March 26, 2014: Iowa's George Reeves' 100th Birthday Celebration

George Reeves By Chris Brockow

This past Saturday, March 22, Woolstock, Iowa held a George Reeves Super Family Day to celebrate George's 100th birthday. He was born George Keefer Brewer in Woolstock, Iowa.

I caught up with one of the event organizers, Veronica Guyader to see how the day went...

Q: How did the George Reeves Super Family Day go?

Veronica: We had a nice day at the Heartland Museum. We showed 5 episodes of the ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN from Seasons 1 through 4. About 40 people came through, while others called in right as we were packing up. It was about half the numbers I expected but the group present were upbeat and enthusiastic. The four children under 10 years of age that were present all went home with double drawings... aka Superman Swag. The kids really were excited and enjoyed the whole event. One volunteer from Colorado (who helped set up and take down) won the grand drawing... going home with 9 items. Other adults also received Superman Swag with glee. We had, as one little girl put it, "birthday cookies" with the Superman logo and also pizza. About 30 people went through the museum... making a little over $100 for the museum... with additional donations of $210. Friends of the George Reeves Memorial donated $300 and George Reeves items for their Historical Society Library (which included fan-fiction comics THE ADVENTURES OF GEORGE REEVES, artwork, biographical info on multimedia, etc.)

Q: Did everything go well?

Veronica: I honestly did not know if I would have been able to attend this last event as there has been several months of illness in my family that has taken a serious turn this past week. Right now my family is my priority, another reason why it is a blessing to have co-hosts or organizers, allowing some flexibility for me to take care of what's important, whilst helping others in supporting their cause or institution via the presence and involvement of George Reeves' legacy.

Q: What is scheduled or going to be scheduled for the next event?

Veronica: We are working on confirming and finalizing the following three months' events within the next few weeks.

Q: Are you going to rest before that or are you going to work on it right away?

Veronica: And yes, I took a nice nap after the event was over. I await confirmation of the next three events from co-hosts... and am looking forward to each of them. They each bring different levels of work in getting them prepared... but I have spaced them out appropriately as not to become too overwhelmed.

George Reeves Q: Were people looking forward to this event?

Veronica: Many of the people I have encountered in recent weeks leading up to this event shared their interest but also apologies for not being able to attend due to prior commitments. They and others from the last three events have expressed how important it is to create events like these, exploring the history of the area and of an era ... a generation of people remembering it all too well.

Q: Were you pleased with the way the day turned out?

Veronica: Others wished the event could have been several days or longer hours... .due to work schedules, etc. But all in all, I was pleased with the event. The people present had a good time and some had never been exposed to these episodes of THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN. Happy and smiling faces left the museum when the event was over. The owners of where George was born have attended all the events and when asked to share with others the stories they knew from when George was born.

Thank you Veronica and all the others who put this day together. It sounds like all of your hard work was appreciated and that everyone had an enjoyable time.

Thank you also for keeping the memory of George Reeves alive.
