At a recent DC Studios press event, “Superman” director James Gunn responded to questions about his upcoming film’s relevance in the political landscape of Donald Trump’s second presidential term. With the highly anticipated superhero movie set to premiere in July 2025, six months into Trump’s administration, journalists pressed Gunn on how his vision of Superman fits into the current cultural moment.
Gunn offered a perspective that positioned Superman as somewhat removed from contemporary political divisions. “In some ways, I would say it’s the right Superman because I don’t think he’s a part of the cultural moment,” Gunn explained. “He’s a character that stands for something that is solid, for basic human morals, basic human integrity, the basic belief in protecting others the weak and being good to people and being honest. He stands for what I think of as the rules that don’t change.”
The conversation took a more politically charged turn when another reporter raised questions about diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in Hollywood. The journalist noted the increasingly cautious approach studios have adopted regarding DEI matters following President Trump’s campaign against such programs in government and broader American society.
Rather than directly engaging with the political implications, Gunn chose to distance himself from the controversy. “I know what you’re saying. I understand your words, but I’ve been off working on stories for three years, and I just try to tell the best stories I possibly can, and that’s all I care about,” he responded. The director revealed he has significantly reduced his news consumption and social media presence, citing both mental health reasons and the demanding schedule of simultaneously running a studio while directing “Superman”.
Gunn concluded with a firm statement about his creative approach: “We’re just off trying to make the best movies we can in the best way we can. No matter who is telling me who I’m supposed to put in my movie, for whatever reason, I don’t give a shit. I was always about creating the best story possible with the best characters possible. It was that way, you know, five years ago, and it’s that way today.”
The film is scheduled to debut in July 2025, when audiences will have the opportunity to see how Gunn’s vision of Superman translates to the screen during this politically charged period in American history.

Superman is neither a conservative nor a liberal. Yes, he was created as the “Champion of the Oppressed”, but by the Silver Age, he was basically a superpowered lawman, always talking about the importance of law and order. Nowadays, he walks the centrist line and doesn’t comment on anything of actual consequence, like most characters designed for mass media consumption. It makes sense because DC probably doesn’t want him to stand for anything too controversial.
I don’t know about that. Recent comics pretty much have Superman commenting about recent events. Especially if you read Absolute Superman.
I appreciate Gunn not getting sucked into a politically divisive conversation about the movie. Most people go to the movies as an escape from the day to day political climate. Superman doesn’t need a political affiliation. He just does what is right
But Superman created by Siegel has always included political and social commentary.
Just because you want to escape into fantasy doesn’t mean real life doesn’t catch up to you.
Gunn had previously made comments that have aligned him with the rest of the so called entertainment industry. This is why the movie industry has had so many ups and downs as they’ve alienated, at least here in the US,.. half of America.
I personally favored Gunn’s previous comments. He said nothing wrong. Looking at the current job environment, the ups and downs do not limit to movie industry.
Gunn probably saw the backlash against Anthony Mackie when discussing Captain America for “Brave New World.” Gunn and probably thought to himself, “Nope, I’m not taking the bait. I don’t need the backlash that Anthony Mackie got.” – – – – LOL …… All joking aside, I like what Gunn said about Superman just standing for basic human morales, integrity, protecting the weak and being honest and good to people. I absolutely love that and that’s the Superman that I want to see.
