Out of curiosity, isn’t there an Elvis song by same title?

In fact it was his last #1 song in the U-S. And it was recorded about this time 50 years ago.

Yeah. IIRC it was on the last album he ever made. I have a memory of it from my early childhood because the LP itself was blue and that song was one of the first Elvis songs I ever heard and he died not long after that. At the time I was too young to have any real awareness of who he was outside of being a singer who had a cape that looked like Captain Marvel.

I wonder if they will use that same song in this upcoming episode.

Actually, it was originally a single, recorded at the Jan/Feb 1969 sessions at the “American Sound Studios” in Memphis.

Elvis released another 10+ albums between then and August of 1977, when he died.

Great song, though. From the same session, I’ve always thought “Do You Know Who I Am” would be a good pick for a Superman/related episode.

That gets into the whole Marvel copyright thing and I like the Marvel Comics characters with that name Carol included, but when I hear the name Captain Marvel it’s Billy Batson’s alter ego that I first think of. Calling him “Shazam” feels too much like calling Dan Garret’s Blue Beetle “Kaji Dha!” or calling a Power Ranger “Morphin Time!”

Did somebody say, “It’s morphin’ time?” 🙂

Wouldn’t it be more accurate if a Power Ranger was called “Mastodon” or “Pterodactyl” or “Tyrannosaurus”? When they call out it’s morphin’ time, they get ready to morph. But unless they call their animal names, they don’t morph… at least in the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. 🙂

. Well, you wouldn’t want a Super Sentai/Power Ranger or a Kamen Rider using their actual henshin call as their name when they already have a functioning superhero name to begin with. So for me Shazam is the word to summon the powers not the name of the hero Billy becomes. That’s Billy’s henshin call. (Ever notice the bolt in the Power Rangers logo is just a backwards and angled version of the one on the Captains uniform?)

What about “Zordon”? I mean Billy is now calling himself “Shazam”, named after the wizard “Shazam” instead of calling himself “Captain Marvel”, so wouldn’t it be more like calling the “Power Rangers” “ Zordon” or “ Zordons” after their mentor “Zordon” instead of calling themselves “ Power Rangers”?
Sorry about the quotations, I’m just trying to be accurate with the names.

I hope that my last comment wasn’t perceived as me being rude because of the quotations for the names of each character. I hope that I didn’t offend you MattComics or anyone else.

It’s ok Spidey. Yeah, the Shazam renaming is just awkward and for my money, he’s Captain Marvel. But then so is Marvel’s Captain Marvel. Obviously branding demands a distinction but still..

I know that Marvel has a character named Sentry who basically is there version of Superman. What are your thoughts on this MattComics? I have read some of his comic books, he is interesting, but I do wonder how Marvel can make a character that is so much like Superman.
