The Movie

Is “Superman” a reboot?

Yes. “Superman” is a completely new take on Superman. It comes at the story as if there’s never been any other Superman movies before it. Fans should approach it in the same way.

What songs can be heard in the movie?

When watching “Superman” you’ll hear are a number of songs played during the movie that aren’t part of John Murphy and David Fleming’s musical score. They are:

Character Powers & Abilities

How underpowered is Superman?

While James Gunn may have deliberately created a “less powerful” Superman to make conflicts more engaging, it should be noted that the movie makes it clear that this version of the character hasn’t lost a fight in the 3 years he’s been active as Superman. He only loses his first public fight against the Hammer of Boravia (who in fact is Ultraman, who is a clone of Superman with the same powers, but helped by Lex Luthor’s ability to predict Superman’s every move). While it may also appear that Superman needs help against the kaiju, it’s more due to the fact that he’s both trying to save people while finding a way to neutralize the creature without killing it. The only other real struggles he has is when fighting Ultraman (with the same issues mentioned above), and when he’s trying to escape the proton lake in the Pocket Universe while being attacked by Luthor’s raptors and trying to keep Baby Joey above the river.

How can Mister Terrific inject nanobots into Superman without his knowledge?

Some speculate that Superman should have detected both the injection process and the nanobots in his bloodstream, but being the trusting person he is, he had no reason to speculate that any such process had taken place. As to how it was done, for all we know the nanobots could have been airborne objects absorbed simply by breathing.

Does Superman kill Ultraman?

The film presents a moral gray area with Ultraman’s fate. Since Ultraman is described as having “no brain” and being technically artificial, Superman’s indirect role in his destruction (moving away from the falling bus) could be interpreted as self-defense rather than murder. Furthermore, we don’t know that a being with Superman’s powers would not survive being sent through a black hole. It’s unclear whether Ultraman lived or died.

Why did Krypto hold back against Lex Luthor but not against Superman?

Krypto likely has the intelligence to modulate his strength based on his target’s durability. He knows Superman can withstand his full power, but recognizes that Lex Luthor is fragile. This suggests Krypto is more intelligent and emotionally aware than a typical pet, understanding the difference between play-fighting and genuine combat.

Plot Logic & Consistency

What happened to all the Kryptonite on Earth?

The film establishes that no Kryptonite exists on Earth anymore, but doesn’t explain why. This could be because Superman or other agencies collected and disposed of it for safety reasons, or it naturally decayed over time. Lex’s reliance on Metamorpho to create synthetic Kryptonite suggests genuine Kryptonite is truly unavailable, not just hard to obtain.

How can Metamorpho transform into Kryptonite without samples?

The film establishes that no Kryptonite exists on Earth anymore; however, people know of its existence and Lex Luthor has likely come across its chemical composition. Therefore, it’s not difficult to assume Lex gave the formula to Metamorpho, allowing him to form it with his hands.

How can the Engineer’s nanites interface with Kryptonian technology when Superman’s robots couldn’t?

The Superman Robots could interface with the Kryptonian technology; however, they hadn’t been able to retrieve the rest of Jor-El and Lara’s damaged message. How the Engineer was able to do so isn’t explained… she just was. Perhaps the Engineer’s nanites were specifically designed for hacking (vs. the robots’ maintenance functions).

Why were the PlanetWatch Raptors able to survive the anti-proton river?

The Raptors’ survival contradicts Mister Terrific’s warning about the river’s lethality. Possible explanations include: their armor provided temporary protection or the anti-proton river’s effects aren’t instantaneous. We see that Luthor’s Raptors’ armor is resilient and protects them from extreme damage and harm.

Did Luthor’s PlanetWatch Raptors survive Superman’s heat-vision?

Yes. We see that they are either unconscious or incapacitated, but not dead. The Raptors’ armor is resilient and protects them from extreme damage and harm.

How were millions evacuated from Metropolis so quickly?

We don’t know how much time elapses during this portion of the film. Obviously it serves the narrative of the film, and therefore isn’t necessarily something to be overly analyzed.

Character Relationships & Identity

How will Lois keep her relationship with Superman secret from her Daily Planet colleagues?

Since Perry White and Jimmy Olsen already know about Lois and Superman’s relationship, maintaining the Clark Kent secret identity becomes more complicated if Clark and Lois’ relationship is exposed. However, the film clearly shows the two (Lois and Clark) keeping their relationship a secret from their Daily Planet colleagues.

Who actually came up with the name “Superman”?

The film doesn’t clearly establish this, unlike previous versions where Lois Lane typically coins the name. Given the altered S-shield design that looks less like an “S,” the name’s origin becomes more mysterious. The film hints that Clark may have suggested it himself during interviews, but this isn’t definitively confirmed.

Political & International Consequences

What are the international repercussions of Hawkgirl killing the President of Boravia?

The film doesn’t address the consequences of a US-backed hero assassinating a foreign leader. This likely indicates that the DCU operates on comic book logic where superhero actions don’t follow real-world international law, or it’s setting up future conflicts where governments try to regulate metahuman activities.

How is Guy Gardner allowed to be a corporate hero instead of a space cop?

Guy Gardner’s allegiance to the Green Lantern Corps isn’t compromized by his loose affiliation with the Justice Gang. This may be addressed in future films or TV shows.

Technology & Science Questions

What does the new S-shield design mean?

The film doesn’t explain how the public connected this abstract symbol, which is based on the “Kingdom Come” comic books, to the name “Superman”.

How does the Engineer’s technology work?

Nanites grant the Engineer control over technology and the ability to interface with computer systems. While her comic book origins involve replacing her blood with nanite fluid, the film doesn’t fully explain her transformation process or motivations.

Villain Motivations & Plans

What are the Engineer’s personal motivations beyond working for Lex?

The Engineer’s personal motivations go deeper than simply working for Lex Luthor, as she holds a distinctive view of herself and her purpose. In an interview with DC Studios’ Showcase Podcast, María Gabriela de Faría (who plays the role) says that The Engineer would not consider herself a villain but rather a “product of her environment,” doing what she believes is necessary. Her overarching drive is a profound desire to be “part of that change” for a “better world”. It’s suggested that a “trauma when she was a kid” may have contributed to her intense need to contribute to this change. Despite being described as a “villainy person” by others, she sees herself as a “good person at heart that’s extremely broken,” willing to team up with Lex Luthor to “get rid of what… he believes are evil aliens, Superman” as a means to achieve her vision for a transformed world.

Why would Lex Luthor want to be a land baron when he can create pocket dimensions?

While on the surface this follows the tradition of movie Lex Luthors having real estate obsessions, the land grab is actually a cover for his real goal of discrediting Superman.

Was the full Kryptonian recording real?

Yes. The movie goes to great lengths to confirm that the second half of Jor-El and Lara’s message recovered by The Engineer is legitimate and not a ruse by Lex Luthor. Director James Gunn also confirmed that the recording from Jor-El and Lara is authentic. The whole point is for Superman to realize that he is in control of his decisions. That his choices are what define him, rather than some preconceived mission handed down by parents he never knew. It’s the parents who raised him (The Kents) who have given him the real motivation behind his actions to help people and do what’s right.

Gunn drew inspiration from John Byrne’s comic run depicting Krypton as “cold and sterile,” explaining that this twist serves the film’s emotional arc.

“Superman thinks he is doing something because it is his destiny,” Gunn explained. “Along the way he discovers through the love of the people who are actually his parents that he’s doing these things not because of someone else, but because of himself.”

While this twist has shocked many fans, it’s far from the first time Superman stories have explored the darker implications of Kryptonian superiority and parental expectations. Read more here.

Future DCU Setup

What does Supergirl’s characterization mean for the DCU’s tone?

Supergirl’s party-girl personality contrasts with Superman’s earnestness, suggesting future DCU films may explore different tonal approaches for different characters. Her upcoming solo film is based on “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” which deals with trauma and revenge, indicating a darker tone than Superman’s hopeful message.

How many members are really in the Justice Gang?

The oversized Hall of Justice and historical murals suggest a larger organization, but only three active members are shown. The building appears to be under renovation, indicating the team is in a transitional phase, possibly building toward the formation of the traditional Justice League.

What happens to the Engineer now that Lex is imprisoned?

With Lex Luthor arrested, the Engineer’s future remains unclear. She’s expected to appear in future DCU projects, possibly as a reluctant ally or reformed villain. Her advanced technology makes her valuable to various organizations, potentially setting up new conflicts or alliances.

Resolution & Consequences

Did exposing Luthor’s plot solve all of Superman’s problems?

The film suggests that revealing Lex’s manipulation restored public faith in Superman. Real-world political and social issues probably wouldn’t disappear so easily, and the underlying questions about alien intervention and government oversight remain unaddressed.

How did Lex Luthor get inside the Fortress of Solitude?

The Fortress of Solitude can only be accessed by Superman, Supergirl and Krypto because the Kryptonian technology recognizes their DNA. Lex Luthor was able to access the Fortress because Ultraman was a Superman clone, who shared the same DNA.

What are the long-term implications of the anti-proton river incident?

The creation and use of such a destructive environment raises questions about containment and future safety. The technology that created the pocket dimension could be used for various purposes, potentially setting up future storylines involving dimensional threats or scientific advancement.

Final Thoughts

Many of these questions stem from James Gunn’s attempt to balance comic book authenticity with realistic consequences, sometimes creating logical gaps. The film prioritizes emotional storytelling and character relationships over strict scientific or political accuracy, following superhero movie conventions while trying to establish a new cinematic universe.

Some inconsistencies may be addressed in future films, while others represent the kind of suspension of disbelief that superhero movies typically require. The questions themselves often reveal the complexity of adapting comic book characters for modern, politically aware audiences while maintaining the sense of wonder and hope that defines Superman.
