April 4, 2000: "Planet DC" Annuals
A world of heroism";"The Justice League of America. The Justice Society of America. Despite the prominence those teams share, the DCU's heroes aren't limited to the United States alone, and this summer, DC proves it with eight standalone Annuals showcasing some of DC's most established heroes - plus talented newcomer Batgirl - alongside their brand-new, never-before-seen counterparts beyond U.S. borders with the "Planet DC" Annuals. And these stories won't be simple team-ups: each extra-length Annual will feature a backup story revealing the new heroes' origins! The multinational fun begins in JLA ANNUAL #4 (written by Brian K. Vaughan with art and cover by Steve Scott and Hector Collazo) as the JLA races to Turkey to battle an ancient evil, only to find that they'll need the help of the mystic-powered national heroine known as the Janissary! Then, in BATGIRL ANNUAL #1 (written by Scott Peterson with art by Mike Deodato and John Stanisci and cover by Matt Haley and Kevin Nowlan) Batgirl and Batman travel to India to investigate the kidnapping of an Indian actor from the streets of Gotham, only to find that a tortured heroine - the shapeshifter known as Aruna - is already on the case...and prefers to work alone. In SUPERMAN ANNUAL #12, the final "Planet DC" Annual for June, CRIMSON co-creators Oscar Pinto and Francisco Haghenbeck (joined by Brian K. Vaughan) tell a story of their home nation of Mexico, as the Man of Steel meets three local super-heroes - Acrata, El Muerto and Iman - in a mystical battle that isn't what it seems (illustrated by Carlo Barberi and Juan Vlasco with cover by Humberto Ramos and Wayne Faucher).
Each "Planet DC" Annual will feature a unifying design and cover dress featuring the new heroes with the flags of their countries of origin with a globe beneath their feet as the linking element. Plus, plans are in the works for these new heroes to take an active role in the DC Universe - such as the character introduced in the GREEN LANTERN ANNUAL taking a key role in an upcoming JLA miniseries - making the Annuals a rare opportunity to get in on the ground floor of some exciting new characters that will make "Planet DC" more exciting than ever!
