“Superman” Saves Warner Bros. Studios While Linear TV Struggles

Man of Steel Delivers Box Office Heroics in Q3

Superman proved he’s still the hero Warner Bros. Discovery needs, driving the studio business to impressive double-digit growth in the company’s third-quarter earnings report. The iconic superhero helped propel studio revenues up 24 percent to $3.3 billion, alongside other releases like “Weapons” and “The Conjuring: Last Rites”.

The success comes as a bright spot for WBD during a challenging quarter that saw overall revenue decline 6 percent to $9 billion and a net loss of $148 million. While the Man of Steel couldn’t rescue the company’s struggling linear TV business—which saw revenues plummet 22 percent—his box office performance demonstrated the enduring power of Warner Bros.’ tentpole franchises.

CEO David Zaslav praised the studio leadership’s four-part strategy, which leverages major tentpoles like “Superman”, “Batman”, and “Wonder Woman” alongside “mini tentpoles” such as “Gremlins” and “Goonies”, plus disciplined original content.

“Our content has been underused,” Zaslav noted, pointing out that audiences haven’t seen Harry Potter in 14 years or Lord of the Rings in over a decade. The company is banking on this deep library of iconic IP, with a new Lord of the Rings film already in development with Peter Jackson for 2027.

While “Superman” delivered at the box office, the studio segment faces headwinds ahead due to a difficult Q4 comparison with a previous HBO Max library licensing deal. Still, the superhero’s performance proves that Warner Bros.’ tentpole strategy remains a powerful formula in an increasingly fragmented entertainment landscape.

Unfortunately, like the vast majority of legacy media companies out there, WB is facing a lose/lose situation. Linear TV is dying and streaming is very hard to monetize.
