Superman is Guinness World Record’s Longest-Running Videogame Character

With this week’s launch of “Injustice 2”, Superman now holds the Guinness World Record for being the longest running videogame character, enduring longer than gaming megastars such as PAC-Man and Mario.

According to the official GuinessWorldRecords.com website, Superman achieved this statues on May 16, 2017 when Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition editor Stephen Daultrey handed Ed Boon from NetherRealm Studios with the World Record certificate with Superman having been a videogame character for 38 years and 62 days.

Superman’s videogame debut came in December 1978 with the release of the “Superman” game for the Atari 2600. Since then, the Man of Steel has featured in many videogames, with varying success.

Look out for this record – plus many more – in the new Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition annual, releasing in September 2017.

Thank Christ the paddles from Pong don’t count as characters, I guess? I mean, that’s the weirdest record for Superman to hold, considering the quality of the majority of games he’s been in.

Now if WB could manage to give Supes a good Superman game, that would be an achievement too.

I came here to say the same 😉 I liked the Superman Returns game; flying around Metropolis and smashing stuff as Bizarro was a blast.

I really wish someone would make a series of games for Superman on the level of the Arkham Trilogy. And none of this, “but Superman’s really hard to make a movie/TV show/video game for because he’s so powerful” nonsense.

man, i agree. i was late to the arkham games, but once i started with them they were a game changer, excuse the pun. i don’t understand why we can’t have similar game play applied to superman! detective mode/x-ray vision, rappelling then gliding/flying, etc. if they claim he’s too powerful, the game could use a cue from superman the movie, and use a young clark learning his powers and progress through the game. not to mention the rogue gallery he has…as for the superman returns game, i have to admit to enjoying it, though repetitive after a while, but it… Read more »

A shame the Superman games stink. That has to change.

Ugh. Did it have to be the game where he’s the villain that put him on the map for this?
