November 3, 2016: “Wonder Woman” Movie Inspired by “Superman: The Movie”

Warner Bros. released a new trailer for the 2017 “Wonder Woman” movie starring Gal Gadot today, and Superman fans would have noticed a small sequence that seemed somewhat familiar.

During one part of the trailer a gunman tries to shoot Steve Trevor, but Diana Prince reaches around a stops the bullet… Something Clark Kent did for Lois Lane when a man fires a gun at her during an attempted robbery in “Superman: The Movie”.

In an interview with Variety from earlier this year “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins admitted that the 1978 film by Richard Donner was her inspiration for filming Wonder Woman.

“‘Superman’ was all about you. It was about you watching and realizing what it would feel like to have great powers and do great things. It was full of love and emotion.”

Wow I must be slipping because I didn’t even make that connection when I first watched the trailer. Also I have to say Gal Gadot is adorable in her Diana Prince glasses.

From the trailer it looks like there’s still a lot of Snyder-filter going but maybe not as severe as usual. I hope Patty Jenkins brings something better to the table.

I’ve heard that she doesn’t fly, but that shot right at the end, before the Etta Candy scene, is the second time(the first being in BvS when she “jumped” at Doomsday) that she sure looks like she’s flying.

I’m in two minds about Diana flying. On the one hand, I don’t think it’s necessary for Wonder Woman to have that ability – and the more superheroes have flight powers, the less special they seem. On the other, I’ve never understood why a woman from a culture rooted in myth, magic and ancient technology would fly around in an “invisible jet” … Pretty much anything – a winged horse, for instance – would be better than that.

I’ve no issue with her flying. In fact, I prefer that to the ridiculous “invisible jet” nonsense I’m just saying that, according to the studio reps, she doesn’t fly, but we get scenes like the ones I mentioned that look an awful lot like flying. Makes me wonder if she flies or not.

IIRC she does have a winged horse in the Smallville Season 11 comic. I don’t think it’s strictly necessary that she be able to fly either. It sort of seems like it’s just something that’s there to make her more of a match for Superman but I don’t think checking off boxes from Superman’s power set is the way you build up Wonder Woman. But if she does fly that’s not something that’s any kind of deal breaker for me. The invisible jet has a certain comicbooky charm that I don’t really mind. The only thing I really dislike is… Read more »

In the old days she used to ride the air currents.

Well it’s not really meant to be a replacement. One is a fun shout-out to the other.

It’s a bit of a wink and a nod to that scene. Of course Supergirl the TV show has done some Donner Easter Eggs as well. And yes, I ALMOST IMMEDIATELY caught the reference.
