Season 2 - Episode 20: "Endgame"

5Rating - 5 (out of 5): This was a really good sendoff for the show considering the circumstances. I wondered if they ended it this way knowing they were getting cancelled or if they made it this way before they even knew their fate? It wasn't the best of finales for a show I've ever seen but considering the circumstances I think they did an excellent job bringing things to a close.

I liked the death of Wally. Of course it sucked but it brought some gravitas to the show and what it was all about. It wasn't your typical cartoon and was meant for adults as well. Wally cemented this with his sacrifice for the world. It was reminiscent of Barry Allen sacrificing himself for the world in the Crisis On Infinite Earths comic series. It felt a little rushed because it happened so fast but again I think that was good. We didn't have time to prepare for this. In too many shows (live action and animation) the characters are seemingly immortal. And that can be a difficult balance to maintain over time without being stale. A death adds weight to the story if done well. One of my favorite examples is Jet in Avatar the Last Airbender. They dealt with it beautifully and it really showed you the series was not just an episodic fun filled marathon. But that sort of thing was what made it great. This was handled well and I even got a little choked up.

The threat was neutralized and the team all grew up. Nightwing gives up leadership of the Young Justice team because of Wally's death. Artemis has decided to take on herself the mantra of Tigress to continue her fight (which seemed ambiguous as to which side she would be fighting for).

I of course loved the ending because you don't see Savage teaming up with the likes of Darkseid in the comics. Probably for good reason, they are both conniving manipulative megalomaniacs. I suppose if they worked out their differences for a common cause it would be quite bad for the universe.

This could have been an even better show than it was overall. DC had a good thing going for it. It's sad. I thought this had some of the best storytelling I'd seen come out of the animated DCU that was such a large story arc. I hope DC can get their heads outta their butts and get another good show back on the air. Please. For us. The fans. I will always love this show and it will always have a special place in my heart. This being my last review for it, I bid it a fond adieu.
