“Superman & Lois” Series Finale: A Heartfelt Goodbye to the Kent Family

Spoiler Warning: The following article includes details on the series finale of “Superman & Lois”.

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, the showrunners and stars of “Superman & Lois” opened up about the emotional series finale that brought The CW’s superhero era to a poignant close. The episode, titled “It Went By So Fast,” offered fans a beautiful and unexpected journey through Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s entire life together.

The finale took viewers on a remarkable 32-year journey, showing the complete arc of the Kent family’s life. What makes this ending truly special is how it diverged from traditional superhero narratives, focusing instead on the power of family, hope, and love.

Tyler Hoechlin, who portrayed Clark Kent/Superman, shared his appreciation for the show’s ultimate message. “Family had always been very important,” he said, “but it got emphasized with COVID where everything in the world stopped except for the relationships that we had with people.”

The most heart-wrenching aspect of the finale was the portrayal of Lois and Clark’s final years. Elizabeth Tulloch, who played Lois, revealed that the storyline involving her character’s breast cancer was intentionally realistic. The writers chose to show both characters ultimately becoming human, facing the same challenges as everyone else.

Showrunner Brent Fletcher explained their unique approach: “We wanted to show the totality of their lives… not stopping a Doomsday or Brainiac. That’s not what he remembers when he shuffles off the mortal coil. He remembers his grandkids, moments of forgiveness, and all the things that are good and right in the world.”

A fun behind-the-scenes detail emerged about the finale’s casting. David Giuntoli (Elizabeth Tulloch’s real-life husband) made a cameo as the adult version of Jonathan Kent, which created some hilarious moments on set. Tulloch shared a particularly funny anecdote about Giuntoli whispering “I love you, Mommy” and breaking her concentration.

The production team also made a touching decision to include crew members’ families in the finale’s aging montage, truly emphasizing the show’s family-like atmosphere.

When asked about potentially creating a spinoff series showing the years Superman fought alongside his two Superboy sons, showrunner Todd Helbing was open but satisfied. “If James Gunn called us up, I would say yes,” he admitted, but stressed that they were proud of what they accomplished in four seasons.

For fans of Tyler Hoechlin, there’s good news. He expressed interest in potentially returning to the superhero genre, even joking about playing a villain next time.

As the Arrowverse comes to a close, “Superman & Lois” has provided a fitting, emotional conclusion that celebrates the true essence of Superman: not just a hero who saves the world, but a man who loves deeply and creates a lasting legacy of hope.

What a beautiful ending. It is nice to see the superman story end in a satisfying way like this. There are obvious things that could have been done different but when I keep revisiting the video clips on Youtube I know the episode had gotten to me (in a good way).

I remember a few years ago I was debating with someone about Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman. And I had said that he will never disappoint me because of how great he is in the role. And while I’m sad to see that the show has ended, I am very happy to say that Tyler never disappointed me as Superman. The same can be said about Bitsie Tulloch’s Lois Lane. Bitsie really captured the heart of Lois Lane. And we the audience really cared about her. I’m really going to miss these versions of the characters. But I am forever grateful that… Read more »
