In the latest Superman Homepage Member Poll we asked you the following question:
Should Superman be the sole survivor of Krypton?
This one was close! Superman was once considered Krypton’s sole survivor, but over the years Supergirl, Krypto, Zod, even Jor-El, and other Kryptonians have been shown to have survived their planet’s destruction. Superman fans are nearly split on whether Superman should be the only survivor of his home planet, with only 4% margin between the votes.

I found this one kind of impossible to vote on. I guess my feeling is I don’t think a strict and rigid enforcement of the “last son” moniker is necessary to ensure that the destruction of Krypton feels like the loss and tragedy that it should. As for Superman being unique, I don’t know. There’s pros and cons to that. I think though that Superman being an alien is the most sci-fi aspect of him and you kinda cut him off from that if you say nothing and on one else can be from Krypton. BUT I think writers and… Read more »
I’m happy about these results. I like that Superman has a cousin that also survived Krypton’s destruction. That and I like the Supergirl character.
If Krypto was not included in the survivor list, I would be fine with no other Kryptonians. But since he counts as a Kryptonian, sole survivor does not work for me because I am a huge Krypto fan.
Kandor, Supergirl, and Krypto are crucial. The Phantom Zone villains too, as the Phantom Zone and Kandor are crucial to Superman lore and his backstory with Brainiac and such.
If Superman can’t be special if he’s not the only Kryptonian? He wouldn’t have lasted as long as he did.
Doomsday is also Kryptonian. I always thought that was an interesting part of Doomsday’s backstory. Since Doomsday is from Krypton, could he in theory display the same kind of powers Superman has. I know that he can evolve, but what about those powers?
Offhand I would say since Doomsday was basically a genetically engineered monster his cellular structure is different enough from a standard Kryptonian that he wouldn’t be effected the same way by yellow sun. Besides Superman has already has villains who have powers that match his.
True. I guess that’s what makes Doomsday so frightening. He’s basically a kryptonian frankenstien monster.
There is definitely a caveat to this answer. I vote no, I like Supergirl and even the Phantom Zoners, but I also don’t want the mythos crawling with newly discovered Kryptonians. The New Krypton story was a little ridiculous, literally hundreds, maybe thousands, of Superman powered people running around kind diminishes the impact he has.
That’s a prime example of the kind of overkill I was talking about. I think this is kind of the problem with Argo and Kandor to. If you have whole cities full of people left then I think it just takes some of the dramatic impact out of Superman’s origin story if only because it’s that much harder to feel like Krypton is actually gone. Whereas if it’s barely a handful of relics and characters and then the criminals locked in the Zone, the destruction still more or less retains the impact because Krypton still no longer exists in any… Read more »
For me I like the idea of Superman being the sole survivor of Krypton and then I would’ve done something like TAS or comics where the only other survivors would’ve been from the phantom zone and Supergirl would come from Krypton’s sister planet like in TAS which was also destroyed but have Superman look after her like she is family like how it was once again in TAS.
In TAS Brainiac himself was a creation of Krypton that survived and there was a metaphorical Kandor in the form of the orb he had that stored all of the planets history in a way that Superman could interact with.
