Matt's Answers

Josh K. (captianjak@yahoo.com) asks:
Is there anything special coming out next year for the 70th anniversary of Superman, like a CD-Rom box set with all the comics from 1938-present?

Matt: I can't speak to that point, Josh, though your suggestion for a CD-Rom box set has certainly been asked in this forum before. The reason I can't speak to that point is because I don't want to steal the thunder from any other departments! As far as the monthly titles, I can tell you that we have some very, very special plans afoot, which I think will delight the vast majority of you.

Jason Major (jasonmajor32@hotmail.com) asks:
Hey, Matt! I noticed Richard Donner is not listed as co-writer on Action #658 & Action #659 - is he finishing his run? Also, how did the writing between Donner and Johns break down? Did Donner only do plots, or did he contribute to dialogue?

Matt: Hey, Jason! That's one sharp eye you have. Indeed, Richard "Tricky Dick" Donner left our warm confines following the finale of "Escape from Bizarro World." The writing breakdown between him and Geoff was pretty equal in regards to both the plotting and dialogue. Really, you don't think one single person could come up with such magic on their own, do you?

Chris Clow (demolitionist@gmail.com) asks:
Hey, Matt. Thanks again! I was just wondering, is the current (or preceding) DC movie universe (either what we have so far with "Batman Begins" and "Superman Returns", or the old Reeve/Keaton/Kilmer flicks) one (or more) of the 52?

Matt: Truthfully, Chris, I'd say not, due to the likeness and rights issues that would be involved in such a venture. Having said that, there are certainly a lot of unidentified universes out there, and if there was enough clamor made to people far more important than me...

Fabio Alexandre Rocha Marques (farm1974@gmail.com) asks:
When will DC Comics publish Barry Windsor-Smith take on Superman, the long-awaited "An Evening With Superman"?

Matt: You know, Fabio, that's one I'm going to have to do more than a little bit of research on. I'll have to get back to you on that, hopefully when I answer the next round of questions (sometime in 2012, the rate I'm going).

TalOs (talos_rokyian@yahoo.com.au) asks:
Matt, with JSoA's "Thy Kingdom" arc set to unfold within that title, where aparently Earth-Kingdom Come's very own Superman will be recruited as a member of "New Earth" JSoA team, would it then be safe to say that inturn both JSoA AND the main Supertitles may be crossing over resulting with KC Superman actually meeting OUR "New Earth" very own (or say, any other of our "New Earth") paticular Superfamily members?

Matt: Amazingly, TalOs, that's not something that is in the cards. Between the obvious-as-all-get-out delays in our telling our longer stories in the Superman books coupled with the sense that too much stuff has been crossing over too much of the time lately, we're keeping clear of that story, at least for the time being. But then, I've learned long ago never to say never. Should we link up with JSoA, it would be more in the spirit of how our upcoming Legion arc in ACTION connects to the Legion story that recently ran in the JSA/JLA crossover. If you read that, you're gonna love this. And if you didn't check that story out, that's cool, too!

Michael Sacal (Email address withheld by request) asks:
My question is in regards to the city of Kandor. In "Candor", the story that ran in the Supergirl title, Kandor is a city populated by aliens from different species and no Kryptonians. In "Supergirl & Legion of Super-Heroes", however, Kandor's a city populated by xenophobic Kryptonians. In the "Action Comics Annual" it says that the city Superman has is a replica created by the Wizard Tolos. So, which is it? Is Kandor still a city populated by aliens like it was before One Year Later (and as shown in Supergirl AFTER One Year Later), or has it gone back to being a city populated by Kryptonians like it was before the 1986 Crisis?

Matt: Well, I'm not sure how you got Amalak to become an investigator for you, Michael, but he definitively answers that question in SUPERMAN #670 (aka "The Third Kryptonian, Part 3"). Indeed, those are non-Kryptonians populating the bottle in the Fortress. So does that negate the Kandor seen in SUPERGIRL & THE LEGION? Nahhhh! All will be made clear. In fact, we'll start exploring this topic a bit in 2008.

Satyen Gandhi (satyengandhi@hotmail.com) asks:
As alwasys, thanks for your attention and time in answering these questions! Just had a simple one - Where does Supergirl, Kara Zor-El, live now? Is she in Metropolis, Gotham, Smallville, NYC? Does she live in an apartment, house, fortress of solitude, etc? By herself or with roommates? Thanks Matt.

Matt: Supergirl has an apartment, paid for by Batman and located in Metropolis, Satyen. Of course the question you must ask is, why would Bats set her up with such a thing? She may not be human, be he is, and as we know full well, humans always have an agenda of some sort. Yeah, even me!

You've been doing this "Ask Matt" Fan Forum for over a year and a half now. Have the questions gotten easier or harder to answer?

Matt: That's a great question! On the one hand, the questions themselves have gotten easier as I grow more and more familiar with the extensive and wonderful history of Superman and his pals. Plus, as we finally put the wraps on stories like "Camelot Falls" and "Last Son," we're able to really plan out with greater detail what we'll be doing in the short and long-term future, which gives me more grist for your mill. At the same time, I may have been doing this for a year and half, but I feel like I've only answered you folks about 3 times. I'm sure it's more than that. Obviously, I'll be renewing my New Year's resolution from last year.
