Nicolas Cage Interested in Playing Lex Luthor

In an interview with The Guardian, Nicolas Cage has shown interest in playing the role of Lex Luthor.

Once cast to place Superman in the never-made “Superman Lives” movie back in the 1990s, Nicolas Cage is not only a big Superman fan (having named his son Kal-El), but recently voiced the role of the Man of Steel in the animated film “Teen Titans Go! to the Movies”.

With speculation that Henry Cavill may be done playing Superman, it was put to Cage that he could finally wear the blue tights and red cape. “Oh, I think my Superman days are long gone,” he laughs with a little pat of his belly.

When The Guardian reporter suggests he would make an amazing villain his eyes light up. “Oh, that would be GREAT! I’d make a great Lex Luthor!”

While it’s a throw away comment, Cage as Lex Luthor could be an interesting choice… if they ever decide to make another Superman movie with a different cast.

Um…..
Hmmmmm
I really don’t know what to say about Cage playing the role of Luthor.

I’m wondering what others think of the idea. Good? Bad? Not sure?

I can’t really see Cage as Lex but I also have no desire to see Lex on screen again anytime soon. Superman in films MUST get passed Luthor and Zod! I’m not saying they should never be in another film but Superman has other villains that movie going audiences have never seen! Right now, I say Brainiac or bust! I will say though I’d be fine with Lex in a more peripheral role, like if he were mayor of Metropolis or otherwise putting on a legitimate face and then we build to his downfall and rebirth as a super villain… Read more »

Bruno Mannheim or Toyman come to mind. Or John Corben/Metallo. Or Emmet Vale the creator of Metallo.

Kenny Braverman/Conduit would be an interesting villain for a movie.

I would love to see Braverman be brought in as a villain. I think In the right hands, that character can be extremely compelling.

In my opinion Kenny Braverman was already a compelling character. Too bad he didn’t live long for an encore.

But he has to be the same age as Clark. Unless they switch it to Mr. Braverman, the former football coach who was jealous of Clark being…Well…Super fast with those touchdowns of his.

What if instead of growing up in Smallville the same time as Clark, Braverman was an ex employee of the Daily Planet who is jealous of Clark for being a successful writer and is also engaged to Lois? And eventually somehow he becomes the villain Conduit by using Kryptionian tech that was leftover by Zod? Like that armor he used in man of steel.

Or getting radiation from the world engine that almost terraformed the earth and finds the kryptonian tech inside the ship that helps him sustain his condition that includes kryptonite in his veins.

I like that idea Kal-Ed. It would give him a reason to have a grudge against Clark, blaming him for the injuries he received from the other kryptonians. Believeing that all Kryptonians are bad, he’d use his powers to exact his revenge on Superman

He already was in MoS as the bully so I imagine he would be the same age. I pictured him being played by a Bradley cooper type who could come off as kind of a jerk but hit all the emotional notes as well.

….After the battle has ended you hear Lou Reed’s song Coney Island Baby with the lyrics ‘all I wanted to do is play football for the coach!’ which makes for an emotional impact. Hehehehe I can see it already.

Anybody is better than Jesse Eisenberg. Even Nicolas Cage.

Billy Zane, Timothy Olyphant and Cranston we’re picks I could get behind. They could all pull off that mix of sinister and suave pretty well in my opinion, but I’m sure none of them ever got a call though.

Billy Zane I could see pretty easily. He’s actually more suited to Lex now that he’s older. But I tend to think of Lex as being older than Superman because I’m not as invested in the idea of them having known each other as kids or teens.

From what I hear Zane is apparently a cool dude.

I agree about an older Lex. The concept of them knowing each other from childhood or their teenage years always seemed silly and far fetched to me.

Any actor with great caliber and an award winning one for that matter would make a good Luthor.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Nicholas Cage as Lex Luthor. However, in my opinion, (as much as I love Lex Luthor) I think we’ve seen enough of Lex Luthor on the “big screen” for the time being. I think if we can get another big screen Superman film, I think Nicholas Cage would be good as BRAINIAC. Cage is older now, so I think he’d do a good job as Brainiac.

How about Nicolas Cage as the Toyman? It could work.

Lex Luthor as the mastermind behind the threat to Superman could work; John Byrne might be the Devil (I didn’t name him that, I just agree), but his take back in the day of Luthor being responsible for the creation of a Bizarro could prove interesting on screen.

Nic Cage as Bizarro? Lol, just kidding.

I like that idea but it’s still another guy with the same powers as Superman so for the same reasons I don’t want another round with Zod I’d prefer they hold off a bit on Bizzaro.

You have a good point MattComics. And if they ever did bring in Bizarro, which version would it be? The skewed clone of Superman? Or the bizarre version from the alternate square planet, bizarro’s world? They could do the clone story angle, but since they’ve introduced StefenWolf, they could also do the evil being from another world angle as well. I guess it really depends on what the writer of the movie would want to do.

And speaking of skewed lookalikes, that would also open the door to other evil twins of Superman as well.
Ultraman, eradicator, Cyborg Superman to name a few.
