April 17, 2020: DC Announces New Comic Book Distribution Plans

In late March Diamond Comic Distributors announced that they would be closing down their warehouses as a result of COVID-19, which left comic book stores with no new issues of comic books to sell.

DC Comics announced today that new comic books will once again be available in stores from Tuesday, April 28, with the publisher organizing shipping with two new distributors. The deal will see DC use Lunar Distribution and UCS Comic Distributors (who are sister companies of Discount Comic Book Services and Midtown Comics, respectively).

For Superman fans however, no new Superman related books will be available until May, with "Justice Legue #44" and "Lois Lane 10" scheduled to ship on May 12. However, these books should be available digitally from April 29.

DC ANNOUNCES ITS RETURN TO COMIC BOOK STORES ON TUESDAY, APRIL 28

New DC Comic Books to be Available at Open and Operating Comic Book Retailers

DC comic books are returning to comic shops beginning Tuesday, April 28. After a four-week break, fans can celebrate that new superhero stories will be arriving at operating retail stores.

After surveying more than 2,000 stores across the U.S. and Canada, it became clear that many comic book store owners are finding new and creative ways to get books to the fans who want them. To find stores that may have the new titles, visit the comic shop locator webpage:

Check the page often, as it will be updated with new retailers.

Diamond Comic Distributors responded to this announcement with their own statement:

We value our partnership with DC and will continue to support them as a distributor. Our focus is squarely on getting our industries' entertainment products in the hands of fans as quickly and as safely as possible. As we shared this morning with our vendors and retailers, we are currently building our restart plans and targeting mid- to late-May to being shipping new weekly product. If we see signs that it is safe to resume shipping earlier, we certainly will. However, with the limited number of retailers open and most customers on stay-at-home orders, our focus is on supporting our industry and the health and safety of our stakeholders.

It will be interesting to see what the distribution landscape will look like come May when Diamond reopen for business. Either way, I'm sure most comic book readers don't really care who DC uses, as long as new comic books continue to ship on a weekly basis.
