With the upcoming 2-part animated movie “The Death of Superman”, Warner Bros. Animation has promised a more faithful adaptation of the epic comic book story than what was seen in 2007’s “Superman: Doomsday”. And they’re bringing back some familiar voices to take on this massive story.
Jerry O’Connell will return to voice Superman, after having done so in three previous films: “Justice League: Throne of Atlantis,” “Justice League vs. Teen Titans,” and “Justice League Dark”. He will be joined by his wife Rebecca Romijn, who will voice the role of Lois Lane.
Rainn Wilson will take on the role of Lex Luthor, while other voice cast members from previous animated Justice League movies will also return, including Rosario Dawson as Wonder Woman; Nathan Fillion as the Green Lantern; Christopher Gorham as The Flash; Matt Lanter as Aquaman; Shemar Moore as Cyborg; and Jason O’Mara as Batman.
Rocky Carroll will voice Silas Stone (Cyborg’s father) and Patrick Fabian takes on the role of Hank Henshaw (aka Cyborg Superman).
“The Death of Superman” animated movie is due to be released some time July/August on Blu-ray, DVD, and for digital download, while the second part “Reign of the Supermen” is set to drop in early 2019.

So they’re keeping this is the ‘New 52’ inspired universe, huh? Hmm, I was kind of hoping it’d be self contained and be Really close to the Comic and maybe even have the animation emulate Jurgen’s art
He may appear that way after his return…
I think that’s the new 52 cape flying in that picture though right?
I actually like the New 52 suit, it is by far the best version of the suit and actually looks alien, like what Superman is.
‘gene hackman was the best lex Luthor’
False. Dwight Shrute is the greatest criminal mind of our time.
This looks… terrible.
I have never been one to complain about the “New 52” Superman or the “New 52 Universe” animated films. The New 52 had its time. It ran its course, and now DC Comics went back to the regular Superman that we all know and love. However, I cannot understand why they are using the “New 52 Superman” to do a so-called “faithful adaptation” of the “Death and Return of Superman” storyline. It just logically does not make sense.
I agree. I didn’t have huge issues with the collared costume during its time, but it really weirds me out in this context.
Why not reserve judgement until after we see the finished product? And including Cyborg among others into this story is definitely a more faithful adaptation to death and return than what Superman Doomsday could have ever hope to have been, even the animation looks far better than S/D.
@Rod – You have a good point. I will reserve judgement until after I see the finished product. I’m always happy to have more Superman content/entertainment, so I’m still looking forward to this film.
I was very happy when I heard they were making a more faithful adaption then 2007’s version of The Death Of Superman, but today, after seeing these picture’s and seeing which characters will be appearing I am saddened. Firstly only Superman, Lois and Young’ish Lex appeared mostly in the comic with other supporting characters, adding the present Justice League makes no sense judging from the all power full recent animated movies. And second, I don’t necessarily have a problem with the New52 but the animation in the last few Justice League movies have in my opinion been terrible and I’m… Read more »
Maybe those heroes will in all likelihood take the role of the Justice of America, since they have been established in that universe, for example, Maxima will be mirrored by Wonder Woman – which makes sense because both are warriors and have super strength. I’m excited for it and will only pass judgement after I see it and not get down over something I have no real idea what it is going to be.
Yeah, not a huge fan of the New 52 suit for this film… “The Death of Superman” is by no means a New 52 story, so this is kinda weird to me…
At this point, I don’t care about being in the New 52 Animated Universe or not, I really want to see it. Which is different compared to the movie coming before this, which is Suicide Squad. I do wonder about the story version that’ll be seen here. Luthor creates Doomsday, he must’ve. We’ll get Hank here, and Cyborg later. I doubt Cyborg Superman will appear here to create Doomsday, though it might be a cool bait and switch from Lex creating him. I wonder if this is faithful, but based on correcting criticisms or addressing ideas in terms of a… Read more »
I forgot Lex Luthor himself would be technically doing what the JLA here are doing in replacing the JLI. For Luthor, he’;d be replacing Luthor II/Jr.
I wonder if Supergirl will appear or not.
I wasn’t thrilled when I saw that they were using the New 52 design for his costume… but I see what they are probably going to do… Flashpoint changed the DC animated universe to this costume design… The Death of Superman could very well give him a classic look when he comes back or go Rebirth… Bringing us a full Rebirth movie in the foreseeable future or a Superman Reborn movie.
I was wondering what design they will give Doomsday for this film, but from the looks of these images, they probably will give him the new52 design rather than his original 1990’s look.
Keep in mind Wonder Woman doesn’t have her New 52 design so that is a great assumption on your part that Doomsday will look like he does in the New 52 for this movie.
No complaints with the choice of costume. The rest of the Justice League may show up as pallbearers. Saying they will more faithfully adapt the original story is a good start. We’ll see…
I still think they’re replacing the roles of the JLI, or give supporting roles in general in the story.
I’m not applauding this. With all the great story lines they have available, I for one have had enough of the death of Superman. Please,…..we don’t need or want any more “death of Superman”.
After the mess that was Superman Doomsday, I think most, if not all Superman fans want this wrong righted and it looks like we are getting it.
Hmmm…intersting approach. I’d say they’d start with the death of the new 52 Superman and when he returns he wears the classic costume. If it is really a faithful adaptation does that mean we will see Superboy, Steel and Eradicator?
That’s a good question. I was wondering that as well.
I think if anything we will get the modern suit, not the “classic” red trunks suit when he returns.
That is what reports were when it was first announced, Steel and Superboy would appear. Keep in mind that Steel appeared in JL War, though be it as just John Henry.
