October 18, 2016: Will There Be a Superman Spin-Off Starring Tyler Hoechlin?

With Tyler Hoechlin’s appearance as Superman in the first two episodes of “Supergirl” Season 2, fans have been speculating on whether The CW could launch a spin-off TV series for the Man of Steel. During a recent Q&A session Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg explained how happy they’ve been having been able to bring Superman in to their TV universe, but that’s really the extent of their focus for the immediate future.

“We’re so happy with what we get to do,” Kreisberg said. “I don’t mean for that to sounds as bad as it does, but we asked if we could have Superman in the first episode, and DC and Warner Bros. said ‘you could have him for the first two episodes’ and we were like ‘great!'”

That doesn’t mean a Superman TV series couldn’t happen…

“I’m not going to sit here and say that there’s never going to be a world in which there’s a Superman TV show and that Tyler’s going to star in it – I don’t know what the future holds, but right now that’s not our focus.”

“Right now, we’re working on Supergirl, which is the flagship, and we’re working on a way for Tyler to reprise the role,” Kreisberg added. “That’s really what our focus is: on Supergirl.”

Well, Kriesberg said the priority is Supergirl, so I think we have our answer. To be honest, I’d prefer a Superman animated series and some animated films…

I loved the portrayal of Superman on the show. He was the classic version of the character I’ve known and loved since my childhood. There were so many little winks and nods to the Christopher Reeves movies. And the iconic Crisis shot was just wonderful. I hope the writers and directors of future Superman films will take a cue from the spot-on portrayal in Supergirl.

I’d love to have a new TV series commissioned. I really do. But can it be done when Supergirl is still running and seemingly fresh on the CW?

My suggestion is this: the CW should not cancel the show and combining both somehow and just rename it differently to fit the super cousins in. But that’ll be a long shot. Well…anything can happen.

I definitely don’t think we’ll get a Superman solo show any time soon, what with Supergirl covering a lot of the same ground. BUT, maybe we could get Hoechlin heading a LEGENDS OF TOMORROW-type ensemble series. Maybe a Justice League or Society show? Superman and the Legion of Superheroes?

While I absolutely wouldn’t mind a new Superman animated series or film, the version of Superman presented in the show is a great alternative to the DCCU. In TV Warner’s doesn’t have to play catch up because the steady progress of universe building is being done every week during the season. If WB/DC decided to go all in with Superman on TV it’d be fine with me. But even if we only ever get to see him as a reoccurring supporting character in Supergirl I could live with it. I won’t expect him to take over her show or over… Read more »

Trouble is is that we have enough superhero shows that are approaching being maybe on that cusp of being too many. They put more on and there going to be spread so thin that the audiences are going to be even more minimized. Although I enjoyed him more than I thought I would, a series on TV is going to water him down on the big screen. I think they should save the DC big guns for the big screen.

Considering how the big guns are being handled on the big screen I’d just as soon have this Superman on my tv every week. Besides, if there can be Flash in both there can be Superman in both.

Hoechlin’s Kent was good. His Superman needs to be more authoritative. Cavill is spot on for me.

@liheibao Yeah, man. We’ve got a dominant live-action cinematic version and a limited silver-screen live-action version, but it isn’t enough. Supes needs more love in EVERY version of media. He hasn’t had an animated series for 20 years and his last solo animated outing was 2013’s Superman: Unbound. DC’s star player shouldn’t be getting benched like this. He needs and deserves WAY more attention than flipping “I’m a grim, stoic jerk who sucks at his job” Batman. It’s like people have forgotten what a REAL superhero is… @CollyerisSuperman Agreed. Henry Cavill’s version marks the first time I was into Superman… Read more »

I wonder how my words could warrant a dislike. I didn’t swear or anything. If this is about Batman, I can’t be the only one who has these sentiments. The guy’s everywhere and anywhere. Last I checked, Superman is the flagship, not Batman. Superman is the greatest hero ever, not Batman. Also, the animated series and films portion of my first paragraph can’t possibly warrant a dislike either. But if this was about my latter paragraph praising Henry Cavill over every live-action incarnation before (and even after in the case of Hoechlin) him, then oh well. To each his own.… Read more »

First two episodes of Supergirl with a great Superman shows the latter character correctly in my view. Snyder, Warners & Cavill take note, this version of Superman is quality. A Superman series is a better vehicle than average movie versions thrown at us every other year. Henry Cavill your good but the production of your Superman is a little too serious & dark. Superman presented here is much nicer on the eye & what attracted me to Superman character (Reeve) originally!

Anyone else think Tylers face kind of looks like Phil Bourassa’s Superman design for the Young Justice cartoon?
