April Fools – DC Comics Cancels “Superman” and “Action Comics” for “Year One” Continuity

Below is the April Fool’s Day prank news story we posted… Hopefully it didn’t freak too many of you out.

In a move that is sure to anger Superman comic book fans worldwide, DC Comics today announced that both “Action Comics” and “Superman” will be cancelled in favor of the continuity being set up in Frank Miller and John Romita Jr.’s “Superman Year One” series.

Beginning with the release of large-format periodicals in the months of June, August and October, the “Superman Year One” story will then become the officially recognized canon for the world of Superman, with Brian Michael Bendis’ “Event Leviathan” wiping the slate clean, making way for Miller and Romita Jr. to take over with comic books coming out in November 2019.

“What I want to do is to help bring him back to this iconic force and maybe play up the truth and justice and just not be so noisy about the ‘American way’ part,” Miller said. “We’ve got plenty of that now.”

SUPERMAN: YEAR ONE #1 will be available in local comic stores on June 19.

From the burning world of Krypton to the bucolic fields of Kansas, the first chapter of SUPERMAN YEAR ONE tracks Clark Kent’s youth in Kansas, as he comes to terms with his strange powers and struggles to find his place in our world. Faced with the need to hide his heritage and powers in order to survive, Clark will find his humanity through the grounding of the Kent family and the relationships that will define the man he will become. Told by two of the most revered voices in comics, SUPERMAN: YEAR ONE is more than a superhero story – it’s about the choices made by Clark Kent on his path to becoming a legend. It’s a testament to the importance of choosing to become a hero.

Ummmm…. what?????

Why would they ever let a Frank Miller story become canon for Superman???

And wow… so much for the whole ‘Bendis is coming!’ Crap.

Why not just let Bendis reset the continuity when he came on? I can’t think of two people worse suited for Superman comics than Miller and Romita jr.

I miss Dan Jurgens.

You almost got me with this one. It’s one of your better pranks, Steve, particularly because there had been real rumors that DC is looking to cull their books considerably, because of financial troubles.

See, the reason this isn’t funny and caused me to schedule an echocardiogram is because the comic industry is doing just this kind of thing right now. 🙁
