Rachel Brosnahan Opens Up About Playing Lois Lane in New S Magazine Interview

Rachel Brosnahan

Rachel Brosnahan is trading her vintage Maisel wardrobe for press credentials as she takes on the role of Lois Lane in James Gunn’s highly anticipated “Superman” movie.

The 34-year-old actress, fresh off her Golden Globe and Emmy-winning run as Midge Maisel, is embracing the challenge of stepping into a role that has defined generations of actresses from Margot Kidder to Amy Adams. Speaking with S Magazine, Brosnahan revealed her deep preparation for portraying the fearless Daily Planet reporter.

From Damsel to Detective

“She’s one of the characters that’s evolved the most in the history of the comics,” Brosnahan explained, noting how Lois Lane has transformed from her early “damsel in distress” origins into a modern investigative powerhouse. Her version promises to be “sharp, powerful, and emotionally layered—a modern-day heroine who holds her own in a world of superheroes and villains.”

To authentically capture the character’s journalistic drive, Brosnahan interviewed real-life reporters, discovering a shared DNA with her character. “We’re very similar in a lot of ways. I understand her passion, her determination, and her feeling motivated by the word ‘no,'” she shared.

New Challenges, New Worlds

The DC universe presented entirely new territory for the House of Cards alum, who admitted to feeling intimidated by the “baked-in fan base” while recognizing the massive opportunity. Her biggest challenge? Acting alongside CGI elements that would be added in post-production.

“I’ve never felt like a worse actor in my life!” she laughed, describing scenes with invisible animals and wire work. “If we do another one, I’m going to have to go to mime school.”

Career Momentum Building

The Superman role caps off what Brosnahan calls “one of the biggest years of her career,” following her recent spy thriller “The Amateur” with Rami Malek and ahead of the Shakespeare adaptation “Lear Rex” featuring Al Pacino and Jessica Chastain.

As she prepares for the film’s summer release, Brosnahan reflects on her career trajectory with gratitude: “I feel very grateful to be in the midst of a moment that I’ve been laying the groundwork for. The further I get in my career, the more grateful I am for the opportunity to be surprised.”

“Superman” will be in theaters and IMAX nationwide on July 11, 2025, and internationally beginning 9 July 2025, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
