Warner Archive Announces “Superman: The Movie” Extended Cut

The Warner Archive Collection has announced the upcoming release of “Superman: The Movie” Extended Cut and Special Edition on Blu-Ray.

Decades before blockbuster Extended Cuts were common, Superman proved a true “Man of Tomorrow.” Superman: The Movie received an ahead-of-its-time makeover for its television premiere – nearly 40 more minutes of story, creating a two-night television event. Audiences had already been swept off their feet by Christopher Reeve’s Last Son of Krypton, and now there was more to enjoy. Unseen in decades, this version is paired here with Richard Donner’s definitive vision of his film, the Special Edition Director’s Cut (2000), to create a supersized celebration of Metropolis’ favorite son that preserves the director’s intent while feeding superfan demands.

It’s been years since ive seen the tv version of either film. And to be honest the only scene I vaguely remember is him heating up dinner with his heat vision in part 2! I’ll definitely buy this, but after recently viewing the original cut for the first time on the I screen and having almost 16 years with the extended version, I think I prefer the original version.

This is pretty cool news. Although, I don’t quite get the point of also including the extended cut from 2000. Surely this extended, tv cut is worthy enough of it’s own release. Oh well… Also, I just said this in the other thread about the Superman/Batman movie collection, but with the 40th anniversary of Superman: The Movie coming next year, it would be a great time to give that movie a new HD transfer where they really go through, and clean that movie up. I brought up the example of the Jaws blu-ray where they used the actual negatives, really… Read more »

I know they do showings of Superman The Movie sometimes in select theaters but sadly those never seem to come to my area.

I have fond memories of spending Christmastime watching the extended showings on tv so I’ll likely pick this up. Especially since my copies of the movies are all DVD from the big set that got released when Superman Returns went to DVD release and I don’t currently own any Blu-Ray releases of it.

The release date is October 17th. Thats also when they’ll release the Batman/Superman Anthology, and re-release the Superman movie Anthology and the STM/SII: Donner/SR blu ray.

I don’t know what would be different in the extended cut that hasn’t been seen, in either versions or deleted scenes.

This is Super news. I don’t have the extended cut of the film. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen it. I’m soo getting this blue ray when it comes out. This is definitely the best news I’ve heard for Superman this year. I can’t wait for this Blue ray.

Are you are referring to the difference between S2 Lester cut and S2 Donner cut?

News like this is always good. I’ll definitely pick this up once it’s released. Hopefully someday we’ll get an extended cut of Man of Steel.
