let Krieg turn him into a robot but Lex insists he just wants to help Victor and he leaves. Clark arrives back in Smallville and Lana tells him that Victor left to see Katherine and they agree that Victor has probably been taken captive again by Cyntechnics. Dr. Krieg is about to drill a hole in Victor's head to install the microchip when Clark speeds into the room and knocks Krieg and his technicians out. He and Victor flee the room and then both run to the roof and jump several stories down to the parking lot and run off. When Krieg and his men finally get there, all they find is the smashed pavement where Clark and Victor jumped down.
Later Clark confronts Lex about the fact he was there and saw what Krieg was about to do to Victor, but Lex tells Clark that Victor was under anesthesia and must be confused about what he thought was happening. He also tells Clark that helping Victor was worth it and that all miracles have a price, but as far as he's concerned the matter is finished. Victor is back at the farm and Clark tells him he won't let Lex bother him anymore and then Lana arrives with Katherine. The two young lovers happily reunite and Victor tells Katherine he has a long story to tell her about what's happened to him and Katherine tells him they have plenty of time and the two leave. Lionel Luthor sees Martha Kent and tells her the blackmailer was a security guard that worked at the warehouse we saw Lana in and that he's made sure he won't bother her again. He tells her it might be dangerous for her reputation as a new Senator to associate with him but Martha Kent is grateful for his help and tells him she won't forget his friendship with her.
Lana tells Clark it was good to see Victor and Katherine willing to trust each other with the truth but that Clark and she can't seem to reach that point between them and their relationship is stalled because of it. She tells Clark she still loves him and he says he loves her too and always will no matter what happens. But Lana knows Clark is still hiding something from her and she leaves the barn with disappointment in her eyes. That night in Metropolis we see Lionel Luthor paying off the man who he had actually sent to blackmail Martha Kent to win her friendship by 'saving' her from the man. As Martha Kent burns the DVD in the fireplace at the farmhouse in Smallville, we see Lionel watching the same DVD in Metropolis. And it shows Clark running from the explosion with Lana in his arms at super-speed just ahead of the blast. As he watches he says aloud "Your secret is safe with me, Kal-El", showing all of us that Lionel knows the truth about Clark!

Then he takes a tube marked biohazard from the one dead man's briefcase and uses his heat-vision to set the entire hut ablaze. As he super-speeds away from the scene, the entire structure and all inside are destroyed as the hut explodes into a giant fireball!
Clark and Lana are at the Talon coffee shop and Lana invites Clark back to her dorm room for a night of romance, but Clark is still afraid he would harm her with his tremendous strength and turns her down. She tells him she'll wait until he's ready and leaves. Then a young woman who calls herself Simone walks up wearing an exotic blue gem around her neck. As soon as Clark looks into the stone, he is hypnotized and agrees to do whatever Simone says! They go outside in the alley behind the Talon and are kissing ardently when Lois pulls up and is shocked at Clark's behavior. Lex Luthor has called Lana to his mansion and once there he tells her he's tracked down Milton Fine, Brainiac's human identity, to the Honduras and he is flying there to try and find the spaceship that vanished from his warehouse the same day Fine vanished from Smallville. Lana offers to go but Lex refuses to put her in danger.
Clark has taken Simone back to the farmhouse and he serves her pie and when she says she wants champagne to drink, he super-speeds away to Metropolis and is back in seconds with it. Simone realizes Clark has amazing powers and commands him to call Lana to the house for him to tell Lana that Simone is his new girlfriend. Back in Metropolis, Lois is filling Chloe in on Clark's sudden affair with Simone and she wants to tell Lana that Clark is betraying their relationship. Lana arrives and they hesitate to let her know about Simone and that's when Clark calls Lana to come back to Smallville as he has something to tell her so she leaves. At the farm, Clark takes Simone up to his barn loft and he shows her he has super-strength also and then she commands him to make love to her and they both strip down to their underwear and begin to kiss passionately. And that's when Lana arrives and is shocked by what she sees. Simone commands Clark to run after Lana and tell her he loves Simone now and Clark does exactly what he's told. When Clark tells her, Lana runs from the barn and collapses in tears at Clark's betrayal!
Afterwards Simone goes to Lex's mansion where he appears on a TV screen and teleconferences from his jet with Simone and we realize she is working for Lex! He asks Simone if she has discovered anything unusual about Clark but she doesn't expose Clark's secrets to Lex, but tells him she has managed to break up Clark and Lana. Then Lex tells her he wants her to use her hypnotic stone on Milton Fine and when she hesitates, Lex reminds her he's blackmailing her with evidence that will imprison her for life. After the call is ended, Lex is told by one of his men they've found out new information about Milton Fine. Chloe goes to the farm and confronts Clark about his actions and how he's hurt Lana and he tells her his relationship with Lana never could have worked as he had to keep his abilities a secret from her. He tells Chloe he's in love with Simone and to mind her own business. Chloe goes into the house and meets Simone and pretends to her that she's happy that Clark has found someone he's happy with and when Simone's distracted, Chloe slips Simone's license from her wallet to use to investigate her.
Lex finds Milton Fine/Brainiac in the Honduras and tells him he's discovered that Fine is actually a covert agent for a secret government branch and Brainiac plays along letting Lex think he's right. He tells Lex he's there trying to find the spaceship as the government is worried about dangerous aliens invading the Earth, and they're hoping Lex will help with the development of a weapon to fight the aliens. Lex says he will if he's given full access to everything the government knows and Fine tells Lex that may not be possible. Chloe tells Lois she's found out that Simone's father was a world famous hypnotist that she believes Simone killed to get access to the stone she wears. It seems it dates back centuries and has mystical hypnotic powers that never wear off. Lois and Chloe head for Smallville separately and Chloe takes a piece of kryptonite with her in case she needs it to stop Clark. Fine shows Lex a native boy who has a carving of the spaceship the boy's father made after he saw the ship fall into the jungle. But the man was mysteriously incinerated and Fine tells Lex the aliens pose a threat to the entire planet and must be stopped and then Lex leaves to fly back to America.
Lois arrives at the Kent farmhouse to find Clark and Simone getting ready to leave for California forever. When Lois tries to interfere, Simone tells Clark to knock Lois out and he does it with a tap of his super-powered finger. Ma Kent comes into the room and Simone uses the stone on her and tells her to use any means possible to stop Lois from following them. She also commands Ma Kent to wish them luck and to never miss Clark and she obeys completely wishing them a good trip. Simone says that before they leave Smallville she wants Clark to stop at Lex's mansion with her and kill Lex, and Clark happily agrees to do just that! Lois wakes up to find Ma Kent holding a shotgun on her and Ma tells Lois she'll kill her to stop her from following Clark and Simone. Luckily, Chloe arrives and knocks Ma Kent out ending the danger. Lois tells Chloe she thinks she heard Simone mention Lex's mansion as their next stop and before Lois can join her, Chloe runs off to try and stop Clark.
Lex arrives at his mansion to find Clark and Simone waiting and Clark tosses Lex across the room and Lex thinks the hypnotic stone has given him this great strength. Lex tells Clark that Simone killed her father and she commands Clark to not believe him and then she tells Clark to kill Lex and make him suffer while doing so. Clark lifts Lex into the air by the neck with one hand and slowly chokes him, but Chloe arrives and slips the kryptonite into Clark's pocket rendering him weak and he collapses releasing Lex. Lex grabs a gun from his briefcase but Simone uses the stone on him commanding him to shoot Chloe and then kill himself. But as Chloe and Lex struggle with the gun, it goes off hitting the stone on Simone's neck killing her and releasing everyone from its power forever as it shatters! Chloe grabs the kryptonite back from Clark's pocket while Lex is still dazed and Clark gets up shocked by all that's happened. The next day Chloe tells Clark now he can make up with Lana as Chloe filled Lana in on everything that happened, but Clark tells her that them breaking up is probably for the best. All he's ever done because of his secrets is hurt Lana and this will give her the opportunity to move on with her life once and for all.
Chloe warns Clark if he goes ahead with this plan, it will be the end of he and Lana forever and he still thinks it's the right thing to do. When Lana meets Clark at his loft, he tells her his feelings for her have changed and he no longer loves her. She tells Clark she's through with him forever and walks out of the barn and his life. Then we see Brainiac's ship in the Honduran jungle as strange black liquid oozes from it and forms into four Brainiacs! One of then looks at the other three and says, "We need more samples", and all four race off into the jungle in different directions as super-speed! Back at the farmhouse Clark tells Ma Kent about his breakup with Lana and Ma tells Clark that despite the fact he loves her, that maybe deep down he realized that Lana wasn't the right one for him. Ma then tells Clark that she hopes the hatred this will cause in Lana for him won't drive her to do anything they'll all regret. Lana goes to see Lex and tells him about the breakup and she says she's glad she doesn't have to put up with anymore of Clark and his constant secrecy. When she tells Lex she feels stupid he tells her she's not stupid, she just put her trust in the wrong person. And we see in his eyes he's glad that at least that part of his plan with Simone worked to his advantage.

Our Story:
Lana is nervously waiting in her dorm room at Metropolis University until she bolts from her bed and grabs a wad of money from her closet. She runs to a old building which once was used as a cafeteria but when she enters she meets two people named Lance and Ally and we see the building is being used as a makeshift laboratory. She hands Lance her entire savings of $2,000 dollars and he grabs it and fills a syringe with a green liquid that's obviously kryptonite based. She tells Lance she wants to stay under as long as two minutes and he tells her that's too long but Ally points to an amber vial stating that its contents will bring Lana back in time. He injects Lana and she suddenly enters a foggy realm and sees her dead parents! She tells them of her pain over she and Clark breaking up and her Mother reassures her they'll always be there for her. Just as she's about to hug her Mother she's pulled back from death's door by Lance who has injected her with the second serum. Even though she's just technically died for a couple of minutes she tells Lance she wants to do it again longer next time!
Chloe has found a newspaper on the internet that tells of an epidemic occurring in the Honduras and in the front page's picture she spots the face of Milton Fine, who we know to really be the evil artificial intelligence from Krypton named Brainiac. She calls Clark who speeds to the room in seconds from Smallville and he sees that it is indeed Fine in the photo's background and Chloe cites a mysterious source of hers that led her to the newspaper. Just then a haggard looking Lana is bought into the room by Ally and Clark nervously says hello to Lana and leaves. Chloe notes Lana's condition and asks if she's all right and Lana insists everything's fine. Outside we see Clark take off on a super-speed run that takes him all the way to the town in the Honduras in Central America known as Sierra de la Botija where we saw Lex Luthor and Milton Fine meet in the last episode. He starts asking the villagers if any of them have seen the man in the picture from the newspaper.
At home, Clark's mom is giving a speech in her new position as a state senator of Kansas. After she ends her speech and the press leave, Lionel Luthor appears from the crowd and asks if he can take her to the dinner scheduled at the Governor's tomorrow night and offers to help school her in the treacherous waters of politics. She tells Lionel she's done her research on her opponents but agrees to go with him to the dinner after reminding Lionel that their relationship will only ever be that of friends and nothing more. In the Honduras, Clark has found a young boy working on a wood carving in the exact shape of Brainiac's ship so he knows he's close to finding him. In Metropolis, Lana uses her school electronic student's card to get her into the campus medical building and she tells Lance she wants to try seeing her parents again. Lance tells her this time it will cost $5,000 dollars and Lana says she'll get the money. Lex is entering his mansion and he hears someone breaking into his office. He grabs a gun and enters the room and tackles the would be thief and is shocked to discover its Lana!
Lana tells Lex about the whole scheme of needing money for the chemical the med student developed to see your dead relatives again by dying and then being revived and he tells Lana she looks and acts like a junkie. He leaves the room for a second and when he does Lana grabs his Porsche's keys and runs off with his car. In the Honduras, the young boy has led Clark to where he saw the spaceship, but when they get to the spot all that's left is a black impression in the ground where the ship had once been. Chloe gets a call from Lex looking for Lana and then she finds a book in their room about near death experiences and Ally's dorm room number. She goes and confronts Ally demanding to know what's going on and Ally tells her about the meteor rock based compound that Lana's been using and Ally had too. Suddenly Ally begins to choke up blood and just as Chloe calls 911 to report the emergency, Ally drops dead on her dorm room's bed! Lana goes to the med lab and Lance tells her Ally died from too much use of the drug and Lana offers him Lex's Porsche for one more trip to the other side. But Lex shows up citing the fact all expensive cars have GPS units that made it possible for him to find Lana.
Lance tries to leave the room and he and Lex struggle with Lex knocking Lance down. Lana uses the distraction to grab a vial of the death chemical and runs from the room. As Lex follows after her, Lance stabs him in the back with a needle filled with the deadly chemical and Lex collapses! As Lance runs from the room, Lex awakens in the other realm and sees his mother playing the piano. She tells Lex he's really dead and she tried to warn him once before that the wrong choices he's making will only put blood on his hands from all the deaths he'll cause. (As seen in the episode "Lexmas") Lex looks down to see a black glove on his right hand and then he's pulled away from the void to awaken to Chloe who has injected him with the revival chemical saving his life. Lex tells him she was tracking Lana and that bought her to the lab where she found Lex dead on the floor. As Lex is taken away by an ambulance that Chloe called for, Clark arrives and Chloe fills him in on the situation. She then uses her laptop to track where Lana might be by looking for where her student ID card is being used on campus.
Lana has gone to the medical lab on campus in search of a needle to inject herself with the chemical, but Lance has figured she would there and knocks her down and then fills a needle with enough of the chemical to kill her and then he'll just let her stay dead this time. But as he's about to inject her, Clark speeds into the room from behind knocking Lance across the lab. He turns to help Lana up and Lance comes at Clark with the needle filled with the kryptonite based liquid which weakens Clark and Lance injects Clark with the deadly juice! As Clark falls to the floor, Lance grabs an electronic bone cutting saw and tells Lana he's going to kill her, but Lana grabs a beaker and smashes it across Lance's head stunning him and causing him to fall on the saw he's dropped which cuts into his chest killing him! Lana runs to Clark who had died and he awakens in what appears to be the barn back home on the Kent farm. Then in a bright light from outside the barn doors appears his dead father Jonathan Kent!
Clark runs to his father and they happily embrace as Clark tells him that he caused Pa's death by Jor-El bringing Clark back to life at the high price of his adopted father's life. Pa tells Clark not to worry as his life was a full and happy one and he was glad to die for Clark's sake. He then tells Clark that Lionel Luthor knows all about Clark and his powers and he must return to protect his loved ones and people everywhere. He also tells Clark he must return to the living world as he has a great role to fulfill as a symbol of peace and justice for the world. Then as Clark starts back to our world of the living, Pa tells him he'll always be watching over him. Clark bolts awake on the med lab floor to see a worried but now relieved Lana over him. He races back to the farm to find his mother leaving for the dinner with Lionel Luthor who Pa warned Clark about his knowing all of Clark's secrets. Before he can warn Ma Kent she tells Clark she'll talk to him tomorrow and as they leave, Lionel makes a point of calling him Clark sarcastically, signifying he indeed knows all about his real origins.
Chloe and Clark meet at the Daily Planet and she figures that Clark's dying somehow neutralized the kryptonite in his system allowing him to return from death. Then Clark tells her that both Milton Fine and the ship were gone from the Honduras, and that Pa warned him that Lionel Luthor knows all his secrets as Chloe already does. Chloe then shocks Clark by telling him that it was Lionel acting as her source which steered them to Fine being in the Honduras and Clark thinks that the elder Luthor is playing them all for fools. Lex is visited at his mansion by Lana who apologizes for her actions while using the drug and Lex lies to Lana and tells her when he saw his mother that she said she was proud of the man he's becoming. Later at her dorm room, Clark sees Lana and she tells Clark she has always felt alone growing up without her parents and she took the risks just to feel their warmth and comfort one more time. Then she swears to never be that dependent again, no matter what she's searching for. Clark tells her all he wants is for her to be happy and she reassures him she will and he leaves. We can only wonder if now she'll seek comfort with Lex Luthor who is becoming more and more manipulative with Lana as time passes.

Our Story:
Martha Kent's senatorial chief of staff is talking to her on the phone about upcoming issues and then she hangs up and tells her foster daughter Maddie to stop her drawing and come to the dinner table. When Maddie doesn't and her mother insists, suddenly a water pitcher shakes and shatters unexpectedly. The mother realizes that this was no accident and she tells Maddie that all the broken glass incidents the two have encountered in their past aren't accidents and she knows Maddie is causing them somehow. She sends Maddie to her room telling her she's calling the foster agency as she can't take this anymore. But when Maddie goes to her room and hides under the bed, all the glass in the kitchen begins to shatter and fly into pieces. And finally one giant mirror in the living room shatters and we hear the woman's screams as she is killed by the flying shards of glass!
Next we see that Ma Kent is being given temporary custody of the Maddie and she and Clark try to understand how the tragedy occurred. Clark sees Maddie drawing and he makes a funny picture of himself to draw a smile from Maddie who Ma Kent says hasn't spoken a word since her natural mother's death when Maddie was three. Lex Luthor and Lana are returning to her dorm room from a dinner where they've been going over classified files that Lex has obtained which concern the alien threat Milton Fine, secretly the evil artificial intelligence from Krypton called Brainiac, told Lex about in the episode "Hypnotic". They both tell each other how much they've come to trust each other when Chloe comes in and interrupts the moment as she shares the dorm room with Lana. Clark has gotten Maddie to trust him to the point where she actually starts to talk to him at last. But when Lois arrives to help out with Maddie, the little girl gets upset and suddenly all the light bulbs in the barn shatter and Maddie runs into the house.
Clark follows her to the house where Maddie admits that ever since she was little she could somehow break glass, but that she can't do it through walls and wasn't responsible for her foster mother's death. Lois nervously agrees to watch Maddie while Clark goes to meet Chloe and look into Maddie's past. Chloe discovers that Maddie's past shows a number of shattering glass incidents and that the child's birth Mother was killed by shattering glass from a car windshield so Chloe is as convinced as Lois that the child is dangerous. Lois tries to take Maddie on a picnic at the farm but she runs back into the barn where she gets upset and all the glass jars and items in the barn start to tremble. Lois calms Mattie down but then a man Named Frank Colbert shows up from the child protection services and tells Maddie he's there to take her into custody. Lex, meanwhile, is receiving communications from different sources saying they're spotting Milton Fine/Brainiac at different places around the world at the same time.
Then Chloe visits Lex accusing him of taking advantage of Lana as she's just broken up with Clark and she warns Lex she'll come after him if he hurts Lana, but Lex simply insults her and she storms out. As Maddie is taken away by Mr. Colbert, suddenly a man appears we haven't seen before and all the glass in Colbert's car explodes killing Colbert and causing Lois to be hit in the shoulder by flying fragments. When Clark gets to the hospital where Lois was taken for treatment, he and Lois try to figure out who the mysterious stranger is that's kidnapped Maddie and Lois assures Clark that the police are actively looking for her. It seems the man who kidnapped Maddie is her birth father who's been locked up for all of Maddie's 12 years of life. His mother kept Maddie away from him and he tells her that all he wants is for he and Maddie to be a family again. He forms a butterfly out of glass for Maddie and she shatters it being upset and frightened of him and he reforms it showing us that Maddie inherited her powers from him. Chloe finds out that Tyler McKnight is Maddie's birth father and he was in a stained glass shop during the first meteor shower and that he gained the ability to control glass. But after robbing a jewelry store of diamonds, he was caught and sent to Belle Reve Sanitarium and he was a model prisoner and was just legally released.
Chloe tells Clark that McKnight lived with his mother in Smallville before being caught so he heads for that address where Tyler has a stained glass studio in the basement. Clark gets there and tells Tyler's mother that she has a granddaughter she never knew existed as he was sent to prison before she was born for stealing the seven diamonds which were never recovered. Clark recognizes one of the stained glass art pieces as a duplicate of one hanging in the Talon coffee shop and rightly figures that's where Tyler hid the missing diamonds. And that's where Tyler and Maddie are at that moment. He shows her the diamonds in the glass he hid in plain sight all these years in the art piece and uses his powers to pull them from the piece and give them to Maddie who refuses to take them knowing he stole them and that he killed her mother and Mr. Colbert. Clark speeds in the room and throws McKnight away from Maddie smashing him into a glass showcase, knocking him out. Lana sees Chloe at the Daily Planet and tells her she's angry with her for talking to Lex and Chloe warns Lana that Lex is a predator and not to be trusted but Lana wants Chloe to mind her own business.
Clark brings Lois home from the hospital to her apartment over the Talon coffee shop, and Lois feels badly that she thought it was Maddie doing all the killing with glass. Clark tells Lois that Maddie's grandmother is adopting her and she'll have a stable home. Then Ma Kent comes in and tells Lois she wants her to be her new chief of staff since she did so well as Pa Kent's campaign manager and Lois accepts the job. But what none of them know is that while being escorted back to Belle Reve, Tyler McKnight has escaped by using his guard's glasses to kill the man! Clark tells Maddie she's going to be happy with her grandmother and that they both had birth father's who weren't good people, but Clark tells Maddie that he considers his adopted father to be his real dad and he was a wonderful man. At first Maddie gets upset and glass in the house starts to tremble and shake, but Clark reassures her and she calms down and controls her powers. That night Clark and Maddie come downstairs to find the front door window shattered, and Clark runs to the barn to find Ma Kent being held hostage by McKnight who's holding a shard of glass up to Ma's throat pinning her against a barn beam.
Clark uses his heat vision to blast the shard of glass away from Ma's throat and she runs away from the barn. Then McKnight shatters all the glass in the barn into thousands of pieces and send it hurtling towards Clark. But suddenly Maddie appears and takes the glass and turns it into several sharp missiles and surrounds her father with the deadly hovering shards. Clark tells her not to hurt him as then she'll become the monster her father turned out to be and just because he's destroyed his life doesn't mean she should destroy her life too. She listens to Clark and drops the glass missiles and Clark embraces her as her father cowers on the barn floor like the coward he is. The next day Maddie's grandmother comes to pick her up and though she's worried about her powers, Clark tells Maddie he's only a phone call away and he'll talk to her whenever she wants. Maddie gives Clark a picture she drew of all the things on the farm she loves, and then goes to meet her new grandmother and start a new life.
Clark asks Chloe how Lana is doing and Chloe tells Clark to see for himself and that she has no intention of getting between them, and her reaction to the question raises Clark's suspicions that something is indeed going on with Lana. And he's right too as Lana at that moment is talking to Lex and they're both insisting that all they are to each other is friends when suddenly Lex kisses Lana. He quickly apologizes for that, but suddenly and passionately Lana kisses him back and then runs from the room. And with a smile Lex shows us that his plan to worm his way into Lana's affections is working perfectly!

Roles & Actors this episode:
Co-Starring: Lincoln Cole: Ian Tracey
Clark Kent: Tom Welling
Martha Kent: Annette O'Toole
Lana Lang: Kristen Kreuk
Lex Luthor: Michael Rosenbaum
Lionel Luthor: John Glover
Chloe Sullivan: Allison Mack

Our Story:
Lionel Luthor is in his limousine heading back to Metropolis when suddenly the privacy screen goes up and the car comes to a halt on the railroad tracks with a train approaching as the driver flees. A computer screen comes up and we see a man in a metallic mask telling the elder Luthor he must play the game "Hangman" and guess the correct words or the doors won't open in time for him to escape the oncoming train. Lionel frantically calls out letters as we see the train getting closer and closer. Just in time Lionel figures out the phrase is "No Mercy" and the doors unlock and Lionel jumps from the limo just as the train rams it and smashes it into pieces! Clark is complaining to Chloe about how Lionel has not only learned about his powers and origin, but that he's always hovering around Ma Kent. Chloe advises Clark that even though he hasn't told Ma that Lionel knows his secrets because she's been through so much with Pa dying, he may be endangering her even further by not telling her of Lionel's knowledge of Clark's secrets.
Lionel drops in on his son Lex who is practicing at chess and he accuses Lex of the attempt on his life. But Lex assures his father that his recent failure to reacquire control of Luthorcorp by using a company called Apex was all the satisfaction Lex needed. He also tells him that since he's let his father again work for Luthorcorp he's gained incredible profits for the company and Lex wouldn't let his father be harmed as that would hurt Luthorcorp's bottom line of profit. Convinced that Lex isn't responsible, nonetheless we notice that Lionel more and more is suffering from severe headaches. Clark finally tells Ma Kent that Lionel knows his secret and she believes he was behind the DVD she secretly received a while back that showed Clark surviving an explosion and she also tells Clark that Lionel supposedly got rid of the would be blackmailer. Clark advises her to not act out of character and she tells Clark she intends to confront him at a fundraiser they're both attending that night in Metropolis.
That night in his private office in Metropolis, Lionel has a man sweep for concealed electronic devices and the man assures him the office is clean. Lionel makes a snide remark to the man and dismisses him. Suddenly on his laptop the image of the masked man appears and remarks about how badly Lionel treats all his employees and then all the power in the office fades out. Lionel grabs a gun and stands up while the man still talks to him and suddenly from behind the masked man appears and jabs Lionel in the neck with a needle that knocks him out at once. As he falls to the floor the man explains he wants to play another game with him! Lionel awakens in a darkened cage with a grid floor and he spots a box of matches. Lighting one he is shocked to see there is a badly burnt corpse in the room with him. Electronic monitors light up with the masked man's image and he tells Lionel he's removed his shoes and he intends to ruin him just as he's been victimized by Lionel's ruthless business practices.
He points out a spigot that has a brackish liquid coming from it. He tells Lionel he must fill two buckets with the highly flammable liquid from the spigot and balance them on a rod and hang the buckets on a hook in the room. Then he lights up gas jets running under the floor grid and shows Lionel how his chauffer was the burnt corpse and when he failed to balance the buckets on the hook he burnt to death. The jets flare up and Lionel strips down to his t-shirt and pants and fills the buckets and slowly advances across the room towards the hook while he precariously keeps the buckets level so as not to spill the liquid. As this occurs, Lex is teaching Lana how to play chess and she finally breaks the silence between them and asks Lex what he thinks about how they kissed each other despite promising to stay merely friends. Lex tells Lana he'll never forget that kiss and then his cell phone rings. Lana heads back for Metropolis as Lex learns of his father's disappearance. He orders a security team to meet him at Luthorcorp headquarters and orders that it be kept secret.
Back in the room the man torments Lionel as he slowly cross the flame filled room towards the hook while he balances the buckets. The masked man tells him he knows the elder Luthor had his parents killed for the insurance money to gain his fortune and Lionel denies it. He just makes it to the hook and slowly lowers the pole with the buckets onto the hook as flames erupt around him. A door opens and Lionel dives through it just in time to escape death by fire. He hits the next room's floor and lights and other monitors come on with the masked man telling him this next game will require a partner. And Lionel and we are shocked to see Ma Kent trapped in a huge sealed tank made of glass! Suddenly a valve in the tank's bottom opens and water begins to fill the tank. A board lights up with letters that spell "a Toad like Fever", and the man tells Lionel to shift his perceptions and solve the puzzle quickly before Ma Kent drowns!
Chloe and Clark are discussing how Lionel Luthor's been toying with them and about knowing Clark's secrets and suddenly Lois calls and tells Clark his mother never made it to the fundraiser. They head to Luthorcorp to find Lionel and instead they meet Lex who tells them his father has gone missing too and they decide to work together despite their differences. Clark's x-ray vision spots a hidden camera in a statue in the room and he points out to Lex the statue has a chipped base. Lex knows his father wouldn't allow such an imperfection in his collection and breaks it open to discover the camera. Chloe tells the two it's very sophisticated equipment but hopefully she can turn it on and backtrack its signal. Ma and Lionel figure out the words are an anagram word puzzle and they work to solve it in time. Chloe tracks the signal to an address in Metropolis but Lex insists on taking them in his Porsche so Clark can't use his super-speed to get there faster.
Lionel knows the man wants him to fail and tank is nearly filled and Ma is now underwater! He scrambles some of the words to say "takeover" and screams aloud the answer is "Failed takeover", and then he yells "Apex" citing the failed takeover he just tried that Lex mentioned earlier. He yells "Apex!" again as Ma passes out, but just then the glass shatters and she falls to the floor and gasps for air barely surviving the near drowning. The man then directs them to a flight of stairs that they must climb as he's sending electrical shocks through the water covered floor. They run through a door which leads them into an elevator cage they're locked into. Lionel explains how he was using the Apex takeover to try and teach Lex a business lesson and several investors lost all they had when his attempted takeover failed. Ma chides Lionel telling him to simply talk to Lex father to son and he says that Lex is not like Clark and he could never measure up to Jonathan Kent.
The man now opens a hatch in the elevator cage that has a gun which he says is loaded with one bullet only. One of them must kill the other or they both will die as there is an explosive charge that will drop the elevator to the floor of the building killing them both. And they only have two minutes to decide who dies before the explosive detonates! As Chloe guides them by phone, Clark and Lex enter the building the signal's coming from to find it's a fake and they find a monitor and they see and hear everything that's happening to Lionel and Ma Kent. Lionel tells Martha that since only one of them can live, it should be Martha as Clark is a very special boy and he'll need her guidance to become the person the world needs so badly. He hands Ma the gun and holds it to his own chest and tells her to kill him, but Ma can't bring herself to do it so they both only have seconds to live. Then in a selfless gesture nobody expects from him, Lionel takes the gun and sticks it under his chin and pulls the trigger!
But the final joke is that the gun is unloaded and the man intends to kill them both anyway as the final seconds on the explosive timer count down. He appears from a door and tells them he intends to push a button setting off the charge and all this has been just so he could see Lionel suffer before he died. Then he takes off his mask and we see he's the security man who swept Lionel's office for any devices and Lionel dismissed so callously! He explains he was one of the investors who lost everything in the attempted Apex takeover and his wife and children left him and he wanted revenge for all that he's lost. Meanwhile Chloe is tracking the signal to its true source and Clark takes off at super-speed with Chloe guiding him as he runs. And when Lex finishes talking to one of his security team he's shocked to find Clark has vanished! Lionel begs the man to let Ma Kent go and tells the man that he's sorry for what he did to him. The man explains that's what he's been waiting to hear and with that he pushes the button and the elevator plunges towards the ground floor at deadly speed!
Clark has sped into the building's basement and using his x-ray vision he spots the plummeting elevator with Ma and Lionel inside. He smashes straight through a concrete wall and stands under the elevator and catches it just before it crashes into the ground and Lionel sees it happen right in front of him! Clark pulls open the cage door and Ma and Lionel exit the death trap and Lionel tells Clark it was miraculous and staggers through the hole Clark just smashed in the wall as Ma and Clark warily watch him leave. Clark takes Ma home and he tells Ma they can't trust Lionel even though it seemed as if he was willing to sacrifice himself for Ma. But Ma reminds Clark that they have no choice as now they know for sure that Lionel is aware of what Clark can do. Lex meets up later with his father in the building where Clark caught the elevator and he tells his father he heard his comment about Clark being special and that Clark vanished from where he was and moments later appeared across town. He also tells his father the elevator's brakes were disengaged by the man and he was caught in a bar right around the corner from the building.
Lionel tells Lex he's always been obsessed with Clark and that he's nothing more then an ordinary farm boy and to let it drop. But we can see by the look on Lex's face when he sees the hole smashed in the wall that that's the last thing he's going to do. That night Clark confronts Lionel in his office and Lionel even calls Clark Kal-El, his kryptonian name. He tells Clark ever since he held the crystal that built Clark's Fortress of Solitude he's known all of Clark's secrets. He insists he's not Clark's enemy and even calls him son which Clark forbids him to ever say again. Clark also tells him he doesn't care if Lionel does know all his secrets; he's to stay away from his mother or he'll make Lionel wish he had never been born. And after Clark leaves we see Lionel get another violent headache and he starts to write on a piece of paper as he writhes in pain. Something bad is happening to Lionel, and it appears as if his time is running out!

Our Story:
A heavily guarded man is being lead into court in Metropolis and Chloe is bringing Clark along on the story as she thinks he's been spending too much time alone. Clark remarks that he's worried about Lionel Luthor knowing all his secrets and revealing them to the world. After Chloe pins a press pass with Clark's name on it on his jacket, a young man who watched the guarded witness being brought into court starts across the street and unknowingly walks into the path of a speeding van. Moving so fast that no one even sees him, Clark jumps over a cab and knocks the young man out of harms way. The man sees Clark's name on his press pass and then thanks him and runs towards the courthouse. The guarded witness is bought into a room and left there to get dressed for court and after he's alone suddenly the young man Clark saved appears in the room and strangles him to death with his necktie and walks out somehow unseen. The guards find the dead witness and we see the young man has appeared in the hallway and he calmly walks away from the murder scene!
The next day Clark and Ma Kent arrive home to find Lois is playing video games on a 50" Plasma screen TV that someone has anonymously sent Clark as a gift. Clark first thinks Lionel Luthor is trying to buy his friendship but when Ma calls him he denies having anything to do with it. Clark sends the TV back and sees Chloe who tells Clark that the star witness being killed has stalled the trial indefinitely. She looks into who bought the TV but it was paid for with cash so Clark decides to question Lex about it. As Lois is Ma Kent's chief of staff she's calling fellow senators and working out in the Kent house when the young man who killed the witness appears out of nowhere in the room. He tells Lois his name is Graham and says he's a friend of Clark's and he wants to know why Clark sent the TV back to the store, and Lois says Clark's just not the type who takes expensive gifts for no reason.
Lex arrives back at his mansion and finds Lana waiting for him and he tells her he's wasted a week in Washington D.C. trying to find out who Milton Fine is since he claimed he was a covert government operative. We know he's really the evil artificial intelligence from Krypton called Brainiac. Lana and Lex tell each other how much they missed each other and then they embrace and kiss passionately. But they don't notice that Clark is standing in the doorway and he leaves as soon as he sees them kissing. Clark sees Chloe and is angry claiming Chloe knew about Lana and Lex being involved. Chloe admits she knew and wasn't happy about the situation but she tells Clark he broke up with Lana and he has no right to dictate who she sees now.
Graham drops in on Clark who's moping over his breakup with Lana by staying up in his barn loft retreat. Graham invites Clark to the city for dinner as thanks for Clark saving his life and Clark arrives at Graham's to discover a party in full swing and Lois is Graham's date! Graham has arranged a date for Clark but he refuses the girl's advances and starts to leave the party. Graham tells Clark he's obviously not over his breakup and maybe he can help get her and Clark back together. Clark explains she's seeing Lex who used to be his friend and Graham tells Clark it may work out for him yet as Clark leaves. That night Lex is entering his mansion and he has the oddest feeling that he's not alone. And he's right as out of thin air we see Graham appear behind him and he slips a rope garrote around Lex's neck and starts to strangle Lex. They stagger into the next room and Lana comes into the room to see Lex passing out and then Graham disappears right in front of her. She calls for security and they rush Lex to Smallvile Medical Center at once.
Clark arrives to find Lana comforting Lex and she tells Clark Lex will recover but it was close. Then she lies and says she was returning some books to Lex when she came upon the attack and the tension between Lana and Clark is obvious as they talk. Lana describes the attacker and Clark realizes it was Graham. What he doesn't know is at that moment Graham is arranging another date with Lois and he's impressing her with his wealth that he claims he makes by being a corporate headhunter. Clark goes to Graham's apartment in Metropolis and confronts him and Graham doesn't deny it was he that tried to kill Lex. Clark tells Graham he's taking him to the police but Graham picks up a lamp and swings it at Clark and it breaks like a toy on Clark's arm. Graham tells Clark he's not the only one with a secret and then he vanishes right in front of Clark. Clark goes to talk to Chloe and they reason that since Graham told Clark in the loft he had been to Smallville before, that he must have gotten his invisibility power from meteors rocks.
Chloe also tells Clark that Graham is probably the assassin for hire known as "The Chameleon" and he's wanted internationally and also the suspect in the courthouse murder. She reminds Clark that Graham could also know that Clark's vulnerable to the meteor rocks and what neither of them realize is that Graham is standing there invisible and listening to them talk! Then they both realize that Graham is supposed to be dating Lois that night and Clark heads for Smallville to warn Lois how dangerous Graham really is. Lois is taking a shower and she thinks someone is watching her so she gets out of the shower and opens the bathroom door to find Clark staring at her since she's still naked. She tells Clark she thought someone was watching her and he warns her about Graham and then his super-hearing picks up his heartbeat in the room. He follows the heartbeat out and downstairs to the Talon coffee shop as Lois' apartment is over it and sees a waitress get pushed aside by someone unseen. He runs into the alleyway and spots Graham standing a hundred feet away and super-speeds up and grabs him but Graham pulls out a piece of kryptonite and Clark collapses immediately!
Graham explains that the same meteor rocks that hurt Clark gave him his power as he drove through Smallville the day of the first meteor shower. And he also tells Clark that he now must kill Lana and Lex also as they saw him and could expose his identity. Clark protests but Graham's response is to use his hand holding the kryptonite to knock Clark out. Lex awakens to find Lana there and she tells him that Clark came to visit him and Lex asks her if she told Clark about their new relationship and she says she'll tell Clark when she's ready. Lex tells her it would be wrong for him to find out from someone else that they're seeing each other now. Meanwhile Chloe has met up with Lois and they go searching for Clark. Chloe calls his cell phone and they hear it ringing in the same alley behind the Talon where Chloe has parked. They run down the alley and spot Clark buried alive under some construction dirt and quickly uncover him. Chloe throws the kryptonite Graham buried alongside Clark away without Lois seeing her do so and Clark recovers and tells them that Graham's going after Lex and Lana.
Lex is in his hospital bed and we see he's received an e-mail from Milton Fine asking if the compound virus is ready and Lex sends back a "yes" to Fine so now we know they've been working together the whole time he's been missing! Then Lana comes in and gives Lex a present of new pajamas and while he thanks her we see his security guard outside the room being killed by the invisible Graham. The door swings open and Lex realizes that his killer has returned and grabbing a gun he had hidden at his bedside, he puts Lana behind him and fires randomly around the room hoping to hit the invisible Graham. And when they see blood dripping on the floor from out of nowhere we realize Lex has hit Graham with one of his shots! But Graham is still alive and he hits Lex who drops his gun and as he becomes visible we see Graham is badly wounded but he grabs Lex's gun as Lex and Lana flee the room and run down the hall. Lex realizes Graham's going to shoot so he covers Lana with his body and as Graham fires, Clark super-speeds into the corridor catching the bullet as Graham finally falls dead to the floor from Lex's shot. As Lana and Lex get up and she thanks Lex for saving her life, neither of them realize that Clark saved both of them by catching the bullet.
The next day Lois talks to Ma Kent about how she's always dating the wrong type of guy and Ma Kent tells her that maybe she has to date the wrong type before she can see who the right type of man for her is. Clark congratulates Chloe as she got her first front page by-line for her story on Graham being killed and Lex being saved and she tells Clark she has him to thank for it. Clark tells Chloe how he feels badly he saved Graham and he killed afterwards and Chloe tells Clark that heroes like policeman and fireman don't question who they save; it's just their job and they do it. Clark tells Chloe that it hurts him to see Lex and Lana together and she tells Clark that Lana has moved on with her life and maybe now he should too. That day, Lana visits Clark in his barn loft retreat and she admits that she lied to Clark about returning books to Lex and that they've been seeing each other. Clark tries to warn Lana not to trust Lex and he tells her he just doesn't want to see her get hurt. Lana tells Clark she doesn't need him to protect her and then she reminds him that they broke up because it was what he wanted. As she leaves, Clark's heart aches for the fact he's feels like he's being hurt for doing what he felt was the right thing. As the saying goes, "No good deed goes unpunished".

Our Story:
Clark comes home one night to find Ma, Chloe, and Lois are waiting with a small surprise birthday party for him. He sits down to open his presents and Lois' is a journal for him to write his thoughts in, but then he spots a card with his dead father's writing on it and opens it to find two tickets behind home plate to a Milwaukee Wolverine's baseball game. Clark's eyes tear up as Ma Kent reminds him how much his Jonathan Kent loved baseball and his loss is felt keenly by all at that moment. Afterwards Clark goes to Jonathan Kent's gravesite to thank him for the tickets and suddenly he's shocked to see Jonathan standing right there with him. And then Jonathan shocks Clark even more when he tells him that Lionel Luthor is about to do something terrible which will kill many people and the only way he can be stopped is for Clark to kill him first. Then Jonathan says goodbye and disappears into the night mist leaving a confused Clark behind!
Clark tells Ma who is skeptical but she admits that if Jonathan would ever condone a killing, that Lionel would have to be up to something terrible to warrant death. Lois runs into Lana at the Talon coffee shop and she asks Lana if she's dating Lex but Lana says she isn't, but Lois doesn't believe her. Clark tells Chloe about his ghostly encounter but she's skeptical also and can't believe that anything Lionel was up to would make Clark kill him. At that moment, Lionel Luthor is confronting his son Lex and even though he's still suffering terrible headaches, he manages to try and convince Lex to stop working with Milton Fine and to stop collecting deadly viruses with Fine's help. He warns Lex that Fine is more dangerous then Lex can imagine but Lex brushes him off and leaves. Afterwards, Lionel collapses in pain and as his eyes glaze over we see Kryptonian symbols passing in front of his mind's eye and he frantically writes some of the symbols on paper as he spasms in pain.
Clark and Chloe break into Lionel's office looking for clues but the only reference they find to anything unusual is that Lionel's been talking to the Pentagon and a local reporter about something cryptically referred to as "the weapon". Lana visits Lex who takes her to a local Luthorcorp lab where he says he and Fine have been collecting deadly viruses and Lex has developed a vaccine he feels will stop all the viruses if Fine decides to release them. He tells Lana that he has found the black spaceship and Fine was seen by it and he doesn't trust him anymore. Then Lana tells Lex that when his father was in a trance from contacting the stone from Krypton, although neither of them knows of its origin, that he revealed that there is a way to stop the beings that come from the black ship.
That night Ma Kent comes into the house to find a phone message from Lionel Luthor begging her to put their differences aside and have Clark contact him about something that's vital. After she listens to it she looks up and is shocked to see Jonathan Kent sitting in a chair! He tells her he wants her to be happy but not with someone like Lionel Luthor who has a plan which will kill thousands. He tells her what he told Clark, that Clark must kill Lionel Luthor to stop his deadly plan and then he disappears. But we see him reappear on the front porch of the house and he morphs in shape until we see that it's been Milton Fine, who we know is secretly the evil artificial intelligence from Krypton called Brainiac that has been appearing in Jonathan Kent's shape to fool Clark and Ma Kent! Ma tells Clark about what Jonathan told her and that Jonathan also said that Lionel had something to do with Jonathan Kent's death which turns Clark against Lionel even further.
Milton Fine and Lex are meeting at Lex's mansion and Fine is displeased that Lex hasn't given him the vaccine as he promised he would. Lex tells Fine he doesn't trust him and pulls out a piece of kryptonite and holds it close to Fine who is unaffected. Fine then turns his arm into a razor sharp sword and holds it at Lex's throat and tells him he isn't one of the people from the ship but he was made by them. Then he tells Lex to tell him where the vaccine is. Chloe tells Clark she's been tracing Lionel Luthor's calls and has discovered that he talked to Jonathan Kent the night of Jonathan's death, and Clark figures out that Lionel was indeed there when Jonathan Kent died. Clark calls Lionel and has him meet him in the barn and accuses him of killing his father but Lionel tells him he's wrong. Clark throws Lionel around the barn in anger over his father's death until he grabs Lionel by the throat. Then Jonathan Kent appears telling Clark not to hesitate and to kill Lionel at once.
Lionel tells Clark his father would never want him to kill anyone and Clark realizes that's true and he turns and blasts Jonathan with heat vision which drives Jonathan/Fine into a tractor denting it badly. Then Jonathan/Fine picks up the tractor and throws it at Clark who's buried under the wreckage for a moment before smashing his way free. Then Jonathan/Fine grabs Clark around the throat from behind with his arm and tells him he'd kill him but he still needs him to conquer our world. But suddenly Lionel appears with his eyes glazed over and his hand outstretched towards Jonathan/Fine who warns him not to touch him. But Lionel grabs Jonathan/Fine's face and he morphs into his Milton Fine form and vanishes in a flash of light screaming in pain. Then Lionel's eyes go clear again and he asks Clark what just happened! Lionel and Clark go to Lionel's office in Metropolis and Clark tells Lionel that Fine isn't Kryptonian but was somehow made by them. Lionel doesn't know how his touch stopped Fine but he opens a vault to show that the voice he's been channeling has had him writing thousands of papers and journals in the Kryptonian language and Lionel believes they're all intended for Clark's use.
Lionel and Clark go to Chloe and Lionel explains he doesn't understand what he's been writing; he's merely the oracle for the words. He then suggests they go to Clark's Fortress of Solitude but Clark reminds Lionel and Chloe the last time he went there it was a trick to try and release General Zod, the worst of Krypton's criminals, from captivity. Lionel tells them that Fine has had Lex's scientists develop a virus so deadly it could wipe out humanity, but he thinks the symbols he's been drawing foretell an even greater danger. Clark and Chloe realize that even though Lionel doesn't know where the virus lab is that Lana probably does and Clark goes to meet her. Lana finds Clark going through her papers in her dorm room and Clark tries to convince her that she's involved with Lex in something neither of them realize the danger of. Then we see Lex and Fine in the laboratory and Lex tells Fine he never trusted Fine and that the virus was probably meant to wipe out humanity and protect the invaders that Fine represents so he developed a vaccine for it.
Fine tells Lex he never intended the vaccine for anyone but Lex, and then he injects Lex with it and Lex collapses on the lab floor and Fine punches an electrical panel with such strength that the entire lab starts to short-circuit and explode. Clark speeds into the room just after Fine has sped out of it. The next day at Lex's mansion a doctor tells Lex that whatever he was injected with has had no effect on him and he's never been healthier. The doctor leaves and Clark enters the room and tells Lex he's been double crossed by Fine because he wouldn't trust his own father. Then Lex tells Clark to stop bothering Lana and accept the fact he's lost her to him through his own fault. That night Lionel visits Ma Kent and confesses he was there the night Jonathan Kent died and he did so after Lionel told Jonathan Kent he knew Clark's secrets. He then tells Ma Kent that he hopes that someday she'll be able to forgive him and to remember that at least he was honest with her. Lana asks Lex why Fine would have him develop the vaccine just so he could destroy it and Lex says he can't explain it. Then while he's opening a bottle of wine he cuts his thumb and the cut morphs closed just as if it were Fine's thumb.
Lana doesn't see what happened and Lex doesn't let on that somehow he's just miraculously healed an injury. Lois goes to see Clark and tells him that he has to accept that even if it's with Lex, Lana has moved on from him. She suggests that he stay away from Lana and give their feelings for each other time to settle. Then she suggests that he still might find the right person for himself despite how much he hurts right now about Lana. Then as Lois leaves Chloe comes in and Clark confesses the baseball tickets from his father caught him off guard and reminded him of the loss of Jonathan Kent. But Chloe tells Clark his father's greatest gift to him was to teach him to be his own man and Clark agrees. Then she shows Clark the symbols she ran through a computer and the pattern that was deciphered spelled in Kryptonian. Clark's face goes blank as he tells Chloe the words spell out, "Zod is coming".

Our Story:
It's a bright and clear day in Kansas and Clark is working in the barn when a strange shadow passes over the farm. Shelby the dog starts barking and the horses act up as their animal instincts warn them of the danger that's near. Clark feels apprehensive too, but he ignores it and closes the barn doors and continues working. Lex and Lana are asleep in each other's arms in Lex's mansion when suddenly Lex bolts from the couch and runs out the door holding his head in pain. He jumps into his car and races off as Lana jumps in her car and pursues him while trying to call him with her cell phone. Lex tears down the road with Lana right behind him until he reaches a certain field and gets out of his car and runs into its center with Lana still chasing him. Lex sees Lana and warns her to stay back which she does and suddenly the ground around Lex explodes in different spots while Lex still howls with the pain in his head.
Suddenly the shadow that passed the Kent farm appears over Lex and even while barely visible we can tell it's the black triangular ship which crashed on Earth in the second meteor shower from Krypton and the same one that Lex has been looking for along with its occupant, Milton Fine. A beam flashes down from the ship enveloping Lex as he screams, and Milton Fine appears next to Lana and tells her he's preparing Lex although we don't know what he means. In a blaze of light the ship, Lex, and Fine all disappear and Lana runs to the spot where Lex stood. And from above we see that she now stands in the field in the middle of the Kryptonian symbol which stands for Zod, the tyrant criminal from Krypton! Lois is on the phone and upset because the airline has somehow lost her and Martha Kent's reservations for their flight to an education summit and Lionel Luthor shows up on the porch and offers them a ride in the Luthorcorp jet to the summit. Lana goes to Chloe at the Daily Planet and tells her what's happened to Lex and Chloe immediately goes to Clark and fills him in on the situation.
Clark figures this is a stratagem of Fine's to free Zod from the Phantom Zone he's trapped in and then tells Chloe he now thinks that Jor-El has been trying to protect them from this very threat and Clark blames himself for not listening to his biological father. He goes to the Kawatche caves and inserts his spaceship's key into the console hidden there and is instantly transported to his Fortress of Solitude far away in the frozen North. Jor-El tells his son he knows he is in pain from losing his adoptive father and Clark tells Jor-El of Fine's plan to free Zod. Jor-El explains that Fine is merely an extension of what is not just a ship but something called the "Brain interactive construct", or Brainiac, whose sole purpose is to free Zod. He also tells Clark that Zod was put in the Phantom Zone for crimes which ultimately ended with the destruction of Krypton and everyone on it.
Before he was imprisoned and Krypton destroyed, Zod's physical body was destroyed to prevent him from ever escaping the Phantom Zone. But his spirit could still escape the Zone if a body was used as a vessel for Zod to inhabit in our world and he will cause destruction here just as he did on Krypton. A crystalline console lights up and from it floats a crystal with a blade in its end encrypted with Kryptonian symbols. Jor-El tells Clark that no matter who the body belongs to that Zod will try to inhabit, Clark must use this alien weapon to kill that person! Clark returns to the Daily Planet and he and Chloe reason that Lex must be the vessel for Zod and that's what Fine meant when he told Lana he was preparing Lex. Neither of them realizes that Lana is listening outside the door as Clark tells Chloe that this means he must kill Lex!
Lionel Luthor visits Clark and when he sees the blade he shows Clark a new message that he's channeled from Jor-El. Clark says it means "sacrifice the vessel" and he explains that Lionel's son Lex is to be the vessel for Zod to inhabit and that Clark is supposed to kill him. Lionel goes to the field where Lex was taken and Lex has just reappeared there when his father arrives. Lionel tells Lex that when he decided to work with Fine he made a deal with the devil and now he's going to pay for it, and Lex shrugs his father off with super-human strength like Clark's which throws him into his car's windshield a hundred feet away. Battered and bleeding, Lionel sees his son super-speed up to him to ask if he's okay and Lionel asks Lex what has he been turned into but Lex doesn't answer and then he suddenly super-speeds out of sight. Lex speeds into his mansion and finds Lana and he shows her the powers he gained by shooting an gun point-blank into his hand and then showing her the flattened bullet in his unharmed palm.
He tells Lana despite his new abilities he's still Lex and he loves her more then anything. Lana tells Lex what she overheard about how Clark was supposed to kill him and Lex tells her his father has infected Clark with fear as he used to do with Lex. He then tells Lana he must go to do something and he'll always love her. When Lana says she's afraid she'll never see Lex again, Lex tells her if she wants to be with him forever to meet him that night on the roof of Luthorcorp in Metropolis and then he super-speeds out of the room. Clark finds Lionel at Smallville Medical Center after he's been treated for the injuries Lex gave him and Lionel tells Clark that Lex now has the same powers as Clark. He tells Clark that he raised his son to be ruthless and survive at any cost and those qualities make him the perfect vessel for someone as evil as Zod. When Clark says he refuses to kill Lex, Lionel reminds Clark how close Lex and Lana have become and that his next decision must be made carefully as it will involve the possible sacrifice of one of them.
Martha Kent and Lois are aboard Luthorcorp's jet heading for the summit and Martha tells Lois she's uncomfortable taking favors from Lionel now that she's a senator. And she also tells Lois she's not interested in having a relationship with anyone, much less Lionel Luthor. Clark goes to Lex's mansion looking for him but instead he finds Lana who won't tell Clark where Lex is as she thinks Clark will kill Lex. When Clark tries to tell her that Fine didn't give these powers to Lex without expecting something in return, Lana tells Clark that at least Lex has always been honest with her unlike Clark who she can't believe she ever loved. She leaves and Fine appears behind Clark and tells him that he was supposed to be Zod's vessel but because Jor-El's spirit was too strong in Clark for that to happen, now Lex will be the vessel for Zod and Lana will love a monster. When Clark refuses to have anything to do with Fine or Zod, Fine touches a computer panel and says that the humans can't survive without their technology and all the power suddenly goes out not only in the mansion but all over Metropolis!
Clark speeds to Metropolis and the Daily Planet where Chloe shows Clark that every computer's showing kryptonian symbols and the entire city's shutting down due to the virus infecting the technology. Suddenly a car smashes into the basement towards Chloe and Clark grabs Chloe with one hand and stops the car instantly with his other hand. Chloe tells Clark he may have no choice but to kill Lex and then as he leaves she tells him she may never see him again and rushes to him and they passionately kiss. Then one phone rings ominously and when Clark picks it up it's Lex on the other end telling Clark he heard he wanted to see him! Lois wakes up and when she points out to Martha Kent they should have landed long ago, the two look out the window to see the jet is not over Washington D.C. but has flown far into the frozen northlands and then we see it's none other then Fine at the controls!
Clark rushes home to his barn where Lex is waiting for him and he baits Clark about their years of friendship and how Clark lied to everyone and that Lex wanted Clark's life and at least he ended up with Lana who once loved Clark. Then Lex throws Clark across the barn and Clark does the same to Lex who super-speeds up behind him and tells him he always knew there was something different about Clark. Clark throws Lex to the ground and holds the kryptonian knife to his throat when another manifestation of Fine appears urging Clark to kill Lex. But Clark instead throws the knife into Fine's chest and we see a console in the Fortress turn bright red as Fine collapses onto his knees. As Clark asks what has he done, Fine answers that he's opened the portal for Zod and the red beam flashes from the Fortress to Fine and into Lex blinding them all. Then Fine vanishes and when Lex turns to Clark and tells him he has his father's eyes we realize that Zod has inhabited Lex! Zod tells Clark that Lex is now dead and he has come for revenge for his many years of captivity in the Phantom Zone.
When Clark tells Zod it's between the two of them, Zod tells Clark he'll suffer more by seeing innocents humans suffer at Zod's hands unless he joins him. Clark tells Zod he'll never join him and Zod takes a circular bracelet off and throws it pass Clark who is sucked by it into the Phantom Zone! At the same time, aboard the Luthorcorp jet Martha Kent and Lois pass out from lack of oxygen as it seems Fine's plan closes the net on Clark and all that he cares about. Riots are breaking out all over the world in major cities as the power dies in each one and we see Chloe running for her life in a Metropolis gone mad as rioters loot and run wild! She reaches Lionel Luthor's limousine but the rioters break into it and pull the helpless Lionel and Chloe from the car. Then we see Lana fighting her way down the street and she manages to make it to the Luthorcorp building and she heads to the roof where Lex, who she doesn't know is really Zod, is waiting for her as he told her he would.
She tells Lex/Zod that she made it there to find out what there is between them once and for all and Zod holds Lana in his arms and kisses her. And as the camera pulls back farther and farther, we see that cities all over the planet are blinking out one by one like candles being snuffed. And then we see Clark trapped in a Phantom Zone panel fly past the screen and deep into outer space as Zod appears to be triumphant over all the Earth!
