April 3, 2016: "Batman v Superman" Stays No. 1 for Second Weekend

Who Will Win? While "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" saw a large dip in ticket sales, the movie still remains No. 1 at the U.S. box office for a second weekend, earning $52.3 million in America according to studio estimates.

Globally the movie took in US$85.1 million this weekend, pushing the film's global haul to $682.9 million... passing the lifetime gross of "Man of Steel" by just its second weekend. The film has also already surpassed the worldwide totals of "Iron Man", "Iron Man 2", "Captain America", and "Thor".

Critics have piled on the film and word-of-mouth has been mixed. Warner Bros., the studio behind the $250 million production, spent lavishly to produce and market the picture because it wants to kick off a series of interconnected movies based on DC Comics characters. The studio already has films based on the Flash, Wonder Woman, and the Justice League in the works and next summer brings "Suicide Squad," a film about a team of super-villains.

Despite the frosty reception from reviewers, analysts argued that "Batman v Superman" is a hit for the studio.

"They'll be crying all the way to the bank with $700 million," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for ComScore.
