The CW Developing “Superman and Lois” TV Series

A spin-off series tentatively titled “Superman and Lois” is in development at The CW, with Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth “Bitsie” Tulloch set to reprise their roles from the “Supergirl” TV series.

According to IGN.com, the new series will build on recent and upcoming developments in Supergirl and focus on the pressures Lois and Clark face in balancing their professional lives, superhero responsibilities, and the complexities of raising a child. That child will be introduced in the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover, a twist that also explains why the couple have been spending so much time off-world in recent seasons of Supergirl.

Produced by Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, “Superman & Lois” is being written and executive produced by Todd Helbing, former showrunner of The Flash. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Geoff Johns will also executive produce the series.

“I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to tell this story, that for now shall remain a secret,” said Hoechlin via his Instagram account. “But I’ve been blessed with nothing less than the most wonderful people to do it alongside of. I couldn’t ask for a better partner than Bitsie Tulloch in all of this. I’ve already learned so much from her and I know that won’t stop anytime soon. So thank you Greg Berlanti and everyone else who brought her in as our Lois Lane. All the people behind the scenes care so much about these characters and their lives and the parts to which we’ll be speaking about, it gives me great comfort to know that they’ll steer us in the right direction. Thank you to everyone that said “yes” to this project (Warner Brothers, DC, CW). We won’t let you down. It’s going to be a grand adventure. Can’t wait to get to work!”

While Tulloch took to Instagram to express her excitement. “I am so excited (thank you Warner Bros. TV, DC Comics, The CW, Greg Berlanti, et al). Our incredible showrunner Todd Helbing is writing SUCH a riveting, unique, and poignant story for us. And I couldn’t ask for a better or more fun partner than Tyler.”

While no other cast members have been announced at this point in time, it would not be surprising to see Jon Cryer return as Lex Luthor, along with other Superman related characters who have appeared on the “Supergirl” TV series over the past four seasons.

Yeah, I heard about this. Two or three years ago, I’d have been overjoyed. Now, I’m between “not giving a toss” and “omg, that’s the only live-action Superman for the next ten years, isn’t it?- despair.

Yep……reduced to the small screen along with soap opera weekly stories. One of the biggest reasons I don’t want this is because of the limited money they have. And you plainly see on Supergirl that they’re using what money they have very sparingly. Another question to ask is, “who on this series is going to be gay”? This is beyond bad news.

Fascinating. So if there is a gay supporting cast member, this will be a problem because…? Also, Superman has been on the small screen before–I know! SHOCKING!–so why would that be a problem now?

It’s going to be a problem if there’s a gay character because CW has a track record of treating Gay Characters as part of a checklist, rather than actual breathing people. You can throw a dart, and you’ll find an instance of CW not treating a character with respect just so they can score brownie points to a fickle crowd that doesn’t care about the character. Also, why is it a problem now, you ask? Maybe it has something to do with the declining quality of Superman’s treatment in the CW? Even in the beginning, the people in-charge were too… Read more »

You are right. They do treat Superman like a B character. I think they are bringing in Superman because none of their current super hero shows have the merchandising clout as Superman. Just look in any toy store, costume shop, or department store, there are tons more items of Superman than Arrow, Black Lightning, The Flash, Batwoman and Supergirl combined! If WB had any brains, they would green light a new Superman film.

I’m really excited about this… 1 Because this is WB/DC deciding that multiple Supermen on screen is OK, and 2 This has potential. It’s what Lois and Clark would have been had they gotten a 5th season… and they could very well age up baby Jon and we could essentially have a live action Jonathan Samuel Kent (Superboy) on TV along with the dynamic the comics had under Jurgens rebirth run!

Couldn’t care less about this. Sorry, but the CW is trash as far as I’m concerned and doesn’t deserve a Superman tv show. It’s the minor leagues of tv networks. If you’re going to do Superman on tv do it on HBO, Netflix or even Amazon. Something like that that could give him a budget. Make it a 8-10 episode season to cut down on filler and get quality over quantity.

The suit needs a total redesign IMO. At least get rid of those leather straps and buckles for the cape.
But I really don’t like how they have handled the character outside of his introduction on Supergirl. So I don’t know about this one.
I also feel if WB is green lighting this, then there is 0 momentum behind another Superman movie. Which isn’t that surprising considering how WB has DC movies planned to last for 8 years and Superman isn’t anywhere to be seen.

I disagree with the theory that it means no Movie. Smallville started in 2001 and ran for 10 seasons. Superman returns came out in 2006. Right smack in the middle of the series. They even had commercials during the show on breaks advertising the movie.

Well, you’re talking about something from 13 years ago in a totally different film climate, different philosophy, different leadership and different creative guidelines. Remember, WB is in a rebuilding phase and souly focusing on stand-alone DC films. I’m also saying not for a several years. Sure, you can hold out hope that there is a secret Superman project, but look at the facts we have. Best case scenario, WB is actively expressing interest in a Superman movie (which they are not) and seeking a director. A director is announced, we get a movie in 5 years. That’s off a normal… Read more »

I think we see a new Superman film in three years. WB does have a history of wasting years making a new Superman film, which is odd since you have over 80 years of comic books and over 50 years of cartoons to formulate an idea for a new movie. They treat the writing chore of developing a new Superman movie as if they were developing a rocket to Mars!

Announced, that makes sense, WB starts looking for a screen writer and director for a new movie within 3 years we might see a new movie by 2025 to 2027.
Releasing in 3 years? Again, not even possible.

It’s not that us complainers don’t want a new Superman show. We do. It’s that we’re not thrilled with another Berlanti production, with the same bad writing and carbon copy formula he’s used on Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Legends… I can already see the opening – The S-Shield, with Clark narrating: My name is Clark Kent. For a time, I was known as earth’s greatest hero. But then I left to start a family. Now I’m back, rediscovering how to be Superman… Cut to 22 episodes with a boring villain and lots of time with “Team Superman” at the fortress… Read more »

Exactly. The Berlanti stuff is like it’s trapped in time in 2001 with Smallville. Smallville was fine for what it was, but it’s potential could only go so far, and that’s going to be the same for this new show. If you’re excited, more power to you, but as far as I’m concerned this is just more of the same with Superman getting the short end of the stick. WB can’t get the character right on the big screen, so instead they’ll just put as little effort as possible and put Superman on a fledgling network with no budget, and… Read more »

Berlanti’s show are not in the same league as Smallville. The super hero shows that followed it on the CW are pale comparisons. They should have gotten the crew that worked on Smallville, The Originals, or Supernatural for a new Superman show. Fans would have been more excited.

Lex Luthor?Brainiac? The Eradicator would be interesting to see. Conduit has never been done before. Mongul, Darkside perhaps? Savior? So many possibilities. Imperiex would be interesting to see.
They could even bring in the actor who played Zod back in season two of Supergirl. He did a pretty good job acting the part.

For a long time really ever since Tyler’s Superman debuted I have thought that doing a series something like this might be good way to go especially if they take their cues from the best of the Rebirth comics because it would be a way to have a Superman series while also giving it some distinction from anything Supergirl is doing. (Really hoping for good casting for Jon) Also very glad that FINALLY there’s a Superman show with him in it as Superman, no “Everybody else is in Metropolis but not Clark yet” or it follows the saga of Lex’s… Read more »

This makes me wonder if Tyler’s version of Superman has always been the rebirth/reborn Superman. I’ve heard some say he’s new 52, but new 52 wasn’t married and he didn’t have a child. If they do decide that Superman and Lois have a son named Jon, then it will be in my opinion be an acknowledgment that this is a version of the rebirth/reborn Superman. Although they could decide to go the route of Superman and Lois having a daughter. Has there been any word on whether if they have a son or daughter?

Hmmm… I never considered them having a daughter. I always assumed it would be a boy.

The only story I remember reading once where Superman had a daughter was a Generations story (not Star Trek The Next Generation or its movie) when Superman and Lois had 2 kids. One was a boy and the other was a girl. I don’t remember if they were twins or the boy was older.

Actually, now that I think of it, wasn’t there a story where Superman was the only superhero that existed and he had twin girls, or am I wrong?

The biggest issue and problem I have with this, is the current fleshed out universe that we have with Supergirl and the use of Superman villains that have appeared. So either they go the direction of a prequel series set before Supergirl, which is unlikely as the actor Mehcad Brooks who plays Jimmy is busy with other projects. Or they follow on from what has happened already. I think a new show that isn’t connected to the Arrowverse would be the better course of direction. Thus allowing better creative control over the universe and it’s characters, I don’t really want… Read more »

If Superman and Lois have a child in this series, then it will be something that we have never seen before. A chance to see Superman as a father and a family man. I’m not counting the illegitimate child that Superman and Lois had in Superman Returns because Superman barely had any time with his son in that film. And I also like to point out that he wasn’t a “deadbeat dad” in Superman Returns because he didn’t know that Jason was his son. It’s a common misconception about that part of the film.Superman thought Richard was the boy’s father.… Read more »

Looking back at last year, I believe it was around this time that Batwoman was announced for this year. It’s possible. I’m guessing that if it did, Damien would probably be introduced on Batwoman’s show first then meet Jon and then eventually five or six years down the road they could have a Super Sons spin-off series. I don’t think that it would happen anytime soon though since Titans already have Superboy and Robin. But who knows? Maybe I’m wrong on that. Hopefully someday we will get a Superman series that starts more or less in his first year and goes from there but if you’re doing one with the Superman introduced on Supergirl then it makes more sense that we’re following him at the current point in his life and again it gives some distinction from what that show is doing. If you do Superman with a family it’s not an idea that by itself should somehow mean the end of action, adventure, and heroics for the character. But he’s from another planet and to think that a Krypton mans compatibility with a woman from Earth to have children is beyond IMO, a real stretch. And they’re going to do this as a way of introducing what will amount to one cornball episode after another. It is not a stretch. IMO that idea that whole “woman of Kleenex” thing is a lame cop out. A costume redesign would be nice. Now that the comics have brought back the classic look, and Brandon’s Kindom look with the trunks.. maybe go classic with just a few new touch’s, but nothing that makes a drastic change like the new Supergirl outfit. The classic look was way better for her, and I think would be great for Superman.

Classic is unlikely, but that terrible costume does need a redesign. I’m not sure we’ll get one, considering Kara’s new costume is very much based off of Tyler’s costume, but still. Honestly, I think Tyler needs to get just a little bit bigger and I’m very much in favor of the Reborn costume. It has a nice modern look without looking like edgelord’s first design like the ones they’re using now.

If they want to get a little more complicated, the Smallville S11 suit is a nice alternative and it would translate better on screen.

I think that is a fair assessment schnitz. I admit that Tyler’s Superman has had some problems, but I enjoy seeing him in the role. I look forward to seeing this version of Superman on a weekly scheduled program soon.

Why does Greg Berlant control ALL of the DC super hero shows? Although I would look forward to seeing a new Superman show, I fear that it would be bogged down with PC themes and a plethora of dull supporting characters with their mundane storylines and soap opera boredom. Just mix in the best qualities of Lois and Clark, The Adventures of Superman, and Smallville, and the show would be good. I do wish, however, that they got Brandon Routh and would leave the terrible DC Universe that is on the CW, and separate from those shows. I guess any… Read more »

If Warner Bros decides to make DC movies for a HBO Max series, maybe Brandon Routh could be Superman again for a HBO Max series. I’d would so watch that. I’m not sure if Greg Berlanti decides on all of the DC programs that the CW produces or not. Maybe he does. It’s an interesting question. I do wonder since Geoff Johns will be one of the executive producers, will he adapt or use any inspirations from his past works on his run on Superman comics for this series?

Although I do agree that some of the side plots and certain relationships are overdone in the Arrowverse, the reason for Berlanti being involved is because his shows are successful. Law & Order and Stargate were the only shows I really can remember have a few spinoff series. Here is an entire universe being built that is the TV match for the MCU. May not be perfect, but there would not be a Superman & Lois show being developed if not for the success of the Berlanti Arrowverse.

I think berlanti gets way more credit than he deserves. He only knows how to handle these characters in one way… all of the shows are pretty interchangeable and some have already pointed out the narration at the beginning, the team and the soapy themes. I feel like the actual characters get watered down as a result. I’d like to see different show runners for each show just for variety. WB has a history of putting unqualified people in positions of heading up an entire universe. We all know how the previous attempt turned out

Yes and there’s a fair amount of turmoil still going on from the ATT takeover/merger. We’re not hearing anything regarding big screen happenings. I think the WB/DC world is for the most part on hold. It’s all about money and ATT right now isn’t exactly raking in profits. There are so many other medias making qualified movies perhaps the DC end of things will find a more stable and willing partner.

I’ve really enjoyed the way they’ve written Tyler’s Superman. He’s humble, cheery and feels really genuine. All of his scenes are terrific and if they’re willing to put in for a whole series, sign me up! ^_^

You’ve got to be kidding. They tokenize Supergirl’s role by having her best him in a fight? Totally ridiculous and just one of the several outrageous stupid story lines that’s proved over and over that they’re not qualified to control his character. Absolutely nauseating.

1. Any story-line produced is going to be enjoyed or hated by at least some portion of the fan base. Some people love Lois & Clark, but hate Smallville and vice-versa for example. 2. Every portrayal has something that sticks out as awful, but also something that’s terrific. 3. I really, really, really, *really* do not care that Supergirl beat Superman in a fight, but especially on a show titled “Supergirl”. 4. I enjoy it, so that’s all that matters. I’m sorry that you don’t find that same enjoyment, but do I hope that you find something that takes your… Read more »

Wow. So I come back to this site because I was excited for this news and wanted to share in that excitement with others….and what I mostly see is negativity. I suddenly remember why I left. Oh well….

So you mean if some don’t care for the absolute slop they’ve made out of his role we’re supposed to except it any way? Sorry if I seem harsh but the way they’ve(CW) portrayed his character it’s beyond scary to think about how a series will turn out.

Not sure if what your implying by saying “that’s why I left” means we’re all supposed to role over for anything they give us as being wonderfully acceptable.

Hopefully Berlanti will have little to do with the creative end of the show. The new show does have a promising concept, but there is always the fear of too many side characters and nonsensicle extra subplots. If they focus on Superman, Lois and the kid, it should be fun. The suit MUST be changed up. Bring back Lex Luthor at least for Season 1, and do not involve the characters in the overrated and terrible crossover gimmick events.

I just had the *exact* same experience! All we can do is try, I guess. I hope you enjoy the series when it comes along! 🙂

This is really great news. I’m reaallllyyyyyy looking forward to seeing it in hopes that it will be a homage of sorts to Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman kind of show.

Sorry to read some negative comments, but everyone is entitled to an opinion. It’s good to finally have a Superman show coming soon.

Well said Kal-Ed. I’m also hoping that they incorporate a version of some Superman comic stories as well some past Superman movie, and television influences. A nod to some of the best Superman stories in history.

That is what makes this site so great. Even though we may disagree on different things, we all share the same love of Superman. I wish Warner Brothers’ film division felt like we do. Just go to any mall, theme park, or anywhere there is a crowd and you always see kids and adults wearing some Superman designed shirt. I am a Disney Vacation Club member and go to Disney Parks a lot, and I see more people wearing Superman shirts than any other character, and that includes Marvel characters, and Disney OWNS Marvel!
