Superman to Get New Comic Book Costume

DC Comics is giving Superman a slight costume upgrade.

This April, with the events of “Superman Reborn” shaking up Superman’s world, the Man of Steel will come out with a costume upgrade… namely the return of the red boots.

ComicBook.com has the first details…

The cover for Action Comics #977, by Andy Kubert, presents a tableau of Superman’s history – including the iconic Neal Adams cover to Superman #233, the opening salvo of the fan-favorite “Kryptonite Nevermore!” storyline. It’s perhaps worth noting that shortly after the death of the New 52 Superman, ComicBook.com speculated that “Kryptonite Nevermore!” could provide some insight as to the nature of his death, and possibly even the nature of his very being.

Also represented on the cover: Lois and Clark’s wedding from Superman: The Wedding Album, and the birth of Jonathan Kent from Convergence: Superman #2, indicating that following whatever changes are made to the character and/or his backstory in “Superman Reborn,” he still experienced those events. His first appearance at the Daily Planet in his Rebirth duds appears to be one of the other images.

YES!!! Much Better as much as I love the Rebirth Costume I always thought it was missing the boots. SUPERMAN is BACK!!! Well he’s been back since Rebirth! But Yeah BOOYAH!!! P.S. This costume upgrade is perfect. It’s the perfect blend or the old and new. The belt is great! The stupid collar has been gone (thank God lol) It’s awesome! oops and spoiler alert… Looks like Clark Kent is back as well! Maybe even his history will merge with New 52 Superman so that everyone in the Daily Planet will remember the marriage and birth of Jonathan Samuel Kent… Read more »

TBH, I like all the suits: classic, MOS, New 52, Rebirth, and now with Reborn. New 52 Earth-2 Kal-L was okay, and I don’t like the pre-Truth update. This is just a new addition to a series of suit likes.

UPDATE: I think if there is something that I may have to get use to would have to be the belt. IDK, the suit being simple in its design, even redesign, is key; but the belt, seems less simple and more complex. It’s better than Romita’s change pre-Truth, but it feels like it’s still on the same page. Which is why I feel the need to ask “why” in having that over Rebirth belt, or even the alternate design for the Rebirth suit which we saw but didn’t know what it meant. Come to think of it, why not use… Read more »

Eh, it’s gotten to the point where it’s really stupid. If not that, then ridiculous. And man can it be insane within the fan circles, reaching negative heights. Sorry, but no.

I think the reactions from the anti-trunks crowd have been just as obnoxious as anything the most over zealous pro-trunks advocates have ever dished out. From the usual tired and tedious “these ain’t ya daddy’s comics no more” type of dismissals or referring to the trunks as “undies” or “panties” to screeds accusing anyone who prefers the trunks as a design element for Superman’s costume of being somehow responsible for holding back the entire friggin comics medium from some loftier level of success and prestige.

But without his trunks, there’s an embarrassing outline of his underwear because of his tights!

Plus, it’s nice to have more red to accent the blue, as well as add something more whimsical. Superman is whimsical. Anything else is a heap o’ junk! 🙂

We have a winner! I think most should be able to rally behind this one and as stated above, it’s the perfect blend of old and new.

Not gonna lie, I’m really digging this one, think it has a perfect blend of colors and as stated multiple times, is the perfect marriage of old and new

Not pictured: the emblem on Superman’s cape.

Otherwise, this is really good. Let’s hope this design can stick longer than 12 months, as the redesigns have been plenty of late.

Much better. I could quibble about that belt design but he looks so much more like himself than he has in years so thumbs up! Glad that he will be Clark Kent again to. Looooong overdue.

..but if the trunks came back I wouldn’t mind that at all either because I never found that suit to be bad at all in the first place but it is cool that there can be trunkless designs that aren’t gobs of armor and seams.

I’ve been a superman fan for over 30 years, and I’ll be honest, I never was a fan of the ‘classic’ look, especially the red trunks.
I absolutely loved the New 52 suit (in fact most of the New 52 looks, especially Batman) from the collar to the segmented armour, and was gutted to see it go.
I have to admit, although not a huge fan of the rebirth look, it was starting to grow on me.
This, however, is just a slow backwards slide and demonstrates a lack of conviction and innovation.

Sweet. Quoting Cyrus from The Warriors: Caaannnn yoouuuuu diiiggggg iiitttttt!???
It just looks perfect. Hoping it would stay for a while. Perfect blending of the past and the future. I’ve got a good feeling Superman has earned his well-deserved comeback.

Looks great, good balance between a belted and trunks look. Very similar to the original New 52 Earth 2 Superman.
I need this in action figure form please?!

Give it another 5 or so years, and the trunks will return I’m sure… Fashion trends and all.
Now if only they would bring back the Yellow Oval on Batman’s suit as well.

Halle-freaking-lujah. It’s still not perfect (I never liked bits of the costumes be metal) and I admit to having grown to like the ‘gauntlets’, but this one looks good. Yay for the boots, but see how much difference even that tiny bit of yellow/gold in the belt makes? The belt design in itself is still a little overcomplicated, but the color is at least close to right this time.

They got rid of the metal cuffs, and the ridiculous blue boots. So that’s a plus.

Still too much blue though.

That’s the problem with all the people that hated the Trunks. They know what they don’t want, but can’t find a decent replacement.

It’s just so much blue!

Also, the belt reminds me of Batman’s new fang-belt.

So they just need to add the trunks! I agree regarding the fang-belt.

I love this!!! The boots really bring it together, and this belt and buckle design is better. Although I would have kept the metal “cuffs” or “gauntlets”, I can still get behind this look, for sure.

When I first heard that Superman was going to have a new suit I thought “His cape better not be blue!”
I like this, still think they should just go with the movie suit if they don’t want the trunks, but I like that red boots came back.
My biggest problem with the Rebirth suit was that it looked like he had a full leotard on with no boots.

Alright! The return of his bright red boots and the mild-mannered Clark Kent? I’m very excited for this! Love the first illustration, and I’m very glad they included Superman carrying the American flag. Just the fact that Clark is smiling because he’s excited to do his job adds something to the picture.

I still like the MoS suit just alil bit more, but This is definitely the best suit superman has ever worn in the comix! I Love the design of the belt (Finally!). But I also question why is it metallic? I think most artists won’t even draw it with that metallic finish. Just like how they stopped putting those weird squares on the n52 belt. It seems like such a tedious (and unnecessary) detail.
I’d also prefer the cape to be positioned much closer to the neckline. But that is also a small detail that varies from artist to artist.

Moving back in the right direction. Nice to see.
(Still can’t get that belt right. If only there were another way to break up all that blue… hmmmm 😉

Or at the least just make it a standard belt shape in red with a round yellow or gold buckle. I’ll never understand this need to repeat the S shield (or the shape of it) on his belt when he’s already got it prominently displayed on his chest. You wanna put it on him twice then put it back on his cape! At least that way it’s less visually redundant because you got one for the front and one for the back and it makes his cape more distinctive.

We live in a world of capitalistic glory and corporate logos are prominently displayed ad naseum, hell, my shoes have at least four logos each. That being said, I don’t mind that shape on the buckle as long as it isn’t the full symbol. And when did they take it off the cape? It was on both the new52 and the 1st Rebirth cape in every pic I’ve seen. There’s no reason to believe that it isn’t on this one as well.

Echoing what many others have already said, I love this redesign! I liked the New 52 costume a lot and I liked the original Rebirth costume, too, except I didn’t like the blue boots (or the floating belt buckle), so this is a very welcome change. I think it actually has the potential to be my new favorite.

The stories in Rebirth have been really good so far, and now we have an improved suit, too! Good stuff.

I’m a fan of the new costume mainly because it seems it is just that, a costume. Not a nanotech bio-armor blah blah. Just what Superman wears when he’s flying around being super. Simple, classic.
