As we reported earlier this month, Tom Welling revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he had a chance to return to the world of Superman on TV when approached to possibly play Clark Kent or Superman at the beginning of Season 2 of “Supergirl”. However, Welling knocked back the idea, choosing instead to return to our screens in the TV series “Lucifer”, where he’ll play the role of Marcus Pierce, an accomplished police lieutenant. He explains more in a new interview published by EW.com…
“I definitely didn’t want to play Clark Kent again,” Welling says. “The great thing about Clark is he didn’t know who he was and he didn’t know what he was supposed to do with what he had and his abilities. This character very much knows what he’s capable of and knows what he wants to do and knows how to do it, so as much fun as that is to play, it wasn’t necessarily because of Clark that I chose this character. It was so many more factors than just, ‘I don’t want play Clark again,’ but I’d be lying if I was saying that I do not enjoy playing something very different for sure.”
“Lucifer” will return Monday, October 2nd at 8.00pm ET on Fox.
He said he’s not interested in playing Superman or Clark again, but what about a different character? Jor-el perhaps? Or maybe a young Perry White. Or the police officer Daniel Turpin? I think that was his name. My point is he doesn’t have to play Superman again to be on Supergirl. There are other roles he could play. I mean Dean Cain and Terry Hatcher have played different roles, and so has Helen Slater and Laura Vandervoot. I don’t know if I misspelled their names, please excuse me if I did.
That is true spidey2878, but maybe they asked him to be Superman, and he never and still doesn’t want play Superman I think. I just think he doesn’t or didn’t want to play Superman and never really has, even on Smallville even at they end you don’t see him as Superman. I think he just wants nothing to do with Superman to be honest or Superman related shows, even if they offered another roll other than Superman. It would’ve been cool to have seen Dean Cain and Terry Hatcher play the roles of Superman and Lois Lane Jpx98. It could still happen given that they use the multiverse angle for their show. It works on the Flash, and I don’t see why it can’t work for Supergirl. Maybe an older Superman travels with Lois to Supergirl’s world to help her and her Cousin? It could happen. Clearly he’s not interested anymore. For one: he has played the character for ten years and gave it all the best. Second: he’s worried of being typecast and never gets an opportunity to shine on another film/television role. The less variations in acting, the worse his career would suffer. He could still play other Superman related characters if he wants to. The question is whether that role would interest him a is a whole-nother-story. I guess the guy is happy to still be working in other projects.
Not to mention that for the most part over the ten year period they(CW), basically stole about everything they could from STM 1&2 as well as some comic book stories. We saw it played out with Clark Kent instead of Superman. We all witnessed the stubbornness in keeping him as CK. But in saying that what we really witnessed during the last 2 or 3 seasons was Superman dressed as CK. They(CW), were just to pig headed to bring the suit gradually into the fold.
Damn straight. In my honest opinion 5 seasons would have been enough introduction and maybe a sixth season introducing Superman to Metropolis and the world.
It is what it is though. All the Superman Charisma on screen is not enough to prevent the George Reeves attitude.
