Sasha Calle Cast as Supergirl for “The Flash” Movie

Director Andy Muschietti announced today that “The Young & The Restless” actor Sasha Calle has been cast to play Supergirl in the upcoming movie “The Flash”.

According to Deadline, the Boston, MA-born Colombian actress is the first Latina Supergirl ever in DC and was chosen from more than 425 actresses who auditioned.

“I saw more than four hundred auditions. The US,Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia,” director Andy Muschietti told Deadline. “The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role.”

Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script by Christina Hodson, “The Flash” stars Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, Sasha Calle and Billy Crudup. The film arrives in theaters November 4, 2022.

So they casted a new Supergirl. I honestly don’t know anything about this actress. So I guess I’ll just have to wait and see how she is in the role.

I did hear a rumor that Brandon Routh might make a cameo in the Flash movie as his own Superman. It’s just a rumor but I hope it’s true. Brandon even commented on the rumor back in November. I think he said it’s possible. If he does show up, I’m hoping that it would lead to a Brandon Routh Superman HBOmax series. It seems like WB might be going for the multiverse angle. So it would be a smart move if they did. A Superman for every genre. Hoechlin on CW,Routh for HBOmax, and Cavill for movies. And maybe even… Read more »

Crap. This effectively means they’re not just moving away from Cavill’s Superman, they’re moving away from Superman on film as a whole. The Flash is the foundations for the DCEU from here on out, this is not good news for us. Assuming the Flash does well, the best we can hope for is a completely separate Superman film series, like Reeves’ “The Batman”.

Who would’ve thought that one day, Supergirl would be moving to the silver screen and Superman would be swept under the CW rug.

I need a drink.

I think it’s odd that they made this announcement before Supergirl’s tv series finishes. It would’ve more sense to me if they waited till after the final episode to make this announcement. But that’s just me.

The CW shows are small potatoes, they have a very particular audience and it’s not big. It’s why they’ve been so liberal with letting them use some of their A-names (which was unheard of back during the days of Smallville). They will rush every big announcement they can to generate as much hype as possible. It’s why they dropped the bombshell about Keaton’s Batman as early as they could.

I’m not sure what the ratio is of viewers for the CW. Does anyone know? I’m very curious about how many fans will tune into see the Superman and Lois premier.

It differs from show to show, obviously, but for reference, season 2 of Supergirl (when the show was at its height on the network) had an average of 3.12 million viewers. Season 1, by contrast, had 9.81 million viewers. The punchline here is that at 9.81 the show couldn’t survive on the CBS, which is why they moved it to the CW, where it survived with a far, far smaller audience. Flash, the most popular of these shows, managed a 4.62 in its first season, with a steady drop since then. Eventually, all of these shows settle at about 2… Read more »

First bottles on me… let me get my hat! I agree with you. It looks like we’re officially moving away from Superman which is extremely disappointing. I keep hearing rumors of JJ doing a fresh version, but I don’t care for JJ or his disciples (Kurtzman, etc.). I don’t nor will ever understand the aversion to Superman and am tired of the same old excuses that he’s too powerful or unrelatable, or that he’s too hard to write for. I wish Henry could have been given more of a chance, he never really got to really sink his teeth into… Read more »

The most frustrating thing is that WB sabotaged Superman (and, by extension, the DCEU) from the word go. Controversial or not, they had something with Man of Steel. And then, they came out and publicly stated that they expected the movie to hit the 1 billion dollars mark at the box office. Which, for a new film franchise in 2013, was by all means *impossible*. Every terrible decision they’ve made since then can be attributed to them trying to save face for being dunces. And Superman is the sacrificial lamb for their stupidity. Make no mistake, they’re not finding Superman… Read more »

It wasn’t so much MoS as it was BvS’ BO performance. It was expected to be much higher than it was, especially with its overblown budget and that, coupled with consistently bad reviews, sunk the Cavill Superman beyond repair. Through no fault of Cavill, mind you, but he was given lesser material across three films. A shame, but he was largely let down by Zack Snyder as much, if not moreso, than the studio itself.

The Box Office performance of BvS was unsatisfactory to WB, but BvS happened *because* the studio wasn’t satisfied with the 668mil that Man of Steel pulled in. Then, they butchered the theatrical release, with their focus being on Batman and damaged the Superman brand in the process.

Studio projections for these movies can be stupidly demanding, but to publicly state them before a film even premieres is digging one’s hole. They found themselves exposed and had to rectify their mistake.

I think it hurt also that they shied away from the earnestness of the character. Creators aren’t constantly trying to apologize for his character. I’m not comparing marvel to Dc nor am I saying I want dc movies to be the same as marvel films, but they did not shy away from who captain America is, they leaned all the way in and audiences responded. He is arguably one of the most popular characters in the Mcu because he they were unabashed about who he is. They made Superman’s character very generic.

You are absolutely correct with this. The billion dollar benchmark was ridiculous. Movies that made less for sequels, it made enough money for a sequel. I don’t believe the right people have ever been in charge of the DC properties. Even now I would not say that. I agree that they had something with man of steel. while it was not the home run I was hoping for, there was enough there to build off of in a direct follow up. Throwing Batman in was completely reactionary and the fact that BvS underperformed also tells you that name alone does… Read more »

I don’t think WB was necessarily wrong to expect more out of the box office for MOS. If they were expecting a billion that’s too much, but certainly I think if general audiences really liked and embraced the movie I think it should have been able to pull in at least $750-$800 million. As it was, though, I think general audience reception was lukewarm. They didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it. It was just okay and didn’t do enough to really draw people back for repeat viewings and really create a positive word of mouth. I mean, if Aquaman can… Read more »

In 2013? These are pretty far fetched numbers for a new series. At the time, the only super-hero movie to pull an easy billion was Avengers (opening the gates for that mark for almost every movie in the future). The Dark Knight series didn’t hit that mark until WB fudged the numbers with repeated showings. Man of Steel outperformed every Marvel movie before the Avengers and not by a small margin. Captain America pulled in about 370 mil, Thor something around 450, Iron Man 2 (a sequel to the movie that started the MCU and which was universally liked) 630… Read more »

As I understand it, if and when Superman does return to the big screen (as we all know he will), it will be someone other than Henry Cavill. I think WB are going to focus on Superman on the small screen and Supergirl on the big screen for the next few years before bringing Superman back to the new movies with a new cast and a new director (JJ Abrams? I don’t know).

Meant that to read “either they *could* dye it..” As in that’s an option. I guess there’s nothing out of bounds about Kara being a brunette instead of a blonde but it is a visual design distinction that I usually associate with that character same way I would Clark with his dark hair.

IF they are moving away from Superman on film it would be just rather typical of WB to blame the character or think his not being a girl that’s somehow the problem instead of to truly and thoughtfully examine anything to do with their own mistakes and misfires with him.

They probably will, especially if Superman & Lois doesn’t work out, but I have to keep hammering this point specifically so they don’t get away with it: they were pitched Superman stories *several times* in the last thirty years and only two panned out. They were pitched Superman stories a few times in the last *three* years (one of them by Henry and the director of MI: Fallout, universally beloved action movie) and they specifically turned them down. They’re going with Supergirl, because she’s low risk and will fit in their new angle of B-listers as a draw away from… Read more »

Correct, it doesn’t need to be one or the other, but this definitely reeks of their ‘Superman no longer works’ garbage. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, they need to move away from the stoic versions of Superman we got in Returns and The Snyder Films. Superman needs to have charm, charisma and a personality. It’s not the character that’s the problem, it’s the aversion to writing the character as is that’s the problem. I love the marvel films but don’t need to see that style emulated with dc, but they are true to their characters and… Read more »

I’ve been reading comments on this news and I see a lot of people are assuming that the casting of the new Supergirl means the end of Cavill’s Superman. However I’m not seeing any evidence or indication that that’s the case. All we know so far is that Sasha Calle has been cast to play Supergirl and that some are jumping to the conclusion that Cavill is out of the Superman role because of it. Did his contract expire for the part? Was he fired or did he quit? My point is there’s been no word yet on what will… Read more »

It has been the rumour for a while now. This is the reported climate at WB, it was either going to be Superman or Supergirl. Stupid of WB to go that route, but that’s what they’re allegedly doing. There won’t be any definitive announcement (they never announce endings, it’s bad business), but based on inside information that we have access to so far, bringing Supergirl on to the Flash means she will be replacing Superman, with maybe a Cavill cameo here or there in other movies. They’re doing about the same with Batman, probably using Keaton’s Batman as a mentor… Read more »

Yes, but not in any movies of his own. The best possible scenario is a sizable role in Black Adam, which has yet to be confirmed. Otherwise, if they do go ahead and give him a portion in other films, it will be “in and out”, Tony Stark in Spider-Man Homecoming at best. Even that’s not set in stone at the moment.

I understand the point about the hair color (and I agree), but the fact she’s Latina raises my eyebrow a bit more. Particularly, the fact that they didn’t just happen to cast a Latina actress, but that they seem to have looked specifically for a Latina actress for the role (based on where they auditioned from). Which creates a bit of a contrast with the very, very white Cavill. Which is to say that, based on this small discrepancy, I hope they do one of the post-Crisis versions of Supergirl, instead of Kara. I doubt it, because recognizability, but it’s… Read more »

Maybe they’re going with Supergirl is also a last survivor of Krypton approach but not from the hose of El. But then how would it explain the S she would wear if she’s not from that family? Unless say Superman gives her a suit with the symbol. Maybe she doesn’t wear the suit yet for this film. Or maybe she’s from another dimension where instead of Superman who was the last survivor of Krypton, she was the last one. And that the Flash will bring her over to his world by the end of the film. She will probably be Kara and they will either not bother explaining it or they will come up with an alt universe explanation. Which I don’t necessarily mind (outside of the fact that I really, really don’t care for Kara), I’m just saying; if they’re going to go out of their way to specifically cast a Latina, I would assume they intend to so something with that.

I think Routh welcomed her to the fold. Cain has been excommunicated for his political opinions. Welling wouldn’t even pretend he was a Superman actor when he was a Superman actor. Cavill understandably hasn’t said anything yet. Newbern and Daly don’t count. And the Reeves are dead.
