Review – “Supergirl: The Complete Third Season” on Blu-ray

Supergirl Season 1Reviewed by: Steve Younis

On September 18, 2018 “Supergirl: The Complete Third Season” will be released on Blu-ray and DVD from Warner Home Video.

As this website has reviewed the entire third season already, the following review will focus solely on the Bonus Material included in this home video release.

Fans can purchase the set which, in addition to all 23 super-powered episodes, contains the DC Crossover, the show’s 2017 Comic-Con panel, featurettes, and more.

In Season Three, Kara Danvers grapples with the sacrifices she’s made personally while saving National City as Supergirl. She even considers covering up her human identity altogether. Being human and vulnerable is hard. Maybe she’s better off embracing her alien DNA and only being the “Girl of Steel.” As Kara struggles with her path forward, she continues to work with Hank Henshaw and her sister, Alex, at the Department of Extranormal Operations to battle all threats to National City, including new villains Morgan Edge, and the “Worldkiller,” known as Reign. Everything Kara’s ever known and everyone she’s ever loved will be tested in all 23 supercharged Supergirl adventures.

BLU-RAY FEATURES:

The Best of DC TV’s Comic-Con Panels San Diego 2017: If, like me, you weren’t lucky enough to attend the 2017 San Diego Comic-Con, then Warner Bros. Television has been nice enough to include highlights from the SDCC experience. The “Supergirl” panel, and indeed all The CW’s superhero show panels, are included in this collection, featuring the cast and executive producers discussing the third season of the show.

Inside the Crossover: Crisis on Earth-X: Host Hector Navarro sits down with the executive producers from “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl,” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” to discuss the “Crisis on Earth-X” crossover event (of which all four episodes are included in this collection). The five gentlemen sit around in comfy couches chatting about what goes in to creating these crossovers, how this one differed from last year’s crossover, and how Robert Rovner (executive producers on “Supergirl”) dealt with being the show to kick off the 4-episode event.

She Will Reign! Featurette: Explores the character of Samantha Arias and her journey towards becoming the Kryptonian Worldkiller known as Reign.

The Gag Reel is a welcome edition to this collection. It’s always fun to see the bloopers, fluffed lines and other mistakes and fun moments. The dance moves of some of the crew are impressive as always. This was my favorite item in the list of bonus material in this collection. Hands down!

A number of episodes also feature Deleted Scenes, which can be accessed via the Main menu. There are no explanations as to why these scenes didn’t make the final cut, but seeing them is interesting nevertheless. It is curious however that some of them were even included. For example, there’s a five second deleted scene in which we see Carl Lumbly (M’yrnn) and David Harewood (J’onn J’onzz) exit an elevator. That’s it. They say nothing, just walk out. Odd…

This collection has been put together with a lot of love and care. Special attention has been put into how the Blu-ray and DVD menus are presented. Little touches like menu selection animations and sounds add to the experience. The layout and presentation is impressive and much appreciated. You know you’re getting value for your money.

The Blu-ray release of “Supergirl: The Complete Third Season” includes 1080p Full HD Video with DTS-HD Master Audio for English 5.1.

No argument from me! And of course the dancing…a signature it seems of Berlanti and company blooper reels.

It’s not only hilarious to see what the actors do when they mess up their lines but also just the stuff they do to while trying to get through their long shooting days and usually on very little sleep. We kind of have this image in our heads of actors being pampered in their trailors in between shooting scenes and that’s not really how it goes.
Sometimes their just blowing off steam by cutting up and being silly like many of us often do when we’re at work with people we know we can joke with.
