During the “Batman: Hush” animated movie screening and panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Warner Bros. announced that 2020 will see the release of two Superman animated films… One of which will be an animated adaptation of the “Superman: Red Son” Elseworlds comic book story.
Written by Mark Millar, the 2003 graphic novel saw baby Kal-El land in mid-1950s Russia instead of Smallville, Kansas, where he grew up to become a Soviet symbol that fights for the preservation of Stalin’s brand of communism.
Later in 2020 an animated standalone movie titled “Superman: Man of Tomorrow” will also be released, making this the first time two Superman-centered DC Universe Movies will be released in the same year.
According to the announcement from DC Comics, this film will be a fully original story featuring a young Superman early in his career.
In between Warner Bros. will also release “Justice League Dark: Apokolips War”, a follow-up to 2017’s “Justice League Dark” animated movie.

Red Son is a great graphic novel, but I’m always skeptical about these stories being adapted. It’s usually too much material for a proper adaptation (e.g. the underwhelming adaptation of All-Star Superman). As for the other one… look, at this point I’ll settle for animation that doesn’t make me want to gouge my eyes out. A lot of these animated movies have kind of fallen into a “mass production” logic that is antithetical to their approach when they started out in 2007. I’ll take it, but I don’t get too excited for these animated movies anymore. Their quality has just dropped way off the past several years.
Have they announced a deluxe edition of the Death and Return of Superman where they combine both films into one? Pretty sure it’s supposed to come this year with some extra footage not shown in either film.
Good question. I hope that it comes out around December. Sort of like a cherry on top after the recent return of Routh Superman announcement. The second half of this year is starting to look pretty good.

I guess they were going to get around to this one sooner or later. I’ll admit, it’s not my favorite Superman story. I wasn’t a fan of the mini-series. Red Son often gets pointed out by non-Superman fans as “See! This is what he’d really be like!” not realizing that Superman really isn’t much of a tyrant in this story. It also gets a pass by some based on the twist ending. I agree, Secret Identity deserves more recognition and an animated movie would be good.
Unlike others, I’m excited about these animated projects on the way. Where as Superman isn’t getting his do on the big screen, he has things happening in the realm of animation.
As for the visual quality, it’s not like it’s terrible. It’s clean, crisp and gets the job done.
If they are gonna do alt.versions of Superman then I would pay good money for a quality animated version of Secret Identity.

I’m looking forward to this. I’m always up for another Superman animated movie. And it’s awesome that we will get 2 Superman animated films next year. This pleases me very much. For me, getting new Superman animated films are ultimately a better alternative rather than having to wait 5 – 10 years for the next live-action Superman film. My only complaint however, is that I wish they’d make animated adaptations of “Superman Unchained” or “Peace On Earth” Or “The Men Of Tomorrow.”
I’m pretty excited for Red Son. It’s not my favorite story, but I thought the graphic novel was well done. Hopefully if this goes well it’ll open the doors for future adaptations like Secret Identity. I’d love to see Superman for All Seasons or Last Son or Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? I mostly agree with others who’ve said that these animated movies don’t seem as good as they used to, but I was very pleased with Death of Superman, Reign of the Supermen, and Justice League vs. the Fatal Five. TOTAL GARBAGE!! Here we go. They refuse to give a competent Superman animated feature but they gleefully give us Communist Superman?? I don’t care how good it’s done. Garbage. They’re pandering to a anti “real” Superman and give us a bizarre character …… for the sake of not being accused of being pro white American male Superman. And that’s exactly what they’re doing.
Red Son is ridiculously pro-American at its core. Calm down.
Top 3 comics I would like to see made in animation….. 1) Superman-Secret Identity 2) Superman-Secret Origin 3) Superman-Last Son of Krypton/New Krypton/War of The Supermen. Honorable mentions….. Superman Lives* and Superman Birthright Ok, so Superman Lives isn’t a comic but just the story alone sounds like a cartoon and I’m sure Kevin Smith and Nicolas Cage would be up for it. Secret Identity for me is one of the best Elseworlds stories, Secret Origin could bring in Chris Reeves likeness as the comic did and Last Son of Krypton etc could be done as 2-3 films. What about the Death of Clark Kent? Conduit has yet to have made an appearance as a villain in any movie,animated film,tv series, or animated series.

I think this could potentially be really good. I really like Red Son and I think it’s by far the best “Superman takes over the world” story, both in terms of keeping Superman not just sympathetic but even likable, and in terms of the ideas at play. That said, I really hope they do it justice. It’d be way too easy to jettison the story’s tremendous respect for Superman, or to make Batman into the kind of deified jackass that someone like Bruce Timm seems to love so much.
