The Best Superman Comic Books to Read in 2025 to Get Ready for the New Movie
Want to dive into Superman’s world before the 2025 film hits theaters? Here are seven must-read comic book stories:
Start with “All-Star Superman” by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. This Eisner-winning masterpiece is a love letter to everything Superman stands for – hope, heroism, and heart. It’s pure magic.

For an iconic origin story, grab “Superman: Birthright” by Mark Waid. This modern retelling shows Clark Kent’s journey from Smallville to Metropolis, and how he becomes the Man of Steel.

Don’t miss “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?” by Alan Moore. This legendary tale imagines Superman’s final adventure and shows what makes him Earth’s greatest hero.

“Kingdom Come” by Mark Waid and Alex Ross is essential reading – this epic story shows an older Superman returning to inspire a new generation in a darker future. The painted artwork alone is worth the price.

For an intimate look at Superman’s early days, read “Superman for All Seasons” by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. It’s a beautifully illustrated story about Clark Kent’s early years and how the people of Smallville shaped him into the Man of Steel.

“Superman: Up in the Sky” by Tom King demonstrates how far Superman will go to save just one person – showing why he’s been inspiring readers for over 80 years.

Finally, check out “Superman: The Man of Steel” by John Byrne. This ‘80s classic rebooted Superman for a new generation and may have inspired the tone of the upcoming film.

Some of these stories are collected in the movie tie-in collection “The Superman Box Set“, featuring the movie’s stylized “S” shield on the front cover.
Whether you’re a longtime fan or completely new to comics, these stories will get you ready for Superman’s next big screen adventure!
I also feel that they are going to touch on ‘what’s so funny about truth justice and the American way?’ Also felt I read somewhere that they were also using ‘whatever happened to the man of tomorrow?’’ All great stories in imho… I still want a properly adapted Byrne era of comics … I feel we may get some of that here , especially with Lex. If they keep the Kents alive here I will be very happy and it will set this version apart from the others. I love when he goes home and has great character moments with… Read more »
I would say Superman Smashes the Klan.
I recommend superman secret origin. Because I’m getting the impression that there’s going to be similar moments in the movie compared to superman secret origin. Like for example Metallo in the secret origin comic compared to the mysterious person in black in the new Superman movie. In the comic Lex created Metallo for the government because they did not trust Superman and thought that he was a threat. I think the same thing is going to happen with the mysterious person in black. That he is some kind of experiment to counter superman. That Lex created the man in black… Read more »
John Byrnes man of steel is epic and all star Superman is as well. I felt like the Byrne Superman was in the long version of justice league. Super heroic and powered up. Hope the new version honors Superman in that way. Strong character, great morals, and unbelievable power. Bring on the intergalactic powerhouse villains so he can show his potential. Please no Lex robot suit or Metallo. Just metal that Superman can crush or melt easily. The animated series was so inconsistent with Superman’s abilities in that regard.
