Restoring a Vintage “Atom Man vs. Superman” Poster

Fourth Cone Restoration has posted a video outlining the meticulous process of restoring a rare 1950s “Atom Man vs. Superman” six-sheet movie poster.

The restoration began with locating and aligning all four panels, which were acquired separately and in poor condition. The video details the washing of the poster with filtered water and mild detergent to remove impurities, followed by mounting the panels onto a stretched canvas frame lined with acid-free paper. It also explains the challenges of removing old tape that had fused with the poster’s pigmented areas, requiring a last-resort heat gun application. The final stages involved restoration by an artist using water-based paints, colored pencils, and archival markers to replicate the original look, concluding with the poster’s removal from the frame and trimming.
