Pre-Order “Superman: The Movie” Extended Cut

The upcoming release of “Superman: The Movie” Extended Cut and Special Edition on Blu-Ray is now available to pre-order.

Decades before blockbuster Extended Cuts were common, Superman proved a true “Man of Tomorrow.” Superman: The Movie received an ahead-of-its-time makeover for its television premiere – nearly 40 more minutes of story, creating a two-night television event. Audiences had already been swept off their feet by Christopher Reeve’s Last Son of Krypton, and now there was more to enjoy. Unseen in decades, this version is paired here with Richard Donner’s definitive vision of his film, the Special Edition Director’s Cut (2000), to create a supersized celebration of Metropolis’ favorite son that preserves the director’s intent while feeding superfan demands.

The slogan for this movie was ” you will believe a man can fly.” And after almost 40 years, this movie still makes viewers believe a man can fly.

This is The Greatest Superman Movie to have ever been made. And I don’t think that there ever will be one to surpass this Beatiful Masterpiece.

Dear Santa,
I’ve taken the liberty of putting the link below. If you could just see past this year, I promise to be good next year…

Not that I need another version of my favourite film in the whole world, are the extra scenes worth the purchase? Any descriptions out there, anyone?

There won’t be another Superman film to top this screen classic. Bit like waiting on the next Beatles!

Well, I’ve never watched it, but from what I’ve heard, there’s a scene where Supes gets back to Lex’s lair to prevent him from killing Miss Tessmacher, and I suppose the scene where de powered Zod and friends are handed out to the police is included too.

OH yeah, my bad!
I usually watch them one after the other, so I usually think of them as one movie.

Yes there is a scene where Superman saves Miss Tessmacher, however the scene with Zod being arrested at the fortress of solitude was in the Richard Donner cut of Superman 2 the deleted scenes. I’m not going to spoil the actual ending of the Donner version. It’s something I believe every fan has to see for themselves.

No the scene with Zod and the rest getting arrested was in the ABC tv cut of the film. In the Donner cut he reverses time again so that they never get out of the Phantom Zone.

One of the reasons you can believe a man can fly in this film is because you get to actually see him do it a lot instead of just a tiny CG figure zipping past the clouds. In some ways it’s like we’re in the 21st century and yet we’ve reverted to just a high tech version of the cartoon technique they used for Kirk Alyn.

You know Matt…your right about that. At least in the the CR era we are actually seeing real people. And that’s during all the scenes with Superman! Yes …not as polished as today’s slick CGI but something about the way they did it back then almost gave it a little more realistic feel.

Well I mean to say is that I can agree about the way they made it seem more real with the special effects that they had back then. Even though I heard how they did it, I still can’t figure it out. The special effects were that good back then. Truly a movie ahead of its time.

Funny thing is a better use of that CGI would be for cleaning up flying effects that used real actors thus giving them the polish the 78 movie didn’t always have. It could even clean up parts where you can see the cape attached to the harness (like when he’s knocked onto the cab in Superman II) or ensure that the lighting on him always matched the background. A gazillion dollar production budget and yet we’ve gone back to swapping the actor out of the cartoon in flying shots (or worse always seeing him flying from far away) after all… Read more »

I couldn’t agree with you more MattComics. In the scene where Superman flys away after he saves Lois for the first time, I can’t tell how they did that. It looks so real. Like he can actually fly. I haven’t seen any other movie or show that can convince me that a man can fly like the way they did for this move.

I mean to act and look the part of Superman is one thing, but to look, act, and convince people that the actor playing Superman is actually flying is something I have only seen in Reeve. This movie will always amaze me.

I hope this sells well enough to convince WB to release more extended cuts of the other Superman movies.

Supes……..they’ve done about all they can with what was left. The only one that had any left over cutting room floor scenes was S4 and I believe that all of that left over stuff had been lost or thrown out.

I have no doubt that this this movie will sell. I’d say most people love the Cristopher Reeve Superman. Whether or not that they release other extended cuts at least this one will be out.

Never seen lots of this footage & some you can u derstand why Donner edited. Some of the flying scenes would be welcome though (after Daily Planet Lois rescue & rockets / Hoover dam). Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for providing the footage of the extra scenes Nate 1986. However I don’t know whether or not I should see this footage yet. Should I see it now or wait till the movie is out? It’s like the question do I want to know what I’m getting for Christmas. Thanks again for the footage though.
