It’s been a while since I saw BvS. The colors on Superman’s suit didn’t pop as much, did they?

The film somewhat is getting better with age. And I do believe that the ultimate edition is way superior to the theatrical cut.

Mandatory purchase especially if you have a 4K HDR TV and a 4K UltraHD Bluray disc player.

I’ll give it a watch. Even though this film didn’t do it for me, I still try and revisit it with fresh eyes. There are aspects of it that I like a lot and others that I just can’t get passed. I saw Zack spoke about the Martha scene recently and he was cool about the flack it gets. He genuinely seems like a nice and humble guy. I understand what they were going for with that scene and I’ll even go as far to say that it’s a good idea, but the execution was awful, I can never get… Read more »

The third act is a bit of a mess in general. BvS is two thirds a great movie and one third a pretty stupid movie. Honestly, I mainly blame Goyer for this. There’s no way to tell for sure, but the third act seems almost entirely like him.

The Martha scene is like the Pa Kent death scene in MoS; they were going for something interesting, they really blew it in the execution. There’s also the problem of dumbing things down for the audience. Even Joker suffered because of that.

Oh I completely blame Goyer for this and MOS. I agree with you about the Pa Kent stuff too. I think both films are 2/3 good. I really believe that they both were a few rewrites away from being amazing, but alas we got what we got. I think another big issue was the lack of dialogue they gave Superman/Clark. They write him like neo from the matrix and that just isn’t Superman. There’s just a guy monologuing to him and Superman just staring back or if he speaks it’s just very generic. It’s like they’re relying too much on… Read more »

I know we’ve talked about this before, but I personally don’t mind the stoicism and the lack of dialogue, considering the situation. His actions are enough for me here, I can’t imagine any more dialogue in this movie would’ve done him a whole lot of good without breaking the tone. Having said that, you are correct about them relying on our previous relationship with the character and it’s one of the first things I identified the first time I watched the movie. That’s not a problem for me, I find this Superman very much in line with post-Crisis Superman and… Read more »

You are one of my favorite people to debate Superman with lol. I love you neoranger! Here’s what I will say… we love the character already… no matter what movie, show, cartoon or comic comes out… you and I are going to give it the benefit of the doubt. Let’s pretend though that nobody else knows what Superman is or what he’s about… Snyder said this as much going into MOS… he basically made the movie as though a Superman movies hadn’t existed… cool I can get behind that… BUT… if I do that… I have to suspend all previous… Read more »

Christopher Reeve and George reeves made us fall In love with the character with no special effects. That tells me everything I need to know about the character.

And I know A LOT of us don’t need a Superman who speaks… and I know A LOT of us are ok with a stoic Superman… we’re not the majority though… we’re a silent minority… we love him unconditionally . I want him to have mass appeal and I want everyone to love him for the same reasons I do.

I couldn’t help but notice your issue with the “Martha moment” and though it is clearly a point of debate among critics it never struck me as odd. Batman V Superman like Man of Steel is a movie that requires attention to detail, but at the same time pretty much everything is explained at one point or another. There’s really nothing needed to be added. Now it’s been said that Zack Snyder is very interested in the why of it all so let’s take this scene for instance. You ask “WHY” doesn’t Clark just say save my mother? Well this… Read more »

But by saying save Martha, now that’s different. That’s triggering. For a man who clearly suffers from PTSD Bruce NEEDS to know why he said that name. Martha was the last thing his father uttered. Martha was the reason he became the Batman. Now this alien all the sudden knows what keeps him up at night? Clark through his reporting skills uses this to his advantage (only seen in the ultimate edition) finding this info on Bruce. But Batman was still going to kill him. It wasn’t until an innocent human threw her life on the line for this “savage”… Read more »

I’m the kind of viewer that excuses a lot, if I find I connect to themes and character motivations, but that doesn’t always excuse sloppiness. I don’t think it’s debatable that the dialogue is extremely clunky at that part and the “why” is important, but it can’t always undo the “how”. The name “Martha” had to be said, that much is true; but Superman’s first line in that part is “you’re letting them kill Martha”. Not only is it clunky, but it’s also a little too on the nose, effectively undermining the impact of the scene. “Save Martha” should’ve been… Read more »

I wonder why they used the aqua man trailer music for this when they already have good Hans music for it??

Maybe in 20-30 years down the line someone will remake this film with their own suitable dialogue. Then I’d have to digress. The film (ultimate edition) is great as it is in my opinion. I still don’t get the backlash and mockery of the Martha scene. I mean it is a pivotal and powerful moment to make Bruce snap out of it. As jraye90 mentioned he doesn’t only have PTSD. Which he probably does …the guy is also a borderline alcoholic. And alcohol when consumed heavily could play on your mind and ability to control your thoughts and deeds. I… Read more »
